Another win for league, but for christsakes Collingwood V Essendon was over at 1/4 time, and quite frankly of little interest outside of Collingwood fans, or football sadists.

I hope Essendon are not on again on friday night.

heh yeah, if you consider adding the two hour averages of two different games shown live in different markets, to a 3 hour average of a single game shown on delay, as a "win", then yeah, the NRL "won" the night.

surely this means that they should get more than us in the broadcast agreement

hehehe

A huge win for the NRL.

Be interesting to see what the Swans v Freo game rates. Was one of the best games of the year IMO.

Isn't that strange, because i thought it was a very, very, ugly game, typical of Sydney, it looked like a rolling rugby maul to me a lot of the time.

St Kilda and the Swans play the ugliest football i have ever seen, i can sort of understand the Swans game as the SCG is small and the game they play has been designed for it.

Sy kilda though will not win a flag with their ugly defence orientated game.

I dont like rule changes but something must be done to stop 36 players around the ball, IMO zones will probably be bought in.

A:M, its possible your rugby ( L and U ) influences may cloud your judgement on what are good games and what are not :), the only reason IMO the Swans/Freo game was good was because of its closeness.

Broncos vs Eels was live into both states.

Well, put it this way. Put it up against Geelong's 101 point win, or the thrashing of the Bombers, or Carlton's thrashing of the Tigers and it was an awesome game.

It had intensity, big hits, players showing how far they're prepared to go for thier team mates and for me that just added up to a very entertaining game.

On top of that I thought your team copped the worst of the umpiring decisions and were very unlucky to lose.

Thats the advantage they have ATM, Freo were on friday night at subi against Collingwood earlier this year and drew 315k in Perth , not to mention 40k plus at the ground.

Here is a thought for friday night games ........... one every week in Melbourne but one in Perth and Adelaide alternating, so you would have 2 friday games like the NRL.

For EX.... week one....... Collingwood V Richmond from the MCG.
Freo V Brisbane from Subi
Adelaide would get the Melbourne game, Perth and Brisbane would get the Perth game.

Week 2 Bulldogs V Carlton from Etihad.
Adelaide V Nth Melbourne

Melbourne and Perth would get the Etihad game and obviously the other game would be for Adelaide.

The next week you could revert back to the west again with a WC v someone, you could even throw GC on a friday night somewhere.

yep, the friday night double header has and is being considered for the 9th game, because of how successful its been in the NRL.

its different for us because we have 3 core markets to their 2, but it would be interesting....it would mean the eagles, dockers, crows and power would go from friday night rarities to having half their games on fridays, especially the eagles and crows.

you would find one adelaide vs one perth game, and a vic v vic game, would be the most common.

i would much rather the new extra game go to a blockbustery monday night game shown live around the country on FTA (on the HD variant in places where its not going to rate)

it would be a great promotion for the game to be available to people all over the country who dont want to watch bullshit like packed to the rafters.

Not quite,

Week 1..... Eagles V ? into Perth, whilst Adelaide and Melbourne would get the Melbourne friday game.

week 2..... Crows V ? into Adelaide, whilst Perth and Melbourne would get the Melbourne friday night game.

week 3 .....Dockers V ? into Perth, whilst Adelaide would get The Melbourne fri night game.

Week 4 .... Port V ? into Adelaide, whilst Perth gets the Melbourne friday night game.

Each of the 4 SA/WA teams would get around 4 friday night games, the big friday night games from Melbourne still would get good viewing across 2 big markets but the local games in their market would seriously increase the total viewing as the NRL are able to do.

It makes sense to me, and of course with friday night games clubs can increase their profile and sponsorship ?.

Makes sense if Adelaide Oval gets up and running and if those dick heads in the WA government come to their senses and build the new stadium in the city. Or at least in East Perth.

Oh yeah, and no ****ing 6:30 starts in Perth. 7:30 and live thanks.

Still not comparing apples with apples. The CH 9 Friday night football is for TWO NRL games shown concurrently live into Sydney and Brisbane. That's why it says Friday Night Football and not the actual match up.

does anyone seriously think Australian tv has 2 billion floating around to pay for tv rights for both the NRL and AFL? I think they may both be in for a shock this time around.

100% Correct:thumbsu:

Ultimately it will be up to the 3 FTA networks and FOX what they get for each.

I think the AFL needs to strongly consider the fact that NRL does rate very strongly in NSW & QLD and it si the preferred sport of the masses up there. This will also be the first time that the bidding will open and transparent.

It's going to be interesting!

Just for my own personal education - how does the package of the two games help the NRL get the higher ratings than the AFL on the same night?

doesn't it measure a peak audience rather than the volume?

Do they get an advantage by upping the peak towards the end of game 1 because those interested in game 2 are settling in?

it's a genuine question on my part, I don't really know how it works

The concept is that if you don't like the AFL game you might not switch it on whereas because there is 2 NRL games to watch punters are more likely to switch on because every Friday night in Queensland one of their three teams is on and the same in Sydney. Thus it's not apples and apples.

You are right though, it does measure the peak.

ok, thanks.

I guess the NRL are using couple of factors in their favour to get a natural advantage:

1. popularity in two highly populated states in same time zone
2. shorter games allows for the two broadcasts.

It's actually possible for the AFL to replicate the success of that, although the length of the game makes it a bit more difficult.

Is a 7:10pm to 10pm time slot feasible on a Friday night?

And how do Perth crowds like an 8pm kick off for their matches? (allowing for a 10pm to 1am live time slot into Melbourne).

You can see why the AFL is thinking seriously about reducing the length of the game and the breaks - if they could squash it into 2.5 hours rather than 3, they'd be able to do it a bit more conveniently (for them and the stations).

When you break it down like this, you can see why Nine would love to have the rights to Friday night, utilising the various markets and their digital station to maximise ratings for both NRL/AFL.

They would kill the ratings Friday night.

R22 NRL Friday Night football

GC v Parramatta- shown live in Sydney - 430K - on delay in Bris 175K
Bris v NQLD - on delay in Sydney 244K - live in Brisbane 313K.

The 7:30pm Live Ch 9 Friday Night Football timeslot ratings combine the live Sydney audience for the GC v Parra game and the Brisbane live audience for the Bris v NQLD game.

It's actually two games shown live in different TV markets but the same timeslot and heading 'Friday Night Football'.

The AFL by contrast has one game in 3 markets but on one hour delay in Melbourne and up to 3 hours delay in Perth.

This is the average audience, not the peak. 2hrs v 3 hrs with a heap more advert potential for AFL.

The NRL are throwing everything at getting those ratings, two live games showing the hometown teams in their prime market. They also pick the games only 6 weeks in advance, in other words they lvie up the marquee games for FNF.

The AFL by contrast pick the fixture in October the previous year and this year in particular have spread FNF around the clubs to help with sponsors, etc.

The AFL has wriggle room to improve ie: live games, go back to big drawing/competitive clubs.

NB: R23 in the NRL was the exception to the rule (same game in two markets) and won Friday night easily against the Coll v Ess thrashing. A good comparsion would be the Collingwood v Freo game which went live into both markets (Melb , Perth) earlier in the season and rated 1 million.

QUOTE=fabulousphil;18463798]Interesting TV ratings again this week (fri Night).
http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2010/07/week-30-3.html

The AFL game wins, but maybe with the non RL capitals yet to be included for the RL, they may win it.

I wonder if next TV deal we will see something similar to what RL does now with a QLD game and a NSW game on friday night.

If a St Kilda/Hawthorn game was shown in Melbourne and a team featuring either a SA team or WA team was shown in either of there markets at a decent time on fri night the ratings would be huge.

Fremantle have played once on fri night this year and drew 315,000 people in Perth not withstanding the 40,000 at the ground.

Plenty of upside for fri footy in both SA and WA, and possibly QLD next year.[/QUOTE]

The AFL wins friday night this week, but very low ratings as usual in Perth, a decent time slot would IMO see it around 200k

http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2010/08/week-34-3.html

BYW i have no idea why i am quoting myself

Probably wouldn't get to 200k unless it involved a local team, but on previous rare occasions where 7 have showed FNF at 7:30 it had rated over 150k in Perth.

Interesting to note that again the NRL, with 2 different games live in both it's markets, still couldn't attract a bigger average audience from 7:30 to 9:30 than 1 delayed AFL match between 8:30 and 11:30. Anyone got the NRL's average between 9:30 and 11:30 for a real laugh?

Edit: Not even half the AFL's audience. Give them a billion dollars!

What does the show before the footy (7:30-8:30)on friday roughly rate.
