Playing online and the best way to mark is to instantly hold the mark button after you kick and then straight away realease it, like maybe hold it for half a second at most and basically ignore the white marking circles. Also, dont let go of the left stick while marking, try to get your player in a good position. Works at least 50% of the time anyway...

When your opponent kicks, do the exact same but use the spoil modifier instead.

It's seriously flawed. Sometimes when using the right stick before a marking contest it can help but other times I give away an illegal shepherd free kick even though the ball is literally 2 meters away from me.

The more I play, the more I'm realising it's basically a crap shoot.

So is it worth getting?
Just buy the game at EB and try for yourself. If you don't like it then you can always return it for a full refund within 7 days

I think it's a bit of a hit and miss across the board. There are some things that are good or at least workable, then there are shocking aspects. Personally, I think it lacks the playability that games like FIFA has, but that's understandable. I've been spoilt with a franchise that's been able to develop its game engine and features over a decade or more, not to mention much much more resources.

I'm not a huge gamer these days so I only have time for an hour or so every few days to play. I don't think AFL Evolution is going to take up much of that time if any in the near future so I'm most likely going to return it.

This game has so many flaws but its a great laugh and good time. How the players run and mark are pretty close to some players are like in real life. Graphics are meh but we all knew it was going to be . At least we get patches which can keep improving areas. Happy just to be able to play an afl game again :)

I'm really glad people are able to find some fun in this game.

I see moments of greatness but they are so few and far between. I played a crap load of online multiplayer tonight and it's shocking (and I won just about every game). Seems like this is probably a richer single player experience than AFL Live 1, but a much worse online experience. Which probably boils down to having way more content than AFL Live 1, but much worse core gameplay.

Think I'll be returning this one, doesn't quite suit me as well as Live 1 did. I will admit though, the AI is much improved over Live 1 which was surprising.
Pretty much this. Nailed it.

This is the best advice I think.

I don't agree though that we should be giving Wicked Witch an easy out by saying 'low budget' and bad gameplay is 'to be expected'. They made a conscious choice to focus their development time on adding more and more features and stadiums and leagues and modes and camera views etc etc etc, rather than focus a big portion on polishing the gameplay mechanics.

AFL Live 1 wasn't perfect, but to their credit they prioritised the gameplay experience over everything else and that's what made it so successful in many peoples eyes.

Im not starting a career until they patch the goal kicking, its bloody woeful and a game breaker for me, takes the fun out of it. Also the free kicks are screwed, we get pinged for everything and its almost impossible to get a free against the AI

Just had the best game yet. 10min, hard, I just figured out marking and it's opened the whole thing up. Completely clicked for me. Able to kick out of defence (I go to the back pocket first now, wait for the BP to run out then start your kick softly as they begin to double back towards you) and go from there.

Massively different game experience since the marking clicked. Was a 1 point game late in the fourth and actually felt in control of the result. Still clunky but fun factor increased massively.

I think they just lacked the technical ability and capacity to produce a game with good mechanics so they just prioritised the graphics, stadiums and all that stuff over the gameplay itself. It's why we were given face scans and pictures of the stadiums rather than gameplay footage.

Perhaps you're right. I can't think of a game they've produced which has been praised for good gameplay.

Does anyone know how to look sideways or just look around when you mark the ball? All I can see is straight ahead on be a pro.
