This is great news, I suspected liveris was a footy fan from his previous comments and where he comes from, he is completely at odds with the anti AFL Sydneysider in John Coates.

I'm unsure what the blues financial report has to do with footy in QLD, is that for a comparison to the lions? A $3 mill profit is pretty good for them I think, although they had pretty much the perfect year to make some good money. Hopefully they get to a point where their afl disruption doesn't need to be as high. They make some good money off their social club which all the northern states clubs should have imo.

wasnt paying attention to my threads. and not sure why they are getting mentioned given i deleted them 13 minutes before you posted

I can almost certainly guarantee it will be the Gabba. The Premier has categorically said no new stadium. He doesn’t want QSAC. That leaves……… The Gabba.

Aren't there huge logistical issues with the Gabba's location that makes a rebuild/new stadium a nightmare? Don't know specifics but remember reading about a school across the road that is going to cause a headache and the general location of the stadium itself

Go back and watch 9 news QLD, aired at 6pm last night… It was breaking news at the top of their bulletin.

Edit: For your information.

As good as it would be for the AFL to have a brand new oval stadium built in Brisbane, the Gabba redevelopment seems like the most logical option given the circumstances and I've been anticipating the LNP selecting that route for a while now. This means it's very likely the Lions will be playing most of their home games on the Gold Coast for several years in the lead up to the 2032 Olympcs.

Yes there are.. That’s why a new stadium makes the most sense. Issue is the cost and the politics. I listened to a good interview on ABC Brisbane a few months ago about the builder of the Perth Stadium. It was privately owned and had some private equity I believe. Can’t remember exact details but the gent said the Brisbane new stadium could easily be modelled successfully and brought to market effectively without the cost to taxpayer give fears.

Fingers crossed the govt finds a way to change its mind, using legacy as its reason which I think it should.

Government 60 percent, private 40 percent, then the government pays the private investors annually for 25 years is what I read. So yes that seems like a good arrangement as the public wouldn't even remember that payment is occurring after a year or two.

Vic park appears to be getting more widespread appeal from the public, media and some big names, the only issue is christafulli being so stupid in making such categoric statements multiple times, when he didn't need to.

Well the opposition to the Vic Park proposal is the cost, but does that cost include all the other stadiums ?
The cost of the stadium should be independent of location except for the land purchase.
The Northern stadium is cheap because the government owns the land there is room to build accommodation
but it has a really out-of-this-world stadium design which would certainly draw attention of they could simply tone it done.

No, this is not true, construction can be made more expensive because of the difficulty in actually physically doing the construction because of factors such as the ability to move around the stadium, truck in materials.

Which is why the Gabba rebuilt appeared worse and worse as time on, they realise the construction is difficult because of how it's hemmed in by the roads around it.

You could build an identical stadium in a different location and the costs could be different because of the geographic logistics of the stadium.

Yes, I should have said "The cost of the stadium should be independent of location all things being equal"

The Perth Stadium was expensive because it was built on a reclaimed muddy rubbish tip
and necessitated an expensive concrete "bowl" construction.
The foundations can demand different approaches.
Traffic congestion and access could affect time which would affect cost.

I live in Queensland and rugby league is still easily the most popular football code in the state. News Corp are the NRL's biggest stakeholder, so they put out propaganda in The Courier Mail about AFL taking over in order to persuade V'Landys into giving assistance to rugby league in Queensland. We've seen it work with the Dolphins being rushed in and Magic Round being introduced in Brisbane.

Hardly anyone would recognise Lachie Neale walking through Wynnum Plaza despite him being the Lions best player and captain. If someone like Adam Reynolds or Reece Walsh walked through there they'd be mobbed by the crowd like a celebrity.

Anecdotal evidence means little.
Give statistics and detail if you want to argue this debate.

Actually they fail to give AFL the coverage that it deserves.

I'm sure that Lions supporters and many others would notice Lachie Neale as he has quite a character face.

I'm speaking from real life experiences not the world of social media. The majority of people who live here and support AFL tend to be expats from interstate. Since the Lions won the premiership, News Corp have been pushing the agenda for another NRL team in Queensland using scare mongering of AFL taking over. I'm not sure about NSW since I haven't lived there but I assume NRL is still the number one football code there as well? AFL being number two.

That is ancedotal evidence which is no evidence at all.
fans of one sport do not see the strengths of other sport because they are too involved in their own sport.
I do not speak of my friends in Queensland that could identify Lachie Neale because in all probability they are in the minority.

I've also got real life experiences in Queensland that suggest the opposite. Born and bred in Queensland and I've followed Aussie rules since I was a kid when I first got introduced to the game through a school AusKick program. So there goes that theory about expats. Before you ask, my parents aren't expats either.

In terms of sports people being recognised in Queensland, I think it mostly depends on where you are. For example, I've seen Xavier Coates walk around in public on the GC and not a single person recognises him and I've also seen Reece Walsh get recognised when walking around in public on the GC. Scotty Prince, Mat Rogers, Ben Hannant etc - I've seen them all walk around in public on the Gold Coast and no one recognises them. I just think Gold Coasters in general aren't that fanatical about seeing sports stars in public and it might be a different story in Brisbane because people up there are generally more into league than your average Gold Coaster.

Do AFL players get recognised in public in Queensland? The short answer is yes. Nothing like it would be in Victoria, but it does happen and I've witnessed it with my own eyes.

I follow both sports so I don't have any reason to be bias.
