Collingwood and West Coast will meet at the MCG for a huge top four clash. The result of this game could have huge ramifications for where these sides finish by season’s end. Both sides are coming off testing wins, in which each side had to dig deep in order to get the four points. The two teams will also be bolstered with some huge inclusions. For the Eagles, their three best forwards return, and for the Magpies, Darcy Moore and Varcoe both return.
Collingwood
Collingwood improved its finals prospects last week, managed to fend off a plucky Bombers outfit. The second quarter was perhaps the worst quarter played by the Magpies all season, but they managed to dig deep in the other quarters to pull off a remarkable win. Scott Pendlebury put in superb performance, winning crucial clearances as well as steadying the ship when the team appeared to buckle. De Goey and Grundy were also outstanding. A win for Collingwood is not only important for their finals chances, but it is also needed to improve their credentials. In recent weeks, critics have cited that Collingwood has only defeated one top eight team. The Magpies will be keen to grab this week and silence the critics. Collingwood’s backline will have its work cut out for them with the Eagles bringing back Jack Darling, Josh Kennedy, and Mark LeCras. This is incredibly difficult for Collingwood as they will be without key backman Lynden Dunn. Collingwood will be relying on Jeremy Howe, Matthew Scharenberg, and Darcy Moore to cover these players.
The man to watch for Collingwood is Darcy Moore. Moore has had an injury interrupted season, and his expiring contract has caused some nervousness around the club. However, regardless of his contract, he is still an important asset to this Collingwood team. Many assume that Moore will be playing down back, and will be faced with the daunting task on either Kennedy or Darling. Moore will at least need to restrict their impact on the game.
West Coast
After a mid-season lull, West Coast seem to be clicking back into gear, showing some good form against the Giants last week. Like Collingwood, the Eagles were tested, but like all good side should, they managed to put GWS away in the end. Jack Redden and Andrew Gaff were both excellent for the Eagles. Shannon Hurn also played well, establishing himself as one of the premier captains in the competition. The West Coast will be bolstered with the inclusion of half their forward line, which has convinced many that the West Coast should come away with the four points on Sunday. However, their record at the MCG causes much doubt to be cast over the side. The Eagles have not beaten Collingwood at the MCG since round two, 1995. Since 2015, the Eagles have only beaten one side at the MCG, Carlton. These statistics are damning, and are going to sit in the players minds during the game.
The man to watch is Jack Darling. Midway through the season, Darling put forth his credentials as one of the best key forwards in the competition. However, he has been out since mid-season, and in his first game back he will be looking to make an impact, with many also wondering if he can recapture that form he had earlier in the season.

Congratulations Jack Crisp
The ever consistent Crisp chalks up his 100th game this week. The man who was classed as “steak knives” in the Dayne Beams trade has well and truly cemented his spot in the best 22 with his hard running and long booming kicks.
Tip
While Collingwood do have a major advantage playing at the MCG, the inclusions for the Eagles will be too much to handle for an undermanned Collingwood backline.
