Preview AFL Round 9 Adelaide V Brisbane Lions

I like this post. He questioned Axel's knowledge of the reserves, and then suggests we bring in Sheldon (who has been pretty average in the reserves) and Harwood (who didn't even play last week).

;)
I know he didn't play very well but I really like this kid and thinki he can do more than Austin, showed it last year and I could have sworn Harwood was playing in the Curtain Raiser last week? No?

Anyway TBD what are you thoughts on dropping Staker and bringing in Collier?

Disapprove.

They are both compusively prone to serious acts of bafflingly bad mistakes, but Staker provides more value otherwise. Especially if we need him to play as a tall defender. Collier may be tall but he doesn't play tall.

First of all, wow at the effort in the preview :thumbsu:, and second of all, Adelaide by 10 goals.
Did you see us last week l_d? That is a very flattering prediction for us. I wouldn't be suprised if we lost or won, but it'd be nice to get a win against a side not in the bottom 4.:thumbsu:

Staker is a last resort in defense because there is no one else to play. You can't drop a guy for playing bad in a position he shouldn't be playing. Staker isn't great, but is giving more than a Collier would ATM.

I agree mate, which is why I won't reply to the post (and I avoid Port-Crows shitfights at all costs anyway). I am sure other's knew what I meant.

Yep, I for one did anyway.

Back OT -

Who comes in if Fev and/or Brown is missing? Clark and A-corn might be serviceable replacements, but will Mitch even play? There is a very real possibility our backline AND forward line could be drastically affected by injury this week, especially if Merret doesn't come up.

Merrett gone for another 2-3 weeks according to the injury list :(

There comes a time where you have to roll the dice with a player- sink or swim and I think that is the time with Collier. We know he has the size and shape to play league footy, we know he has the pace and dash. We need all these attributes in our team.

We also know he suffers from a lack of confidence with his decision making at AFL level. We also know he plays small for a big man.

The time has come to see if he can step up.

ACORN is definite in for me because he need another goal kicker. From the limited amount i have seen of him he looks likes a natural forward. He also gives us that swingman option.

This is a game we have to steal. Even Brown and Fev are in adelaide i don't think that means they will both play. I am all for leaving both players out for this game if it means they are close to 100 percent for the following game.

We could use Polkinghorne and Adcock leading out of the square and ACORN at Centre half forward.

If young Tom gets a gig on the weekend it will be by default alone. He was very very poor at times in the ressies on the weekend and on my limited viewing over the last 2 season he will be lucky to be a long term AFL player at his rate progress.

Acorn is also very hit and miss in target selection and has a long way to go with his development.

I think a few of you had better get your blinkers off on Staker as it shows phenomenal bias against the player just because he did not come through the Lions system as a young player. He is easily, I repeat, easily one of our better players week in week out. He makes the odd mistake but then so do 95 % of all players.
He is one of our few talls of any quality standing, he can play both forward and back, he does read the play well compared to some others we have, he holds his position and he competes against his opponent no matter what. He also has a better conversation rate than a few around here are giving him credit for.

Yes and they are exactly my thoughts and that's why I replied to Axel saying that I don't agree with that and than you question my knowledge of the reseves even though you agree with me?

However I agree with you on the fact that Sheldon hasn't been playing very well but I think he has played well enough to get a spot over Austin. Also can you tell me if Harwood played last week becauseI thought that he did!

100% agree with this post!

Agree with Albie's inclusion. I thought he showed some really good signs in his games prior to being demoted.

Is it just me our have our skills looked terrible the last month? we haven't had great execution for many years, but the last 4 games it seems like we haven't been able to hit a target.

Agree. The last game in particular had all of the hallmarks of that horror mid-season stretch in 2007. Hopefully this year we can recover from the form trough in time to again whup Collingwood by 16 goals. ;)

He agrees that staker shouldn't be dropped for collier. But questions your knowledge of the reserves because you suggested we bring in someone who has been playing poorly all year, and someone who didn't even play last week. What could you possibly find confusing about that.

What to say about the game this week.. if we lose, with collingwood coming up our season will be hanging on by a very thin thread. Must win.

Lions by 8.

I am just really pleased we have had Staker. Without his contribution this year, with all our recent injuries, we would have been in bigger trouble. He has filled a lot of roles for us and has done them quite well. Don't get the bagging of him, he deserves a bit of credit in my opinion.so I am giving him some. Welcome to the Lions, Brent, am happy to have you:)

If we lose this we could easily be 4-6 after next week and close to our season being over. Adelaide are in slightly worse form than us so I'm glad I can finally tip the Lions again.

Out: Austin
In: Proud

As a midfielder Proud in form offers a lot more than Austin does. Proud has almost the same disposals and tackles as Austin does and he has played one less game.

Yes I know that but I was just stating my opinion

Don't agree with this at all John infact his whole career he has been known as a dumb footballer, once again Staker butchers the footy and has limited football smarts. What he has over a Collier or Cornelius is 6 more pre-seasons. If Collier and Acorn are afforded that luxury, i think you would find they will be better players.

I am not saying we should drop him but we need to give these other blokes a chance.

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that throughout the year our whole team has been trying to spear passes to other players rather than popping it out in front and letting the receiver run onto it? it seems to happen all over the ground and far too often and it usually results in:
a) a shank (and subsequent turnover) cos theyve tried to kick the ball too hard
b) an opponent dropping infront of our player and taking an easy mark at chest height
c) over kicking the ball so that our player is camped under it and the defender gets an easy spoil (especially with kicks into browny and fev)

IMO we need to stop being cute and get back to simple footy, kicking the ball out infront and letting forwards/mids run onto the ball.

Has anyone else noticed this?
