AFL the "national sport" of Australia

Apologies if it has already been said (this thread is a little long and boring to read every page !), but ....

Russell Crow is a Kiwi and as such doesn't really belong in the NRL at all.

If he is so passionate about Rugby League why doesn't he try to convince his countrymen in New Zealand to take Rugby League more seriously?

and when discussing Rugby, most non-QLD or NSWers group the two codes together - remembe they are two different codes who seem to despise each other as much as the AFL-NRL people do.

Fact is, Rugby League and Union are only "big" sports in NSW and QLD, however neither of them dominate either market, League is probably bigger than union in QLD, and probably vice-versa in NSW (Im told).

For AFL to gain its market share in say Brisbane, it needs 33% of the market, not necessarily to become to the number 1 sport in the city. The crowds and popularity of the Lions is easily greater than the Reds, and probably a little behind the Broncos.

Neither League or Union dominate NSW 100%, unlike AFL which has total undeniable dominance in all other states, and more than just a small presense in the QLD/NSW markets.

Remember that.

Union in NSW is quite small. Soccer would be in front at the moment. Simply go to most Sydney pubs and yopu'll find the League on the TV's, the crowds bigger at League games and the paper has more League in it then Union. League is the big sport in NSW and QLD. Soccer, Union and Rules come second and probabely always will. But they are all accepted by the public and do rate quite well.

You go do a survey of all the gold coast residents living there and 95% will tell you they want a rugby league team (hence the titans)

Survey all the gold coast people and 10% would say they would want an AFL team (no interest!)

It's very clear the gold coast wants a rugby league team, not a artifical melbourne team playing three games up there a year and none of their players can kick the ball more than 15 metres

He grew up in the South Sydney area, and thus loves the Rabbitohs. Nationality has nothing to do with it.

Union still gets ok crowds, but outside of internationals and super 14 it is mainly a club game.

I find it interesting that NRL is becoming very NFL like- Monday Night Football (which is a great invention), Extra Time, Fox's graphics etc

I wouldn't agree 100%. The Gold Coast is mixed up of a lot of ex Vics, SA's and WA's. There should be enough interrest for a team to play there. The NRL however were smart putting in the Titans to ensure a large part of the the Gold Coast stays true to Rugby League. An AFL team would be successful there if they could win a lot of games.
