Unless someone unexpected becomes available, I hope we just hit the draft.

Not keen on Dow, Stocker, Phillips etc

Maybe Setterfield or Kemp become avaliable to us.

But yeah, hit te draft and see if we luck out for Cadman.

Yeh if nobody in their free mind would come to is, let's hit the draft, where they have no choice

It is somewhat annoying that the AFL gave the green light for salary dump deals to benefit lesser teams like Us, North, Hawks currently and of course the reigning premier is the first team to benefit. But then again Free Agency has worked the same way so its no surprise.

Now we turn our attention to the draft. I'd love to trade up to get Cadman but not sure if any other team would be open to that :(

At risk of coming across as a need, missing on Bowes has another effect for our cap situation next year.

All numbers based off 2022 salary cap.

Total Cap: 13,165,950.00
Cap Floor: 12,507,652.50
Difference: 658,297.50

Our Cap for 2023: 13,824,247.50
(assuming we paid 95% this year after losing a lot of salary in 2020 and 2021 and have carry over to next year)

So apparently we have Cap $3m Cap space, which I presume to be the top of our Cap, not the Floor, so:

Current Salary commitment 10,824,247.50
(3m less than 2023 limit, not including draftees)
Space to Cap Floor 1,683,405.50
(95% of AFL salary cap)

Bowes would have got us halfway to the floor, let alone the cap.
How we are going to find 1.6m just to get the floor is beyond me.
We are going to have to restructure a few deals to be front ended, because we arent bringing in that level of salary from other clubs.

We can move cash forward. Pay Zach merrett 1.6 next year, create space on the back end.
I daresay we'd have done that already with him, Langford (expecting 65% of his salary over the next 2 years), Ridley and Laverde to be getting a lot of money next year.

I was assuming it to be to the 100% margin rather than the 105%

Isn't Draper is out of contract next year? - could we use some of that money to lock him in for 5 years? (front end his contract)

If we front-end all our contracts, don't be surprised when a few players try to do a Rory Lobb or Brad Hill and bail with a couple of years remaining to go hunting for more cash elsewhere.

So how we doing so far over the last few weeks....

  • Last minute offer to Clarko while Rutten still employed: -1
  • Sheedy opening his mouth: -1
  • Messy sacking of Rutten: -1
  • Commissioning full external report: 1
  • Appointment of coach: 1
  • Sheedy opening his mouth again: -1
  • Appointing a CEO: 1
  • Losing a CEO: -1
  • Using "war chest" to bring in Bowes & #7 (or any other players): -1

Thing can only get better from here, right? Right?

That was clever by Brisbane. The asking price for Dunkley is probablytheir F1, GWS's F2 and 21 for Dunkley, 30 and 39. They can then use 39 to turn into Gunston, 52 and 65.

The only thing I hate about front ending the contracts is that when they get through the early years, and they start getting peanuts, they can ask for a trade. Fantasia and Ryder still burn.

Jack graham - offer pick 22, extend his contract
Would happily pay him 650-700k a year
Front end it. It’s a start!

Good point - I remember this also happening with Bryce Gibbs

We do have to be somewhat creative to get a pick before 22 - zero doubt Davey gets bid on. I did think that the turmoil recently would've led to someone sticking their hand up wanting out but to no avail

I hope we are renewing our interest in Jack Bytel again. Young enough to meet Scott's mandate and a clear position of need.

Paddy Dow would also be on decent coin and I can see hin adding depth and helping us meet the salary floor.

There’s a couple of players GWS may look to salary dump before the end of trade week (Whitfield, Hayne). Might be able to get a Bowes style deal from GWS?

I hope we can somehow get Sydney's 14 or 17.

I read this one before. Not sure Whitfield helps us too much but Haynes is solid down back. 180 odd game's but already 30.

If we were choosing players for our critical needs, neither fit the bill. But why not take their salary on, a pick upgrade and a good player to boot.
