If we walk away with 3 first rounders + our NGA small forward this year its a really good thing and will raise our floor quite well mind you they are rookies and it may take some time

I am sorry but id take that any day over Reid even if we do make a trade we want to be at least adding one first rounder and a second rounder to our squad this year going for Reid wont make that possible

I would counter I don't think Essendon can develop and retain 3 x 1st rounders + NGA as well as the rest of our young list.

We rolled out one of the youngest lists last week, played alright. And our club has been mediocre in dev young players.
Our list is going through a mini rebuild, on top of a rebuild.

Getting opportunities to get talent like Harley is rare. We almost got there with Dunkley.

I’m thinking aloud here, because I’ve been back and forth a few times.

I’m not in the boat of trading 2-3x 1st round picks for Reid, because I am firmly in the camp of we have so many holes that need filling, and that will nearly empty us out of the top of the draft for a good few years.

My counter that I’m currently thinking over in my head is…if you look at our best players - Merrett, Caldwell, Martin, Durham. Maybe Ridley, although I’m starting to have ?’s
Only one of those was picked in the 1st round. We tend to be a strange one in that we seemingly find very good pickups at different points in recruitment - and are deadset awful on converting our high picks.

Now, does this mean we should feel more comfortable exiling a few of those picks because of our ability later in drafts/off-season? Or is that just a foolish mentality, with the best crop still always available and us just needing to drastically improve our strike rate.

Yes it has been mediocre with development but our club has improved and we have seen young players step up since brad was here

Going all in for Reid will backfire massively yes his exciting and a generational talent but one player isnt going to rocket this list forward we need to draft and start pushing our C grade players down the best 22 order

We have said we need more A grade talent lets stick it out this time and not go for sugar hits

Yes you are correct on the strike rate but we have a brand new recruitment team so we should be looking at it in an new light rather then continuing to look at it as if Dodoro is still there recruiting

I don't think our deficiencies are as large as many of you think. We're strong inside, our wingers are pretty strong too. Need another key forward and some medium defensive depth but overall our build is pretty good. Not sure we're a Reid away but he brings us much closer
I think we need to look at trading some of our midfielders for midfielders who can kick

using average outcomes for picks and the level of certainty that Reid will be good.

He’s worth 2-3 top 5 picks. If he’s traded it will be for less than that and the team would be getting above average value.

At some point you do need stars and can back in your systems to develop later picks into adaquate depth.

We’d need 3 high picks in a non compromised draft to find equivalent value. He’s more Jake Stringer than Dylan Sheil and bringing him in is quite risk averse in some ways even if there is huge sticker shock

All the Reids!!!

Draper gone as FA (Band 1) 🙏
Parish for a 2nd rounder (Pay some salary)

Assume we finish 15th, Dees finish 9th, Saints 14th
Assume Reid wants out and has 2nd year blues.

Draft hand 4, 5 (Draper), 10, 22, 23, 30 (Parish)

Trade 4, 5 for Reid and Archer Reid
Trade 10+30 for Jamarra
Trade F3rd for Liam Reidy

Draft 22, 23

McGrath McKay Ridley
Redman Reid Merrett
Duursma Durham Martin
Perkins Caddy Reid
Kako Jamarra Langford
Reidy Reid Caldwell
Tsatas Roberts Jones Davey
That's very ambitious but we're not getting band 1 for Draper with the way he is going. If Jamarra doesn't play this season, then I wouldn't be giving 10 for him.

Understand what you're saying, but I don't think you can class Harley Reid as a 'sugar hit'. Trading our picks last year for a Dan Houston - to me, that would have been a sugar hit.

Reid's younger than Tsatas. He has 10+ years ahead of him of elite level footy, if things pan out how they look like they will.

I don't think we'll be able to get him (why would he choose Essendon over Hawthorn, especially coming from West Coast?) - but we should do everything we can to try imo.

And he can kick and play multiple positions.

If we’re getting Reid, we should trade Tsatas because there won’t be opportunity for him at Essendon

I see your point and its a fair one

But i would rather us stick to the process and draft 3 first rounders to really get more talent into our club

If the Jamarra wanted to come to us and the dogs asked for Langford in a straight swap, would you do it?
No.
We are not ready to be bringing in someone who has gone off the rails off field.

We have actually got some development staff and are spending over the soft cap now so what has happened development wise previously in not totally relevant to now. Not that I am against having a decent crack at Reid.

With Reid assuming he likes playing AFL you’re likely to get about 200-250 games from him at a really high level.

To get that from a draft you likely need 3 top 3 picks and you get that outcome once.

It’s obviously possible to find a player that talented later. It’s also possible that with 3 FRP you may find multiple people with that outcome:

However with academies and other institutions keeping talented players out of the open draft pool it gets even harder.

So to have a sure thing goal scoring mid for a decade and have it essentially only cost you 1 years worth of drafting. That’s a very good value proposition

It's something our previous list manager would do. I trust Rosa to see the big picture

Luckily for Essendon the dogs biggest need is probably a Libba replacement.

they’d probably ask for Caldwell or Hobbs

Edit: it was two first rounders for Sheil after the giants upped the price for him at the last minute from 1 first Dodorro wanted to pull out but the club forced the deal through.

If scuttlebut is true the giants wanted a similar package for Caldwell. Dodorro got his revenge in an unprofessional/unethical way ultimately getting Jai for 2 seconds and burnt every bridge with the giants.

The bad blood from this is why Bobby Hill plays for Collingwood and not Essendon right now

be more like Hobbs plus a first rounder

if we are going to be honest

yes JUH value has tanked but still reckon he has more value then a straight swap

Example Scenario we trade our two second rounders to GCS or Swans due to their NGA prospects receive there first rounder back and package that with Hobbs to the dogs and we can still hit the draft with two firsts

JUH has issues yes but its an example we get a KF at a nice age bracket while then going to the draft for more outside class
