Obviously, the comparison with T20 is the one that was brought up most often in the build up to tonight. However, they seem to have missed a lot of the point about what makes T20 work as a spectacle. In T20 cricket, they haven't changed the dimensions of the ground, the wickets or the stumps. The scoring is still the same as in the other forms of cricket. The size of the ball is the same. However, T20, through its truncated nature, encourages the most exciting and entertaining parts of the sport to occur more regularly (in the eyes of most people - Test fans can appreciate attritional cricket and the contest between batsman and bowler). Big hits, crazy shots (the ramp/reverse sweep), searing yorkers, booming bouncers and bamboozling leg spinners. These are the moments that stick in the mind, turn up on highlight reels around the world and are what people remember.

Think about the moments in a game of Australian Rules that really stick in the mind - it's the pack mark or the speccy, the big run down the wing, the miracle goal from the pocket, a player like a Martin or Dangerfield bursting forth from a pack and kicking a long range goal. Because of the nature of the way AFL X is set up, you really can't have those moments like you do in a proper game of Australian Rules. It takes away a lot of what makes Australian Rules great and you're left with a hollow shell. One of the games I watched had three 10 pointers kicked in a minute, going back and forth like a tennis ball over the net. If you'd seen three 6s in a row in a game of cricket, you'd be going nuts. Here, it felt like nothing, because the skill level required in this game in order to be able to do that seemed trivial in comparison - this is the pinnacle of the skill within the game and it felt so hollow.

That said, it does look like it'd be a fun game to play. Ironically, a lower skill level may have provided a better spectacle, but AFL players are too good with their skills for the most part that they made a mockery of the dimensions of the ground.

Would like to see the no backwards mark rule except inside 50 rule creep into the real stuff. Possibly last touch as well. Flashing goalposts is a nice touch as well but should be in team colours of whichever team kicks it (e.g. flashing orange and charcoal/grey for GWS)

Actually liked what I saw (about 20 mins of it), but think the AFLX format would be better on a normal oval. I don't think the concept will take off but can see some rules creeping into the real thing

Some great posts about it lacking the fundamentals of what makes AFL good. No great tackles, no pack marks, desperate smothers, explosive clearance, ruck tap to a rover, goal from the boundary etc.

One rule change they should make is instead of zooper goals they should flip it. 10 point goals should be awarded when the goal is scored from within 10m so that teams will kick long to 1 on 1 forwards to mark as well as having more difficult shots from the boundary.

AFLX, the answer to a question that nobody asked. I've been to training sessions where the players looked more desperate.

Tens of thousands go to watch these people play football. Watching tonight I couldn't help asking myself: "why the hell aren't they playing football?"

Zooper goal should be like international rule , but can be any players to guard against zooper goal instead of keeper only .

A summation of when I was looking forward to watching AFLX to after watching just 1 half of it......

People say they dont know why others have an issue with it and its pretty simple really apart from killing the physical nature of our game and turning it into a human version of the old atari game "pong" is the fact the AFL wont see this as a different game in a few years instead they will use parts of it and introduce it into the real AFL game because they think it would make it better.

Don’t see why people have such an issue with it.

It’s an opportunity to blow out some cobwebs, ease some young players into the side, get some fitness under the belt and work on skills in a reasonably competitive environment.

Gee if I didn’t know better I’d almost compare it to something like the Auckland Nines or the various sevens rugby competitions you see from time to time, things that don’t really matter in the scheme of things but can give people a taste of the main event.
Let 9 year olds play it then. It just takes the piss out of the game. Pointless, unnecessary, boring and embarrassing.

I was thinking this too. Get rid of the 40m, and set up the line 10-15m out, 9 points for a goal from inside that small arc. Would guarantee a few 1 on 1 contests and incentivise running and moving the ball with hands to reach that zone. Could probably also stand to have 9 players on the field instead of 7.

It is a kick and giggle, a bit of fun. Prefer it to the International Rules series. Tweak a few of the rules and I reckon it has legs.

I don’t actually think the format is what made it boring. It was the intensity it was played at. The teams deliberately avoided contests, and thus there was no spectacle and no big contested marks. It’s the same as any early preseason match ever really.

The format itself could be quite successful if there was something to play for, but I doubt they could come up with anything that would be worth risking for the regular season

Like it as a preseason game. Get to see young/ fringe players given a bit of responsibility. Think the rules need tweaking, but will happily keep watching.

Get rid of marking altogether, just have goals (no zoopers, no points). Others have suggested only scoring from within 40, don’t mind that either.
