Afl X WAS AWESOME

I ended up watching about 20 minutes of a replay with my dad last night, bemusement, uncontrollable laughter followed by boredom.

We are looking down on other countries, or anyone not interested in the game, if we think they just want to see balls go through some sticks over and over. I saw one tackle in about 20 minutes. Players weren't even going for speckies because they weren't necessary, why go for a difficult mark when it's so easy to get them?

I watched it until I changed the channel and this was on...

After Geelong's first two games, I changed channels to watch the Olympics, which was more replays of Australia events rather than live coverage, so I watched X-men. I only changed back for the Geelong v Adelaide final.

If it were a real AFL game in February, I'd have watched anyone play. It got especially bad when people kept just kicking long goals. We all know that most AFL players can score from 40m with ease.

AFLX [BREAK IT DOWN] LYRICS
[Intro: Chris Warren]
Are you ready?
You think you can tell us what to do?
You think you can tell us what to wear?
You think that you're better?
Well, you'd better get ready
Bow to the masters
BREAK IT DOWN!

[Verse 1: Chris Warren]
AFL into something, fool
We just got tired of doin' what ya told us to do
That's the breaks boy
Yeeeeeeeaaah
That's the breaks, little man
Break it down

[Hook]
AFLX!
AFLX!

[Verse 2]
You think you can tell me what to do?
You know who you're talkin' to?
Well, you'd better get used to the way the ball bounces
I've seen what you got, it measures in ounces
But that's the breaks boy
YEEAAAH
That's the breaks little man
Break it down!

[Hook]
AFLX!
AFLX!

The moment they introduced a 10 point goal and had it sponsored by Zooper Doopers and called it a Zooper goal, was the moment i feared for the games future.
Shameless branding has no place in our game.
What like TIGER this, TIGER that, TIGER town etc.

Shameless branding IS our game. POWER TO WIN!

Less congestion, more goals, less down time. Plenty of one on ones which i also really liked, we just don't get enough of that in the full version. Some negatives as well.

That zooper dooper rubbish just has to go though

The people who didn't get at least some enjoyment out of it are probably those types who like footy but no other sports.
Besides Aussie Rules I love Basketball and the NFL (when my Giants don't suck). I enjoy the Olympics. No offense but every team sport comes down to more than easy scoring over and over, even Basketball, where the best defensive teams tend to be the best teams, controlling and forcing turnovers is critical.

This game is exactly what all the people who hate clearances, stoppages, tackles, rucks, etc. this is what they wanted. And it absolutely, positively sucked.

Watched about 20 minutes.

Was like watching indoor footy with no tackling or pressure. Only difference was they used stupid silver balls (how ****ing dumb was this) and calling a goal a Zooper goal was ****ing stupid too.

In short, **** this game!

I think the concept would work well for amateurs and those that want to have a run around without waking up the next day feeling like they were hit by a train. I'm in my early 30s and I'd much prefer running around the smaller field, sneaking out the back for a few easy goals, than I would playing an actual game of footy.

But the spectacle itself was pretty poor. Part of the issue is that teams don't take the pre-season seriously and coaches are not going to dedicate time or resources into preparing for an AFLX match. But the rest of the problem stems from the fact that it removes a lot of what we like about footy.

I watched a fair bit of it. It wasn't terrible but it wouldn't be something I'd want to watch all year round.

Defense is pretty much non existent in that format. Tackling is gone. Contested marking is gone.
On the plus size you see some good attacking footy with quick and skillful teams. The whole Zooper goal thing is a bit cheesy but I reckon it could grow on me in time.

I'll probably enjoy it more tonight watching my own team play and seeing some youngsters out there (which ultimately is the purpose for viewers for all of preseason).

is that the format or the fact its a pre-season run around ?

Well the week before I watched the Essendon intraclub game and it would be no exaggeration to say I saw a lot of tackling and contested work in comparison.
Certainly I wouldn't suggest that the preseason comps are ever particularly high intensity (nor should they be) but AFL X and a regular preseason game are still quite different in that respect.

I watched AFLX with an open mind, as I hadn't invested any thought whatsoever in the game before hand.

Generally speaking, I found it pretty lacklustre - to the point where I ended out changing the channel.

The game appears to provide a good opportunity for young kids to get a run at it and serve as an overall warm up. That said, I don't think it's as woeful as others are making out.

4.5/10.
