I had no idea it was on. My twitter feed is just full of people making fun of it.

I get it's meant for overseas but err, how come AFL teams have to play it?

Concept still has potential. Perhaps 9 a side is worth experimenting with to make it a little more contested. The GF was noticeably more contestad which made it the best game of the night.

One also has to remember its only preseason so they won't be going that hard.

Shit concept. Boring. It's like watching a training drill.

Shouldn't last past this year. Maybe next year we can have AFL E-sports where the biggest gamers from each club battle it out on AFL Live... I'm sure that will appeal more to an international market than the crap we just saw.

Overall, I don't think it is such a bad concept. Couple of things:

- I think it was the teams that messed up the spectacle. AFLX is a game that players with X-factor would thrive in and I don't think that many teams put a lot of thought into what type of players they were going to play. Just seemed like they just gathered anyone other than their stars to go and play.
The only team that chose their team really well in my opinion was Fremantle in the game against Port Adelaide. Brad Hill and Michael Walters lit the stage up and it was actually quite fun watching that Fremantle side go at it. Adelaide and Geelong didn't do too bad either.

- The field may just be a little too small for professional athletes like AFL players. They can go from defence to attack with only 1 or 2 kicks. Maybe if it was a little more rectangular than square, it would be a better spectacle.

There's something there. AFLX has a future provided the AFL make smart decisions.

The big advantage it has over regular AFL is the lack of congestion and pace of play. In a way it resembles Basketball more than AFL because play is constant, instead of having constant stoppages and ball ups. I think they could add one or two more players to each team for a bit more physicality, but what's there is promising.

Gimmicks like the silver ball and zoopers are easily altered.

???

I get what they are trying to do with the soccer field idea, but a lot of the guys tonight were clearing the ball from defence to attack with one kick. I just don't know if the field size is right from an entertainment perspective because there is hardly any strategic link up happening before the ball goes inside forward 40. The field size may work better with less skilled or younger players that cannot kick as far.

Don’t see why people have such an issue with it.

It’s an opportunity to blow out some cobwebs, ease some young players into the side, get some fitness under the belt and work on skills in a reasonably competitive environment.

Gee if I didn’t know better I’d almost compare it to something like the Auckland Nines or the various sevens rugby competitions you see from time to time, things that don’t really matter in the scheme of things but can give people a taste of the main event.

hacking is rife... don't worry it is just mountains..

and we are all ready to campaign for the end before it is begun..

don't people, it is guaranteed to rival the other crap ideas of the aFl and well it can only sympathise with the small but lettuce leaves of the
games we know and love...

cranium is set to overload. and Boom.

don't be too effusive... don't make Cyril too much the criterion and make every one else the dude who is craving and burning.

just don't travel too far. we don't want people to be too much of a pawn in a game.

we just want them to be themselves. ;)

and you would say that everything everyone else does is shit... so what is the point sir..

what we do is absolute craft and working the dials and seeing the work come together...

just wait and see what happens and you will be surprised... :)

you always get bored with it all.. so what is next... you always complain. ... hand to hand.. brother to brother...

just awaiting the sensation of the AFL X to excite me and well it can't be all hat and hurry.

for god's sake just be a bit enthusiastic.. :thumbsu:

sensational you are.. boring I am not..

What were your honest thoughts on tonight, Gil?

Well said, I would say longer term we are just as likely to see it played in November / December than in February...

Some of the reaction here has been hysterical. Not unsurprising really given how folks here is wired.

...but anyone barking madly at AFLX and calling it circle work who also are inclined to bang on about "da congestion in the modern game"...can you please just grab your coat and your hat and f47k off now?

This concept is nothing new, i was playing this in the streets, park and schoolyard back in the 80's with jumpers as goals.

Yea SEN with ‘history is in the making’ and ‘first aflx goal for the record books’

No guys just another lightning premiership(s) with dodgy rules. Are there three Michel tuck medals?

Said it on our board but I thought it was way too uncontested to be enjoyable. Needed a hard edge to it.

You are probably right to an extent but obviously the key thing to remember is if it is more enjoyable to proper fans than the actual game than that's a concern for the proper game!

Gil annoyingly again referred to it as "having the best bits of our game" tonight which it plainly doesn't. The richest parts of the game are in the contested elements and even open flowing ball movement is great in contrast to that contest.

But the point of this is to offer the more accessible parts of the game - i.e. fast skilled ball movement - as an entry level for people without the palette and / or the patience for the traditional form of the game...similar to rugby 7s (where there is no way the average rugby fan prefers that to "15s")

This is the only time I've ever thought the AFL might send people to post here. It was awful to watch.

Entirely agree. Piss the experiment off right now. I would rather have a normal pre season game without all the rubbish trappings, thank you very much. I wish the ****in AFL would jusr leave the game alone.

It was ok. Not going to take over the world. Liked the Eagles take on it with no senior players at all. Wouldn't be the worst thing to open preseason with every year if they bring in a under 22 or under 50 AFL games rule or something. Was not interested at all in watching Tom Hawkins or Sidebottom play.
