You have missed the point entirely. The AFL is forking out millions of dollars to get this concept working and they are absorbing the losses. At present the crowds are huge but its a free game to bring the family to. The real trick is to create a competition worth watching that the people will pay for. I don't think they have that at the moment. Some teams are virtually incorporating a 'flood at all cost and counter attack if possible' approach to games where as they hope just through the natural course of the game they will score but with congestion they will flood the opposition to a point of where its almost impossible to score because they cant kick and move the ball fast enough to break through the congestion.

AFL teams have enough gun players in their midfield to break congestion open where as there are 2 players in the entire competition good enough to do it and that's Pearce and Phillips. The majority of players just dont have the skill strength or speed to play against congestion. The game needs to be opened up, these girls aren't professional footballers either. Most are outright rank amateurs who are professional players in other sports. Coaches need to sit back and think about that for a minute before putting these girls into game styles that just are beyond their capabilities. Until these girls are full time professional AFL players 12 months of the year, they need to play an easier style. Yes that could mean one or two teams dominate for a few years but swings and roundabouts like the AFL has been for over 100 years.
Dozed off half way through your post but are you saying because its afl funded they decide how teams should play?

Same go fo GWS, Bulldogs, Saints, GC in men's league who are AFL funded?

If WCE play GWS, umpires won't start the game until 2 GWS players are in the fwd50 and def50 but WCE can do as they please and GWS have to leave 15m free agead of the stoppage?

The point of the memo is to simply create a more interesting game and stop coaches from over coaching players.
It's interesting how previously I kept being frustrated with the girls and put more the blame on their poor skills and inability to cope with defensive pressure. The memo has raised a fair point that coaches are partly to blame for making the game less user-friendly for the players to adopt and/or low scoring giving fans less reasons to be excited.

Who woulda thunk it. Coaches coaching players. Not surprised the AFL didn't think of it.

I think the AFL is not trying to overpower the coaches, but more so to encourage coaching to improve the spectacle of the game for the spectactors. Purist AFL fans will still watch however they play or coached. It's the casual fans and the 'indifferent to AFLW' fans are what the AFL trying to catch, not the purist fans.

Then they may as well follow Port or the Gold Coast or Brisbane if they jump off and on depending on the win loss and spectacle of the game. Coaches will sort themselves out. The response might be slow and it might frustrate a lot but for those of us who started out in the 70s with the football we saw various tactics come in in the 80s starting with hard tagging (stopping 1) to the flood ( stopping all) and even Robert Walls 'Huddle' yet ironically we see the following

May 10, 2002 - Former Carlton player and premiership coach Robert Walls has always maintained that the most constructive thing a team in St Kilda's place can do is to go forward and kick a few goals, even at the cost of yielding many of them. At least, he argues, players and fans then have something to feel good about ...

Clarkos Cluster , Neeshams Line, Crowbots , Sydney , Pagans Paddock (which was stolen from Hawthorn and Hudson) Intersting stat. Wayne Careys first game for Nth Melbourne? 49 to 13

tl;dr Coaches and the game will sort itself out over time

AFL men's league in their infancy, was likely met with curiosity and not knowing what to expect and how the scoring rate would be. Fast forward to today, the AFLW is met with scepticism and negativity, due to a certain level of expectation of fans from the history of watching AFL.
There are 3 contrasting groups from how I see it:
1. Fans who just enjoy footy, and just like to see a good old slogfest between 2 passionate teams. (I'm guessing this is more a minority group)
2. Fans who enjoy footy, but expect value for their money or time invested in this viewing.
3. Fans who support female sport in the realms of elitism.

The coaches of the AFLW are certainly creating results and spectacle for the group 1 in the above. But the majority of the fans fall in group 2 and 3. And the AFL are just reminding the coaches that if groups 2 and 3 are not being looked after, eventually fans might drop off, and not enough fans to support for the healthy continuation of AFLW.

What a ****** up view of the world you have. All you ask is women be as good as men before they can compete professionally and be given coverage.

By that standard, no women's sport would ever be telecast, or be given any professional status because they can't match it with men.

Women's tennis? Sorry you shouldn't be on centre court, you're not as skilful as the men. Women's athletics, swimming etc - sorry what are you doing getting the same level of opportunity in the Olympics as the men?

The reality is no matter how skilful women become you will never be happy seeing them get any attention.

You’d have to be almost a mental incompetent to make such a bungled misrepresentation of both my argument and the objective facts.

Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki didn’t just pop up on Rod Laver Arena, uncultivated like summoned lottery winners.

They started playing tennis as small children, worked their way through junior ranks, gave up their teenage years in pursuit of greatness and then practiced almost every day of their lives to get where they are now.

But yeah, let’s compare those athletes to AFLW players and then pretend they both deserve the same outcome. Are you an idiot?

Sure all these are valid. Did anything change at Sydney when Demetriou had a shot at them? Sure in each and every line he says ''its a personal view'' well keep it personal Andrew. They won the flag

AFL chief Andrew Demetriou has joined a long list of critics of the Sydney Swans' defensive style of play, predicting that Sydney will lose more games than they win if the tactics of coach Paul Roos continue.

While stressing that his view was personal, Demetriou described the Swans' typically dour game style as "unattractive", and underlined the importance of the NSW market to the AFL.

"We don't tell football clubs how to play, but obviously we take notice of how things are going," Demetriou told radio Triple M before the Swans took on West Coast at Subiaco Oval last night.

"And I guess I, like others, would like to see the Sydney Swans winning more games because it's a very important market for us.

I absolutely agree with you that the game of AFLW will evolve, similar to the after the Swans showing a defensive blueprint and the game of AFL still continues to evolve.
The situation of AFLW is different than the men's though, and unprecedented in the last 2 years because in the past there weren't any national league for the game to grow and improve on this format. The other thing that is different is the population of fans is nowhere near the level of support as the men's AFL. I admit I actually didn't even know that a female league even existed (at any level) prior to last year!
So going on from your Sydney Swans example, Paul Roos had the comfort of doing whatever he wanted to his team as long as he won the Premiership. Roos would sleep easy if his style is competitive and knowing fans will continue to watch for the subsequent years. In the AFLW as we speak, fan support is at a minimal level, and more importantly, there are no guarantees it will attract more fans than it already has. So the coaches do have some level of responsibility in carrying out a team win, but to continue the growth of fan population (for AFLW).

Complete and utter idiocy your post. Get a clue. The women aren't any better footballers than your average c grade footballer so AFLW coaches putting in game plans that the women cant play well is insanity and it doesnt even rank as even playing to win. They are playing an ultra defensive game in the hope they don't lose. How people cant see that with teams ultra flooding tactics is beyond me. The girls simply aren't physically capable to clear congestion like the guys. If you look at every AFL footballer, they generally fit a mould for a certain position and most players can hit under pressure a kick of about 50 metres which makes it hard to congest the play and keep it in with certainty or they have set players who can clunk big marks in congestion they can aim at. Semi pro football leagues have plenty of players who are AFL quality but may lack just the athleticism. The girls simply dont have any of this. Alot are soccer, basketball, rugby and netball players with only a few coming from legitimate football backgrounds.

If you got two teams in the local amateur c grade competition flooding like this it would look like the games we saw on the weekend. The game would be better served teaching the girls to play football rather then playing a hit and hope congestion play. Adelaide did it really well last year where they refused to play such a game.

Think of the AFLW playing to win strategies this way. What if the Australian and English Cricket teams played an ashes series where both teams simply decided to bowl slow yorkers wide of off stump with the field stacked with players defending the off side. They did this because they dont want to risk drives and hook shots that result in boundaries by gunning for wickets. so they look for low score declarations. Virtually both teams have minimised the risk to as little as possible. Thats what AFLW have done. We may not score but they aren't going to do it either.

And when Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki started playing tennis as small children they had a professional path to follow. But you hate the fact that any girls might now be able to have such a path to follow in the AFL - you think the quality of women's tennis reached the point it is now through magic?

It's always the case with people like you - you say "Oh look, I'm in favour of women being able to play sport professionally... when they're good enough", and then you ****ing hate any single thing that will allow that to happen, so then you can say "Oh see, I told you, they're not good enough".

And remember what this is all about - this is a thread about cheering on women who play for the CROWS - the club you say you support, and yet you can't even do that - instead you chose to come on here and shit on them. Top work, champ.

So what you are saying is we need zone rules etc in every level except AFL...and possibly some bottom AFL teams too who can win against floods?
