Women's Footy AFLW Crows in 2019

A bit harsh JW. While she struggled a bit in the Minor round I thought she was immense in both finals, providing run, good disposal and in general a real "connecting" player for us.

I agree, she did a good job. Both her and Dayna Cox were great as that niggling pressure player in the back half who can also provide forward run. Having them do well in the back half of the ground allowed us to move the likes of SLT and Ponter up forward.

Still, we have some cover. Gore is obviously ready to go and can slot into McCormick's role. If either or both of Scheer and Phillips get back, we have to squeeze Wallace and possibly Metcalfe back in the side too, which could release one of the forwards to go down back (possibly Considine?). And then there's whoever we draft this year.

McCormick is a quality player. She was selected in the premiership team's side for every match she was available. If she was still here in 2020 she'd most likely be playing as well. But we can live without her.

I’m actually a McCormick fan in the first 2 years. This season she’s changed roles but was necessary as Thompson and Ponter are definitely better small forwards. As a defender she’s done a reasonable job, just my main point was that I can see others in the team can make more of an impact for next year, and more so if we were to lose a regular AFLW player, then she’d be the one I’d be less grumpy about.

McCormick is probably the biggest of our losses, I wonder if she'll be back in a few years time? She's the only one of our losses that was a regular part of our team this year (chosen whenever she was available). Sedunary and Riley were both quality depth but ultimately not needed. Hewett is quality but I'm just not sure where she fits in our current side. The rest aren't particularly important. If Perkins can get her fitness up she could come back to hurt us, but it's not like she was likely to play in our squad next year.

Sedge is bloody good. She was injured though, and once fit wasn't match fit, and the season is short - so didn't play.

It would have been interesting to see how Sedunary went in our 2019 team. In 2017 she was good in patches but frustrating a lot of the time, she seemed to determined to attack and try to run past players, and often got herself into trouble.

In our 2019 team, we were all about getting loose ball in the forward line and relying on our players to swoop on it and turn it into goalscoring opportunities. I feel like it would have suited her style of play, but ultimately it wasn't to be.

Will be keen to see how she goes at the Saints.

Good to see them both still in the system.

Riley is a capable player, she just wasn't as good as our other options this year. Whenever we had injuries she found her way into the side. She's got leadership experience too, handy for a start-up side.

Lugg never seemed to get a go this year, but she was alright in the trial match this year and played most of the matches last year. Will be interesting to see how she goes. If nothing else she can take a bit of intellectual property from the premiership side to the Lions.

Read somewhere that Mo Hope and her Fiance were keen to have kids - would effect both of their liens of work (Model/Footballer) so maybe that why Mo is not playing?

She's been overrated by many over the past few years, but she's still a walk up start for most sides

I don't think fitness was an issue with Perkins in the end. I just think that her whole game was based around her being a big girl and became a one dimensional leading forward that could dominate mediocre smaller players. In her first year of AFLW she did just that, however as time went on and teams started scouting and drafting better to suit elite defensive strategies her game strategy became out dated. Because she never played any other way she has become unfortunately useless. I am not sure from what I have seen in amateur and SANFL girls games she would be any good now either in any lower competition. I hope for one she can go and find another element to her game and at least be able to play at a reasonable level. Being the same height as midfielders was never going to help her long term.

None of the trio played this year, with Allan missing due to Australian Army commitments and Hewett (ankle) and Sedunary (foot) injured. The Crows might be looking for another ruck/forward option in the draft, given Metcalfe will be coming off a knee reconstruction and Jess Foley turned 36 last month.

That is 6 picks plus an extra 2 if we place those with the ACL curse as Inactive until they are fit.

Swain intrigues as she would have a 10cm to 18cm over other Rucks. She could be a project over preseason.
I would think we draft McKinnon and maybe a second prospect for Phillips/Scheer whilst they are on the Inactive List recuperating ACL.

Having a ruck that much taller than the other players is intriguing, as long as she's not a liability around the ground.

Given we still have solo access to our draft pool, we can probably also afford to not take her this year and see how she develops, if we want. Assuming Port aren't going to come knocking next year.

Adelaide's attack will be under scrutiny for a team that averaged 9 goals a game in 2019. They kicked 79 goals for the season but have lost 21 goal to injuries and de-listing. Phillips with 11 in 9 games and Scheer with 8 in 8 games. Any suggestions to make up the loss

Only months ago, Chelsea Randall was making the biggest decision of her AFLW career so far: Should she head home to Perth and join expansion club West Coast? Or stick with the Crows where she was well on her way to winning her second AFLW premiership?
Her parents were adamant she’d return home and speculation was swirling in footy circles that the lure was too great.

Then came the phone call she wasn’t expecting.

“My dad called me and said: ‘I just want you to know that I love you and no matter what decision you make, we’re OK here. Don’t feel like you have to come home for us, I can see you’re happy there and that’s all we want you to be’,” she recalls.

Her parents’ endorsement or not, Randall had already made up her mind — she was staying at Adelaide — but it was comforting to know she had their support, particularly since both her mum Linda and dad Brett, had been so supportive of her football career from when she was a lanky 11-year-old being laughed at on the footy field for playing a “boys’ sport”.

Randall makes no apology for discussing her playing options with the Eagles, one of four new teams joining the AFLW in 2020.

“I think any elite athlete — AFLW or AFL men’s player — has to keep their options open because you don’t know what’s around the corner in this rollercoaster world,” she muses.

“It’s silly to not have a coffee and be open and listen with intent and just find out.”

For Randall, happiness came first. And she’s pretty happy in Adelaide and even happier to sign a two-year deal to stay at the Crows.

“As much as I miss my family and friends back home, I’ve made new friends and new challenges here and I’m loving my football and I feel like we’ve got an opportunity to continue to learn and grow,” she says.

THE inaugural SANFL Women’s Showdown will take place this weekend at City Mazda Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

A number of SANFL Statewide Super Women’s League stars will be involved in the exciting contest that will be played as a curtain-raiser for the SANFL Statewide Super League contest between West Adelaide and Adelaide.

The selection process for players follows the same guidelines as the Next Generation Academies for the two AFL clubs.

Adelaide will be represented by players from Sturt, North Adelaide, Glenelg and Central District, while West Adelaide, South Adelaide, Norwood and Woodville-West Torrens players will be chosen for Port Adelaide.

SANFL General Manager of Football Adam Kelly said the new series would provide great incentive to the rising stars of the SANFL Statewide Super Women’s League to push their claims in an elite environment ahead of the 2019 AFLW Draft.

“This initiative complements the expansion of the SANFL Statewide Super Women’s League in 2019,” Kelly said.

“Importantly, it provides for the aspiration of players in the competition. The players will have the opportunity to compete against the best players from the League and at the same time, will be given an AFL club experience. This will support their development and allow them to showcase their abilities in the lead up to the 2019 AFLW Draft.”

The match will be live-streamed on the SANFL’s YouTube Channel, with commentary from Peter Walsh and Crows AFLW premiership player Rachael Killian.

The first bounce of the inaugural Women’s Showdown will be at 12.25pm, ahead of the match between West Adelaide and the Crows.
