PAYMENT TIERS

The fresh Collective Bargaining Agreement has ratified tiers until 2027.

In 2023 the payments were $87,192 (tier one), $71,806 (tier two), $61,548 (tier three) and $51,290 (tier four) – with two or three tier one players per club, six tier twos, six tier threes and 16 tier fours.
By 2027 they will range from $117,968 (tier one) to $72,373 (tier four).

Some players ranked as a tier four had their salaries beefed up to effectively a flat tier three through ASA payments (Additional Service Agreements).

There are 2 players outside the ASA and also the ASA to be phased out in 2025

Well they further confirmed it after announcing it last week with that total “could be re-drafted” nonsense.

Her first knee-reco was the one that stopped her having any possibility of a solid career at AFLW level. When she started her main weapon was her lateral movement and ability to side step an opponent as well as her ‘brick wall’ tackling ability, after that ACL her movement was shot and all that was left was a poorly skilled player who couldn’t handball or find a teammate by foot more than 10 metres away (seems to be a worrying Martin sister trait).

Trying to turn her into a defender after first failing to try to turn her into a tagger was probably one of Doc Clarke’s worst/most costly moves in his time as coach given her infamous 2022 Brisbane prelim performance.

Still though like Considine who just hung up the boots ends as a 2x Premiership player.

Speaking of footballer’s more suited to the annuls of time, given no announcement it looks like Deni Varnhagen has managed to ‘cook’ herself up another contract at the top level .

True, it also ends up being that Hannah’s and probably Rachele’s best contribution to football and the football club might be that they brought Chelsea Biddell down to West Adelaide to give football a go.

Pretty sure it was Biddell's idea for the three of them to try out at Westies, but certainly, the three of them coming to Adelaide Uni together and deciding on a whim to try out was very important to us. Crazy to think that none of the three had even played football competitively prior to 2018! It was only because AFLW started in 2017 that they were inspired to give it a go. And now all three are premiership players.

Someone like Biddell is a textbook example of the value of an AFLW competition. She wasn't even playing the game despite her dad literally being a football coach. Then an elite women's football comp gets started and is broadcast on national TV and it inspires her to give it a try, and six years later she's an All-Australian. If AFLW hadn't started in 2017, chances are we would never have heard her name.

I don't understand the salary comments. The salaries are still on tiered payments, every club pays the exact same salary per tier, other than your top two players. Unless they're saying that Port's new draftees are immediately going on higher tiers than most of the rest of the playing group? (Which to be fair, is probably justified...)

I can state only what I've heard third hand but 6 figures in 3 years time was thrown around. Which would be the equivalent of being a tier 1 player. So I guess that's what's happened.

AFLW: Crows add Irish rookie

Amy Boyle-Carr. Teammate of Bonner's, apparently.

“We were actually watching some vision of Yvonne Bonner ahead of the AFLW Supplementary Draft earlier this year and Amy kept catching our attention with her dashing runs.

Already a dual-sport athelete.

The 22-year-old excels in both Gaelic Football and soccer, having played both sports since she was a child.

She is a three-time Gaelic Football Ulster champion for Donegal, winning player of the match in the 2019 Ulster final.

Boyle-Carr has also represented Ireland at national level in soccer when she was selected to play in a FIFA World Cup Qualifier against the Netherlands in 2018, aged only 17.

Season Six Premiership players Najwa Allen and Hannah Munyard have also recommitted, alongside 22-under-22 team member Madison Newman, exciting forward Jess Waterhouse and two-time Premiership utility Deni Varnhagen.

Mentioned in the article she’s staying in Ireland until the completion of the next Ladies GAA season for Donegal which is around April so the SANFLW running March-June means she could but it’s doubtful as the Crows will probably prefer to keep her development in-house.

You’d think it’s academic that the 6 unsigned will be all signed in the next couple of weeks/month, so in the end it’s 4 off the 2023 main list (Whiteley, Bonner, Ward, McKinnon) & 4 in (Boileau, Henry, Tarlinton, Levy).

Surprised it didn’t mention it directly in the article but with the rookie signing of Boyle-Carr and announcement Levy signed on for 2024 she looks to have decided to stick with footy and has been upgraded to the main list .

Only further change will depend on that ACL of Ballard and how they assess that before the season starts next year.

Helluva show of faith in Brooke Tonon to sign her to the end of 2025 considering they have a penchant for dropping her every 2nd week.

Interesting the mix of who’s signed on for 2 years and those that have just signed on for the 1 year deal, feel it is either an attempt at creative salary cap management or some players may be still hanging out for a bigger bag either from the club or some other club for 2025 & beyond. Slightly annoying seeing Ponter, Jones, Prowse & Gould on that 2024 list because like we saw this year they will have plenty of clubs sniffing around and offering inflated contracts at the end of next season.

The cynic in me also feels Ballard has maybe gotten a 2025 deal over others due to goodwill over her acl recovery.

Yeah I’m with you, maybe knowing how highly she’s obviously rated internally wasn’t thinking she’d be in danger of being delisted next year but could/should have others go past her next year to at the very least put pressure on her spot in the team.

Pretty much off the Martin train after the last 2 seasons, has been the main disappointment as a player post 2022 flag, she made rapid improvements when she first got to AFLW level and looked like she was going to progress into a tough in and under clearance player but has just become the Jared Petrenko of the women’s side.

She really only now excels at applying some pressure acts and laying some big tackles, she can barely kick it more than 20m to a teammate and when she does it’s usually loopy & sideways and puts them under pressure, handballs are either wayward or she nearly misses the ball with her fist and can barely handle the ball in the first place almost like it’s too big for her as she fumbles and double grabs most of the time when getting possession.

The slack you give her for playing a difficult role as a small forward is definitely tightening, even if she hasn’t been helped given it’s a role she’s forced to play though as like Petrenko she really isn’t a small forward.

How many per tier? Gould is arguably sitting alongside Hatchard and just behind Marinoff as our most important player right now given our dearth of goal-scoring options. Prowse next tier down but looking like a linchpin of our defence for the next decade.

The default scenario is (based on 2025 salaries)

2 players at Tier 1, $109,760
6 players at Tier 2, $89,559
6 players at Tier 3, $76,091
16 players at Tier 4, $67,337

However clubs can adjust their tier structure as long as they don't go over the total, and don't have more than 3 tier 1 players. For example, if we run with only one tier 1 player, it saves enough money to move two tier 4 players into tier 3. Or if we run with zero tier 1 players, we can move three tier 3 players into tier 2. If we move one tier 2 player down to tier 3, and one tier 3 player down to tier 4, we could have an extra tier 1.

The club can also pay up to $127,693 in total across the entire list for additional services. The top two paid players at the club are not included in that total, they can be paid as much as you like for additional services.

It seems safe to assume that Marinoff and Hatchard are our two tier 1 players.

Filling out tier 2 is a bit tougher. Sarah Allan and Randall seem obvious, and probably Biddell got there in her most recent contract. Beyond that, probably Ponter? Maybe Gould got there in her most recent contract. Possibly SLT given her experience? Or Jess Allan? Kelly? Jones?

Here is my guess:

Tier 1 - Marinoff, Hatchard
Tier 2 - S. Allan, Randall, Biddell, Gould, Ponter, Jones
Tier 3 - Kelly, Newman, Charlton, J. Allan, Thompson, Prowse
Tier 4 - Boileau, Martin, Munyard, Kustermann, Varnhagen, Levy, Smith, Waterhouse, Henry, Talinton, Boyle-Carr, Ballard, Tonon, Goodwin, Allen, Mueller


From that group, Newman and Prowse would rightly expect to move up to tier 2. Jones or Ponter could move down, or maybe Randall or S. Allan makes the sacrifice?

Goodwin would reasonably expect to move up to tier 3, but not many options to move down. Kelly, perhaps?

As much as Hatchard's form has been down, she's still one of our best players and I don't think we would yet move her down from tier 1.
