We need to make some actually tough list decisions.

We need to free up a genuine position in our best 23, so I would "retire" Thompson

I would delist both Allen and Varnhagen, they're experienced but I don't see any future for them in the team. I don't see leadership as an issue in the squad.

I would delist Smith and Waterhouse, their ceiling is depth. I would also consider delisting Tarlinton if they have no genuine plans to play her when selected for more than 5 minutes

I would consider delisting Levy, I don't think she will make it. Henry gets a second chance as she was injured this season. I would have delisted Martin but she's contracted, so maybe consider a trade. Kustermann on thin ice but I think she's being played out of position

We need to immediately bring in Boileau and our first round pick this year into the 23, and target a few trades. I'd be targeting 5 to 6 list changes and positional changes within the 23

B S. Allan - Prowse
HB Goodwin - Biddell - ???

R J. Allan - Marinoff - Charlton
C Newman - Hatchard - Kelly

HF Ponter - Randall - Jones
F ??? - Gould

I Boileau - 1st Round - ??? - ??? - ???

At this stage the last four list spots would go to Mueller (defense), Tonon (forward), Ballard (mid), Munyard (forward) and Kustermann (mid/defense) but I wouldn't have any as locks.

We desperately need pace off half back, pace and goal sense in the small forward role, and more athleticism through the midfield
Yeah but we all know it’s about relationships, remaining level headed and identifying how to problem solve. That’s the Doc Clarke 101 mantra for everything including trusting those you already have on the list that have already been taught his system & have bought into these processes, which means you don’t need to waste so much time by having to teach this again to a larger group of players from other clubs who you have to retrain to fit in to your system.

I remember Kelly in her first season with the club before being injured looking absolutely lost & not knowing where Clarke wanted her to run but 12 months later she was able to learn the system and was great (she dropped off again this year but that’s another matter). Clarke struggles to teach/fit new players into his system at least for initial seasons and given the short pre-seasons and limited training sessions he sees this as something he just doesn’t have enough time for.

Prowse & Gould are a couple and both were very close to going to Richmond last year with McKinnon

Hopefully both stay as they are integral to the future as they are key defender and key forward.

Assuming they both leave, we should demand 4 picks inside the top 20. Would offer a pick to PA for Ewing, ask the question of Grigg from Western Bulldogs (CDFC girl), and go for Poppy Scholz from Glenelg

I would also look at moving Ponter and Hatchard on with Thompson, Waterhouse and Vanhaegen getting delisted.

Obviously we need to bring some speed (and skill) into the team. I'd keep Martin, she came good in the second half of this season. I didn't realise Chelsea Randall was contracted til the end of next year. Felt sure she'd retire this year. (She was certainly playing like someone knowing the end is coming). Prowse and Gould need to be locked in IMO. The biggest change I'd make is in the coaching department.

That's quite the power couple! Hopefully the success they've both had this year will convince them to stay. It sounds like if one stays then the other stays as well.

She was acceptable in the finals series, but pretty poor prior to that. I'd have her on the cusp of delisting depending on how many players we intend to bring in. She was very close friends with Biddell prior to their AFLW careers starting, I wonder if that will have any bearing on keeping her around?

However, Carlton is likely to be unsuccessful in its attempts to prise Adelaide gun Maddi Newman away from the Crows with the winger now widely expected to re-sign and remain in South Australia.

Elsewhere, Zoe Prowse is expected to join Newman in staying at Adelaide, despite interest from Carlton and Sydney, though Taylah Levy has attracted interest from a host of clubs including the Swans, the Blues and the Giants.

That's good news. It'll be interesting to see how we do this this year. There is a definite need to bring in new blood with a real requirement for skills and speed.

There's no news so far on any players we might be bringing in, but both Newman and Prowse are expected to stay

With Prowse it seemed more to do with opportunity wasnt it?

Last year she didn't get great game time. Did this year though, so doubt she'd leave now.

On our list. I do feel the talent is already there.

But I would like to get a small/medium forward in, someone like a Hannah Ewings.

And if there's anyone else out there we could bring home, someone like a Lauren Young, go for it.

Prowse played every game last year other than round 10 when half a dozen players were rested, and she won our best defensive player award. Sarah Allan missed most of 2023, and Prowse got to step into her spot.

It was 2022 when Prowse was a fringe player, who was only tried as a defender right near the end of the season. By the end of 2023 she was firmly established, although she may have been wondering what would happen when Sarah Allan returned. It turns out, Prowse got to keep the spot and Allan was the one who got moved around to compensate!

Very good news that Newman and Prowse are staying, which presumably means Gould will as well. Those are three of our most important players.

Levy would be a loss, but only in the sense that she is currently in our best 21. In reality, we need to find an upgrade for her anyway, her leaving would just force our hand on that front.

Is this the first draft where the players aren't state-tied? Shame if so, as Indy Rasheed strikes me as the exact player we need ie. quality fwd finisher who is also at home in the midfield. Otherwise, one of the Centrals girls like Evans or McKee seem to be more realistic options near our pick.

I believe players could nominate in the national pool previously, but this is the first one where they don't have the option of staying with the state pool.

If it were still a state draft, you'd have to think Port would take Rasheed before us, although I guess we could have tried to trade ahead of them considering they actually went pretty deep in the finals. Still, given our pathetic trade performance a couple of years ago where we agreed to a multi-team trade that saw Port regain position in front of us anyway, I wouldn't trust us to get that right.

As it is though, if non-SA teams are going to draft an interstate player like Rasheed, we shouldn't confine ourselves to just taking local players either. Get as strong a draft pick as we can and bring the best available talent here.

3 of my main targets I wanted the Crows to target this offseason were Bella Smith, Tara Bohanna & Lily Mithen and all have been mentioned being in trade talks and guess who’s not mentioned as being after them? Classic old asleep at the wheel Phil Harper who just thinks his job is to retain the same list including bottom half of the list dregs over and over again.

Can’t believe they’re not mentioned being after Smith, who as a tall forward is who the Crows are crying out for and is originally from South Australia. That’s a literal invitation for the Crows to chase her but no Carlton, Geelong, North Melbourne and Fremantle are the ones after her 😒.

Meanwhile Port are set to land Ella Heads a very good player for Sydney in defence, I mean there’s an aggressive club who’s seen a weakness and gone after a player to fix it.

Lily Mithen is very good friends with Marinoff and is exactly the player the team needs with her experience and quick feet in the midfield, surely they could try to get Marinoff to convince her to come to the Crows.

As well as a tall forward the Crows desperately need another experienced midfielder or halfback this offseason (Mithen's Melbourne teammate Sarah Lampard - a quick experienced winger/halfback is another I’d target).

It has become very obvious in recent years far too much has been relied on those who are inexperienced or simply those who can’t keep their heads in finals. Honestly if they don’t get players in to improve those areas you can already write off any improvement next year.

Until the club actually goes out and lands another semi-decent player from another club I will never not believe that ever since Niamh Kelly rang up Harper and asked to join back in 2022 that he doesn’t just wait for the phone to ring & for a player to ask him to join again.

Hawthorn makes a hard decision (delisting her) much easier
I still find it a slightly weird decision on her behalf, unless she was told she was going to be delisted and was told to actively seek out a club, but seeing as she’s in the leadership group here and given history I find it very unlikely the club would have had the balls to delist her given that.

It’s not like she’s requested a move to a weak club either, she’s very much just as likely to be outside the best 21 there as well.

Munyard finally started to look pretty good in the back half of the season, so good to keep her.
Yes as soon as she was dispelled to the forward line and was no longer running into opposition players and turning it over higher up the ground she looked a bit more competent.

Wouldn’t surprise me if like I suggested a few weeks back clubs had tried to offer a package deal to get both Newman & Munyard over.

Again though this shows me just how passive those running the club have become, clubs are coming after them trying to pick off talent from them and they are just trying to fill the moat up with water and pulling the drawbridge up to keep their people in and keep enemies out.

Deni Varnhagen has retired

Did she really win our best defensive player award in 2019, a year where we had Sarah Allan, Chelsea Randall, Marijana Rajcic and Courtney Cramey all playing quality football back there? That's surprising to me.

She's been mostly a non-factor since 2019, and I was far from impressed with her anti-vaccine stance, but nobody can take away her contributions in those early few years. I'll never forget her slotting that goal in the 2017 grand final. And returning to the top level after having a kid is no small feat either.

We should probably also thank her for protecting Dayna Cox as a child too :)

I always thought she played midfield/wing.
Protect Dayna Cox?
I always liked Dayna Cox. She was a good small defender. Her career was ended from injury or loss of joy from what I recall, or maybe both. I met her once post retirement.
