Injury update: Ellie Blackburn

The Bulldogs vice-captain will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2024 NAB AFLW Season.

Western Bulldogs vice-captain Ellie Blackburn will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2024 NAB AFLW Season after sustaining a significant mid-foot injury.

The 29-year-old suffered a disruption to the mid-foot ligament in her left foot during the final minute of the loss to West Coast on Thursday night.

She will require surgery to repair the damage, ruling her out of a return to competitive action this year.

“We’re all devastated for Ellie, who has been one of our most durable and reliable players and was set for another impactful campaign,” GM of Women’s Football, Patrice Berthold, said.

“After conducting a thorough review of available options, our medical staff have deemed surgery as the best course of action to facilitate her return to play in 2025.

“We’ll wrap our arms around Ellie and provide her with as much support as she needs throughout this entire process to ensure she can be at her best with us next year.”

We really cannot catch a break with injuries, for once we actually have a relatively healthy list and then lose our most important player for the season. We've never played an AFLW match without Blackburn so it will certainly be a different-looking team for the remainder of the season. We're already young and inexperienced enough so the next couple of months will be mighty tough.

There is a lot of pressure now on the leadership group with Berry, Bennetts, Fitzgerald, Grant and Pritchard all having to step up. Looking for positives this may be one of them since we can no longer rely on Blackburn carrying the team, some of our more experienced players can lead the way.

Our centre setup has generally been Edmonds, Pritchard, Blackburn and Carruthers this year with a mix of Barwick and Berry with Borg as the second ruck. Grigg and Gutknecht have also attended one centre bounce each.



Berry has a decent centre-bounce record so I'd be tempted to give her more time with a mix of Barwick and Grigg as well. Grigg has the speed and Barwick is good user of the ball on the inside.

Dom Carbone, Keeley Hardingham and Jaimi Tabb have been recognised in the 2024 rebel VFLW Team of the Year, announced at Monday night’s VFL/W Awards.

It marks a second consecutive inclusion for Carbone, who averaged 18.4 disposals (league-high), and five tackles in her debut season as skipper.

She was named at ruck rover.
Tabb and Hardingham are celebrating their maiden selections, following breakout campaigns in the red, white and blue.

Tabb averaged 13.9 disposals and 7.5 contested possessions from her 13 games, while Hardingham averaged 17.6 touches and 22.2 hitouts.

Hardingham was named the starting ruck, while Tabb was picked on the half-forward flank.

The trio were the Bulldogs’ most consistent players across the 2024 season, highlighted by their top three finish in the Club’s Best and Fairest count last month.

Williamstown's Eliza Straford was named captain of the side, while North Melbourne's Brett Gourley was named coach.

Dom Carbone has capped off a remarkable 2024 campaign by claiming the Lambert-Pearce Medal.

Western Bulldogs VFLW captain Dom Carbone has capped off a remarkable 2024 campaign by claiming the Lambert-Pearce Medal.

Announced at Monday night's VFL/W Awards, Carbone polled 17 votes from 14 matches to be crowned the league's Best and Fairest player.

It caps off a remarkable campaign, which saw her lead the team to its first Grand Final appearance since 2019.
In her debut season as skipper, Carbone also averaged a league-high 18.4 disposals and five tackles to be named at ruck rover in the VFLW Team of the Year.

The Western Bulldogs have made four changes ahead of their Mid-Week Footy clash against Brisbane at Brighton Homes Arena.

Versatile tall Kaylee Kimber has been selected to make her red, white and blue debut, while Heidi Woodley will play her first game of the 2024 season.

Ellie Gavalas has been recalled, while Cleo Buttifant has recovered from a calf complaint.

As announced earlier this week, Ellie Blackburn will be sidelined for the remainder of the season.


Elisabeth Georgostathis (managed), Analea McKee and Bree McFarlane have also come out of the side.

The first bounce will be at 7.15pm AEST on Wednesday night, and broadcast via 7mate, Fox Footy and Kayo Sports.

I don’t understand this either, it was suggested she be played on the wing or down back to get her in the game, to get time into because she will take time, and the ball never down other end. But no we don’t play.

McFarlane kicked a goal last week and has kicked a goal every game she has played - dropped.

Zimmi still hasn’t been named yet.

With McKee, McFarlane and Blackburn all out, Pritchard is our only player to kick a goal for the season. At round 4. Grim.

Not getting games into Westo is baffling. Not only has she only played 2 games, one of those games she played 50% game time.

From what I understand we are limiting her minutes and games due to her having a soft tissue injury earlier in the year, we've currently in the middle of a 4 games in 16 days stretch so I can understand us being cautious and managing players, especially young ones.

What I don't understand is why McFarlane was dropped, height forward of centre has been a major issue and McFarlane provides that height.
