He's definitely a different bloke now than he was in his early Hawthorn days.

He doesn't strike me as a Malthouse at Carlton type older bloke, he's gotten the lay of the land, really studied abroad looking at successful dynasties like the GSW with another astute student of the game in Steve Kerr, and he really did his due diligence when it came to selecting one of the three clubs.

Would Essendon have had a greater chance if they started their process earlier? Absolutely. But I think the sentiment, the history of the club, the list potential and the challenge would have brought him over the line and Sonja handled this process really well to get him there.

The club can really breathe a sigh of relief for now and relax for a time, and get really stuck into work and 'roll up the sleeves' as Clarko mentioned often in that presser that the on-field success can really begin.
