Alex Condon (Future Cat B Candidate?)

The odds of Condon being drafted into the NBA are slim to none. It's ridiculously difficult to make it, plenty of higher rated Aussies haven't got close to being drafted. Most end up playing overseas(outside of NA) in the hope of a 2 way or even a 10 day contract, but even then that usually just leads to them being quickly cut, or sent to the g league to waste away.

It's all just a guess without more knowledge of his game. It's not necessarily the highest rated basketballers who get an NBA gig. It's a like how you can be a star at State League but not have the AFL attributes, or alternatively you can be just a solid player at state league but have an outstanding attribute that gets you an AFL gig.

Like Jim Jess who came from Avoca reserves. And my brother who was playing in the seniors didn’t get drafted.

It's a really particular skillset that gets a big drafted into the modern NBA. We've seen guys dominate college ball for little/no pro ball (Edey, Timme, etc.). It is a very tough gig.
It's a specific skillset, but it's actually not necessarily one that's tough to demonstrate - It's more about discipline and playing your role as a big man.

Guys like Naz Reid and Daniel Theis are current examples of undrafted, workmanlike big men who just do their job without setting the world on fire.

If Condon wants to make it, he needs to work towards being one of those guys, rather than thinking he'll be the next Jokic or Embiid, but there's still always work in the NBA for a guy who can defend in practice and come in for 10 minutes a game and not get your team slaughtered on the boards, and besides being tall enough and able to get up and down the floor, mostly it's about workrate, hustle and understanding the gameplan.

Honestly, people hoping he's so far from making it that he comes over and plays for us next year are really overlooking that we probably don't want a guy who quits easily and lacks the basic understanding to at least be a good glue guy in his chosen sport.

From a selfish Collingwood perspective, we would want him to come close to the NBA but narrowly fall short, and come here with everything he learned getting super close to making it in the most competitive league in the world.

For sure. That being said, Naz Reid was an All-Freshmen teamer on a 28 win LSU group.

Lateral mobility & PnR defence will be where he will either make it or break it. He doesn't have the skillset to allow himself to be a mediocre or worse defender in space, as of now at least.

It's a very uphill climb.

He has to fail at the basketball first....or get homesick etc. This is a long hule project at the best of times.

We could dream of getting shaq cat b listed. He's here enough and he has a passable aussie accent

Good luck to him, but there's a big distance between draining a couple of 3 pointers in your first game and getting drafted.
Imagine assuming a college player would make to to the NBA off the back of a promising debut game.

Seems we’ve learned nothing despite seeing the same thing ourselves in the AFL. Promising debuts and then a year or two later they’re out of the system is a common theme with pro sports worldwide.

Florida lost to Virginia today (16 turnovers). I tried to look on social media to see any mention on Alex, looks like it wasn't great

Come home Alex!

The chance of making the NBA is far lower than the AFL. You need a season of good college games to be considered. These days, kids are playing NBL or in some Serbian league on top of the highly competitive college system not to mention NBA clubs don't care if you're 19 or 25 - they'll draft if you're good enough.

TLDR: Condon would have to put together an exceptional season to make it.

It's not about one season - He was never going to rocket into NBA first round calculations in his freshman season - He'll almost certainly spend 4 years trying to get to a level where he can get a chance to play himself onto an NBA roster.

He's ages away, if he ends up here. There is no chance he ends up at Collingwood before 2027, I'd say.
