If he gets onto our list I see no reason why he won't have a career as good as Cox...

Way too early to tell though obviously. Hopefully cuts the cord on his NBA dream soon.
He does have the fact he has a footy background advantage over Cox. Wont have to spend years working out how to play. It should just be riding a bike. Just a little re-introduction.

Strange call on a kid who’s literally been on nobody else’s radar to this point. Feels like an article that has been designed to list a bunch of smokys so they can say “I told you so!” if one or two of them actually get drafted.

It’s all about the story ….

… and the story of a potential draftee who grew up in a faraway land wrestling sharks, snakes and crocodiles is a fun story.

Like Parker and Wilson had, he'll need some form of preseason to be physically conditioned for the different sport, and work on game plan scenarios, but not as much in terms of basic skill instruction as big Coxy needed.

Totally. It can take a while to transform from a basketball or cricketer's body into a footballers body as we are starting to see with parker.

Or he might actually be a chance of getting drafted.

If it’s anything like the AFL, it’s more about which player manager is able to tell the most compelling story about their client.

You certainly wouldn’t be getting any recruiters ringing up a journo and saying “Hey, I gotta tell you, we’re super excited about the Ozzie kid playing for the Gators. We think he’s flying underneath the radar and hoping we can pick him up cheap

In the AFL, journos seem to know which club is interested in which kid. Cal Twomey tells us the draft order before the draft. Not sure how he knows - whether through blokes in the recruiting chain, player managers saying - well they've gone and watched Alex 5 times and met him twice, etc ... And no idea if espn journos have contacts or not.

Cal I think just goes to the club with pick 2, whom will have spoken to the manager of the player they want before being told "Richmond are planning on taking him with pick 1" and so on.

ESPN is the only outlet thats mentioned him, so are they right and everyone else wrong or vice versa.
Though this one has him at 59. Which is the last pick in the draft.
One thing to remember about these mock drafts is that NBA teams will take about 10 more international players than ESPN has even heard of, so if a college player is at 59 on their mock, it's almost certainly more like them going undrafted in reality.

A guy like Johni Broome was one of the best players in college basketball this season and is only being talked about as a late first or early-mid second round pick. It's a damn competitive sport. Johnny Furphy last year was a more attractive NBA prospect than Condon in terms of play style, in a weaker draft, and still only went 35th overall.

Look, I'm not even really praying for his failure (I actually care a lot about Australia's future as a national basketball team too), I'm just an NBA fan and I know how hard it is to make it to the NBA.

Justin Edwards, who is now starting for the 76ers, was a 5 star recruit coming out of high school, played at Kentucky, one of the most prestigious college basketball programs, and had a promising freshman season. He went undrafted and had to sign as a free agent. And that's a guy who is good enough to be starting for an NBA team 6 months after that happened. And last year's draft was weak.

NBA 6th man of the year winner Naz Reid was a 5 Star Recruit, played for LSU, could score, shoot the 3, had good season, declared for the draft... Undrafted.

I'm not saying he can't get drafted, but he's definitely not going to get to a point where he's guaranteed to get drafted.

Its clearly very hard, so little spots with so many players aiming for the nba. Not just internationally but in the US alone. Think of all the players on each team in each school, state, city.

It's a really interesting situation. He supposedly only started playing competition basketball at 16. I'm curious about the assumption that it's this year's draft or back to OZ. Wouldn't a third year at college be the go if your preference is NBA? It'll be a tough decision which he'll be making when he decides whether or not to nominate.

If Dekka was an NBA scout, Condon rocks the “late start to elite pathways” box

The older he gets the lower his draft stocks drop. He's already getting minutes and starting, so he's already getting the chance to show what he can do. As he gets older, the perceived potential he has for improvement decreases.

He might improve by 20% next year, but being a year older drops his stock by 20% so he's in the exact same position.

4 year college big men who are just role players tend not to have huge amounts of draft interest. Especially if they can't touch the top of the backboard when they jump.

Where he might be a bit different is the Dekka theory of limited access to elite pathways. Most college players have been playing at a high standard for their age level for many years and thus had all the coaching that goes with that - he's only been playing competitive basketball since 16. So possible potential for a steeper improvement arc than standard, which could push him from not getting drafted this year to being a shot next year. Plus he might be able to stack on some size - to me he doesn't look NBA draftable yet, as he's not projecting as being an outstanding athlete or a physical brute.

Are the NBA draft watchers referring to him as a basketballer with a football background?
