Do you have a link for that claim?

I recall that Walz mobilised NG on the request of the Mayor but that was when the rioters were burning business and people were getting injured. Not sure that anyone would take issue with that.

Walz has done more for public education and children in 2023 than anyone before him.

This $12 billion proposal would lower the cost of child care for middle-class families, reduce child poverty by expanding tax credits for families who need help the most, and make the largest investment in public education in state history.

I think that the article is petulant dross.

It's true that Tim Walz isn't the harbinger of revolution, and maybe his advocacy of 'corporate interests' as a way to increase the wealth and wellbeing of his constituents in Minnesota will see him strung upside-down on the day of reckoning, but none of this means that he isn't progressive.

The tenor of his politics is that power needs to represent ordinary people, not least the workers. Walz believes that governments have a role to play in improving the market, in correcting its defects, and he has a good record of attracting votes on the basis of this belief.

Socialists of every hue must know that the US is an extraordinarily difficult market for such ideas. There is a lot of money and media marshalled against them, not to mention the rancid ideology of individualism that has stained the American fabric for well over a century.

Walz and Sanders et al are not the bearers of false consciousness. They're decent and practical people who live in an extremely sick society, a society which believes that the sickness is a source of strength.

Give them a break.

One of the great tricks was stealing the word “progressive”.

No way, JB. They do not deserve a break. They are instrumental in ensuring the domination of the two party system in the US, which is driving both the US and the world to a catastrophe.

After the attempted coup by Trump in 2021, Biden and the Democrats refused to prosecute Trump with the full force of the law. Instead, Biden stated openly: that the Democrats wanted above all else a strong Republican party to work with.

Throughout his presidency Biden and the Democrats have repeatedly done deals with the fascists in the Republican party in order to achieve their main policy objectives: spending on weapons and arms for the war in Ukraine and the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

The Democrats in several constituencies are doing everything they can to prevent third parties from getting on the ballot for the presidency. Such is their fear of any independent voice, and their opposition to democracy.

As for Sanders, he is a political coward and perhaps the most treacherous of all. He wound down his own campaign for the nomination in 2016 precisely because both he and the Democrats became terrified that he had unleashed a powerful left wing movement among students and young people that the Democrats would no longer be able to control. Instead, he meekly submitted to the dictates of the Democratic party, wound down his campaign, and handed over the reins to Killary Clinton.

Sanders’ “political revolution” against the “billionaire class” turned out to be a gigantic fraud.

He is a Zionist who backs the genocide in Gaza.

Not long ago, he joined forces with AOC (another so called "socialist""), to demand that Biden remain the Democrats' candidate for this election. Now he is endorsing both Harris and Walz. He is a total snake who changes his position whenever he wishes to accommodate the needs of the right wing Democratic party, and above all else, to avoid rocking the boat, and protect the status quo.

Tim Walz didn't create the two-party system. He works within it, but this doesn't amount to an acceptance of the status quo.

Power can only be obtained and exercised through party structures. That is a reality which cannot be denied or resisted with ideological purity.

I know that it won't mollify you and others, but it encourages me that Walz is part of a strand of Dems who acknowledge that their party walked away and wiped their hands of working people in the 1990s.

Walz himself has seemingly held that view for a long time, whereas others needed the cataclysm of the Don to teach them a valuable lesson.

Sanders is of the same view. Let me say that it seems unfair to call the man a fraud, given that he hasn't had the opportunity to practice what he preaches. As for his stance on Gaza, every comment I've heard from Bernie is highly critical of the genocide, so I'm not sure how he deserves to be branded an apologist.

I'm not going to defend people like Hillary Clinton, because she's part of the mess that people like Walz are looking to clean up.

Watching a very good doco on SBS concerning Trump.
The man is simply untouchable. The amount of Republicans who have stood up to decry him and his views, only to turn around and pledge undying support for him is staggering.
And the amount of extreme racists and white supremacists who became empowered by his inability to condemn their action is a portal to the nest four years in America.
If you are a person of colour, or not born in the USA, you will be targeted by these people, and the President will simply support you because, in his own words, “ these are my people”..
I’ve ordered a B-Double of popcorn, because this is going to be a great show. The destruction of the greatest democracy over the last 2 centuries.
And Trump, soaking up the spotlight as he likes to do, at the centre of it all.

So you are likening the destruction of American democracy to a pop-corn fest?
Shows that you really have no concept of the seriousness of what is at stake.

JB, I will answer this simply by saying that Walz and Harris have absolutely no intention of "cleaning up" Killary's mess, no more than Genocide Joe did.

On the contrary, they aim to continue her policies of war, and mass murder.

I don't believe that I will convince you, so I will let time be the umpire.

I fully understand what is at stake.
The popcorn fest is simply because I have lost all faith in the American people to understand what is coming.
The destruction of the greatest democracy in the last 2 centuries is inevitable due to the Trump revealing their inner racism and white supremacsim.
Will I enjoy it? Only if I can consume the amount of popcorn that I need.
The simple fact is, I am, we all are, unable to influence what the dumb shit Americans are about to do.
May as well sit back and enjoy this moment in history.

You are very complacent. Do you truly believe that the destruction of US democracy will have no impact on Australia??
Your packet of popcorn might be capsized by a serious social earthquake before you even know it.

Who said I didn’t understand the impact, not only on Australia, but the world considering the Trump’s views on NATO?
He has already given Putin the green light to invade whatever countries he wants to in Europe.
As you are so passionate about this, and because of that I’m not sharing my popcorn with you, please tell me how you will watch/react to what is coming?
Are you going to protest in the streets of Melbourne? Maybe go fight in Ukraine to ward off Trump’s best friend?
Or, like me, will you be powerless?
I think the latter. But unlike you, I won’t curl up in a corner and sob, I’ll watch the politics unfurl, step by step, delicious piece of popcorn piece by piece.

I would also call MT a fraud, but that might not go down well.

We are on the same page

Treatment of poor in Calcutta by her was terrible

One of my old uni lecturers was in Calcutta studying her practices and said she was a shameless fame grabber

Hitchens’ bio of her was good

People often project their desire for heroes on the undeserving

If i were "curling up in the corner and sobbing", I would not be posting on social media. I would be...well curling up and sobbing.

Powerlessness is a space that the dominant class wants you to accept.

If you agree that you are powerless, then you won't cause any problems to them.

I don't accept that. Therefore, I do my best to alert anyone who wishes to listen that the state of "powerlessness" is a myth promoted by those who defend the status quo.

There is a way to oppose the current trajectory of capitalist society towards dictatorship, impoverishment of the vast majority, and world war.

It requires the worldwide embrace by the masses (ie. the vast majority of the world's population, the millions of working people who keep the economy running, and whose labour generates the profits on Wall St) - of a new political perspective.

^ NATO is a coalition of imperialist criminals, united in their desire to conquer new markets and raw materials, but at the same time riven by competing interests.

The Democrats see NATO as beneficial to the geostrategic interests of corporate America, because NATO members are currently collaborating with the US in its plans to use the proxy war in Ukraine as a means to overthrow Putin and seize control of the wealth and resources of Russia.

Like a band of pirates, they work together in order to organize the seizure of the treasure. But once the treasure is seized, cutlasses will be drawn.

Trump, on the other hand, does not see NATO in such a positive light. He believes that NATO is draining too many US resources (military and financial) which could be better deployed elsewhere (ie, in creating police state conditions within the US, and preparing for war against China.).

PS: Putin has no intention of "invading Europe" - another lie concocted by the Democrats to justify their escalating intervention into the war.

Are you aware that that site is considered and judged by Media Bias as... .

...we rate the World Socialist Web Site (WSWS) as strongly Left Biased based on promoting anti-capitalist, socialist viewpoints. We also rate them as Mostly Factual in reporting rather than High due to the use of some sources that promote conspiracy theories.

The name kinda gives it away.

Trump is ignorant (also a liar) and has no idea what NATO is all about.

Here are two well written articles from truly independent news sources and both well respected.

Trump has a history of misrepresenting NATO or suggesting that the United States might not honor its commitment to allies. Former national security adviser John Bolton said in a memoir that Trump was close to pulling the U.S. out of NATO in 2018.

Trump spoke that year about NATO as if it were a business going bankrupt until he came along. “I went to NATO. And NATO was essentially going out of business ’cause people weren’t paying and it was going down, down, down,” he said.

He also bemoaned that Americans were “the schmucks that are paying for the whole thing.” U.S. defense spending, while well above 2%, has actually been decreasing for years.

NATO scholar Garret Martin says in any case, U.S. defense needs vastly surpass those of its European allies.

"We're not comparing apples to apples," notes Martin, a lecturer at American University's School of International Service. "The United States is a global military power with global military commitments.

"NATO and the trans-Atlantic geographical area is only a part of what the United States military does.

Trump also includes cost of Military bases like those in Germany where some 35,000 military are based and planes are refueled and housed there. I imagine also the costs related to bases here.
