What's amazing about Dunstall's record aged 25-28 (and I'm surprised you forgot to point it out) is of course that he fractured his scull in 1990 aged 25,

that Dunstall had kicked more goals than Plugger when Dunstall did his knee.

you don't want to get in an injury pissing contest when comparing the two.

Maybe if Lockett had been less selfish, and more committed to tackling and defensive pressure, he would have played in more winning seasons.

or was from the country town of Frankston, rather than Ballarat

Apologies to everyone for this thread getting derailed but anyway...

agreed, neither were ever a chance this year.

So now Dunstall is a better full forward than Lockett despite kicking less goals because he was less selfish and provided greater defensive pressure, both of which are subjective and can't be measured like goals can. The same as Chewy's argument that Rioli is a better small forward than Milne because he is less selfish and provides greater defensive pressure.

Next Hawthorn supporters will be trying to argue that Schoenmakers is a better defender than Fisher or Dempster because he's less selfish and provides greater defensive pressure.

Just laughable.

Fractured scull and knee were both slightly more serious than anything that happened to Plugger.

Plugger could have played more games aged 28 if he hadn't said hello to Peter Caven as well. I think Peter Caven is the most serious injury Plugger was involved in.

You can actually measure a lot of things these days. If they were both current day players we would have their stats on goal assists. Unfortunately we can't get an exact number of them, but there's no question Dunstall had far more of those than Lockett.

Amazing when comparing Dunstall and Lockett, it's all about goal averages and total goals kicked - nothing else matters

But when we compare Hudson and Coleman, total goals kicked and averages go out the window and we are supposed to say Coleman is the best because he was more "spectacular". Nothing that would actually assist his team in winning

Heck, John Coleman even got exemption into the Team of the Century as he hadn't met the criteria

The leading goalkicker really should be awarded the Hudson Medal.

Even if you take out the games he was suspended for, Lockett missed 87 games to Dunstall's 58, and that's not counting the two years during which he was retired.

1988 - broken ankle, missed last 11 games at 22yo
1989 - groin, missed last 7 games at 23
1990 - knee, missed 8 games mid-season at 24
1991 - back, missed first 6 games at 25
1993 - back, missed last 7 games at 27

Next you will be telling us the AFL and the umpires cost St Kilda a certain top 4 spot. :thumbsu:

Oh well. Look at it this way. With a non-Victorian winning the Rising Star and non-Victorians being overly represented in the AA team this may finally shut up the bleating of non-Victorians about Victorian bias.

Next you will be telling us the AFL and the umpires cost St Kilda a certain top 4 spot. :thumbsu:

Well considering the umpires cost us at least 3 games this year, including our game against Collingwood who finished 4th, that wouldn't be far from the truth.

Not saying Lockett didn't miss more games than Dunstall. Simply that Dunstall's two injuries had a bigger impact on his goalkicking.

...4 games missed

wouldn't have got in ahead of Milney or Cox though

As we are talking about the players averages, of course it's not the number of games he missed with the fractured scull that's relevant, it's the impact on him when he returned to play later in the season

Hey guys, no one gives a shit about your fight over Lockett vs Dunstall. If you want to continue this decades old pointless argument, go make a thread about it.

I agree wholeheartedly. Tried to stop it earlier, but they keep on going...

FB Birchall Richards Glass
HB Deledio McPharlin Waters
C Kennedy Ablett(c) Dangerfield
HF Beams Pavlich Swan
FF Milne Hawkins Franklin
Fol Cox Watson(vc) Cotchin
Int Jacobs Thompson Pendlebury Boyd
Excellent work.... 19/22

Out: Jacobs, Pavlich, Boyd
In: Naitanui, Rioli, Dempster

Kind of makes you wonder what all the fuss is about when people on here are picking near identical teams with nobody batting an eyelid or calling them f-wits

Another decent effort from Aug 30th

FB: Josh Gibson - Darren Glass - Beau Waters

If the AA team is such a disgrace, then how come people on here were so close?

flipping hell...

5 days before they announce a squad of 40, deanbigfooty goes WHACK! and lands it 3 feet from the pin

Nice shot, mate!

B: Waters Glass Richards
HB: Deledio McPharlin Birchall
C: Swan Cotchin Watson

F: Milne Hawkins Beams
Foll: Cox Ablett(c) Pendlebury
Int: Jacobs Thompson Dangerfield Kennedy
19/22

Out: Jacobs, Pavlich, Jetta
In: Naitanui, Glass(c), Rioli

Sensational effort

I'm beginning to wonder whether Darcy, Jakovich, Healy and Ricciuto are sick of copping shit every year, so on the day of their selection meeting, they log onto Big Footy and read the All Australian thread and plagiarise people's teams from here.

From Sept 1st, 4 days before squad announced...

Okay, I suck. Only 16/22

Gibson - Richards - Birchall
Deledio - McPharlin - Jack
Cotchin - Mitchell - Thompson
Beams - Hawkins - Dangerfield
Rioli - Franklin - Pavlich

Jacobs - Watson - Ablett

Natanui - J Selwood - Kennedy - Pendlebury
Out: Gibson, Jack, Mitchell, Selwood, Pavlich, Jacobs
In: Glass(c), Dempster, Waters, Swan, Milne, Cox

I'm stubborn. I refuse to concede my selections were inferior to the guys they finally settled on. Waters was bloody good. I'm not sure why I left him out, but the others... Meh.

My team > their team

Mitchell, Gibson, Jacobs, Jack, Selwood and Pavlich were all unlucky omissions (in order)
Pavlich & Selwood were 50/50. The others should've definitely been in there.

When Vlad and Adrian Anderson are removed from the panel and the panel is rejuvinated by replacing ex players who were in the Boer wars, I'll take some notice of it. Until then- Pffft!

I think Demetriou's just the non-voting Chairman, i.e. a figurehead.

Great job, Bollox

Another nearest the pin special, 4 days out from squad announcement

18/22

Out: Riewoldt, Pavlich, Mitchell, Jacobs
In: Hawkins, Dempster, Rioli, Natanui

You had Hawkins listed as emergency, but the Coleman / Tiger bias kicked in
Nearly had NicNat also.
