I thought someone may have noted it by now in this thread, but it seems that the AA 1st ruck didn't even finish in the top 10 of his own clubs B&F.

What an increasingly odd selection that was.

Waters didn't finish in our top 10 either but made the AA team. Our B&F has some major flaws, Daniel Kerr was runner up in the Brownlow in 2005 but finished 9th (behind 5 other midfielders).

Although Naita finished the highest of the contending ruckmen in the AFLCA MVP, the Brownlow and the Champion Data rankings, so I'm happy to defer to the judgement of the coaches, umpires, AA panel experts and unbiased statistics on this one.

I also noticed Rioli wasn't even the highest finishing small forward at Hawthorn Echols. Strange that. ;)

With 4 games remaining in the home & away season, Rioli was well in front of Breust and sitting in 3rd place in the Hawks' B&F. He injured his shoulder in 2nd quarter of the Round 20 game vs Port, missed the next 2 games and came on as sub in the final game vs West Coast, where he kicked a goal and had 11 possessions in just over a quarter.

Breust was one of Hawthorn's better players during the finals and leap-frogged a couple of players (including Cyril) in the B&F voting during September. These games don't count towards the All Australian team.

Cyril Rioli also contends with the opposition's tagger or best small defender in every game. The opposition scrutiny towards him and Breust is a lot different. It will be a challenge for Breust to maintain this good form now that everyone knows who he is.

I see what you did there!

Thing is though, of all the "All Australian" teams getting about in the media and on the footy shows, Rioli was in 98% of those sides. I'm guesing NicNat may have been in a couple of sides, perhaps on the bench, but I doubt anyone had him as 1st ruck ahead of Jacobs or Cox.
