Interesting article given the infatuation of the AFL with young players

You would think that a billion dollar organisation like the AFL would be onto this sort of thing.

Fitness liason officers and the like.

Thanks Vlad.:thumbsu:

Ash Hansen was apparently spotted by a few people getting a caffeine fix in Freo with Ross and Suma this morning.

Hmmm....

You betta be trollin!!

Fremantle have offered West Coast premiership forward Ashley Hansen a position as full-time development coach for next season.

Hansen, 28, will effectively replace the departed Jason McCartney if he accepts the role.

The 2006 premiership player, who tallied 78 matches in seven seasons at West Coast, has been in discussions with Dockers officials for the past week.

He met Fremantle coach Ross Lyon and assistant Peter Sumich yesterday and is understood to be weighing up whether to accept the attractive proposition.

It was the final exercise, though, which probably gave the greatest insight into Lyon's approach.

The pea in his whistle worked as hard as any of the players in a drill where two players worked to clear the ball from an "opposition" player.

Renowned as one of the best strategists for close-in AFL combat, you could sense that this was Lyon's preferred domain.

Six times he whistled a stop as he lectured the 10 players on how he wanted them to approach the work, what to do and what not to do.

And, six times, they listened. You could have heard a pin drop at Fremantle Oval as Lyon's instructions were issued - and received.
You'd expect that the sound of Lyon's whistle will become a permanent feature around the oval over the pre-season.

I would have expected the first training session of the pre-season to just be a bit of a run-through, but it sounds like Ross has started teaching some of the skills required to implement his gameplan from day 1.

I like it a lot.:thumbsu:

on ash hansen, my immediate thoughts were WTF!!!!

but having had a couple of hours to digest... he is certainly a decent bloke, and not a typical west coast arrogant flog. He also articulates himself well, and given he had almost zero ability he would be a good player for the kids to learn the value of hard work off of... not so sure this is a horrible appointment

in bond we trust

Hansen was limited by his mobility at the highest level but to say he had no talent is not true. He dominated for a while as a CHF, strong mark on the lead and a smart player too.

Lyon: "Suma, which player do you reckon would make a good coach that you've seen the last ten years at the eagles"
Suma:" Bluey Hansen"
Lyon: " Lets get him in for a coffee"
Suma: "OK"

Simple communication, Simple instructions, simple outcome....it's simpler on everyone.

Re: Lyon raising the bar for pre-season

I'm curious whether our players will still have as much 'license to roam' as last season - especially Fyfe who just popped up everywhere

Hopefully so

Wasn't that one of our issues last year? I'd say that the vast majority of the players will have their roles clearly defined.

It was - but some players strengths are in a floating role. As long as it doesn't compromise the overall structure, anyhow

Regarding the possible Ash Hansen apointment, he has no experience in the role. We need player developers who are formal AFL superstars who can show our players what is required to perform like a champion. Some one like (I hate to say it) Ben Cousins or Simon Black when he retires.
