Especially as most of us had this wierd inkling he would be as bad a pm as he is a person

Mind you some, such as bolt, maintaining he is really a nice guy
Bolt is finally coming round, it's taken him five years, but seeing as he's an Arts drop out you have to assume he's pretty slow learner.

Anyway, it's an interesting dilemma that the Coalition find themselves in right now.

The right faction absolutely loathe Turnbull,

But the Australian public don't like the right, now that they've seen the real aim is to dismantle Medicare, social security, higher education and erode pay and conditions for low-paid workers. All the sorts of things we've become accustomed to since Whitlam. I don't see the right as being any more than a small minority viewpoint in Australia.

Howard at least had the political instinct for a long time to keep the extremes of it being implemented too widely, that is until they came up with Workchoices, which was his government's death-knell. Abbott has got to that stage after about half a term.

Swing voters don't give a shit about treating refugees decently, that's well established by now.

Hopefully Turnbull kicks Kevin Andrews to the backbench.

They are probably too worried about becoming one themselves if we sell too much of Australia.

Hewson likes to present himself as a bleeding heart moderate now but he was as hard right as they come, runours were he would mobilise the armed forces in a war on unions immediately after the election.

Hows new zealand going these days professor ?

QFT.

He does speak common sense now but you're right he was completely different back then, he would've wound back all the gains of the Hawke years and been an earlier version of today's government. I wonder why he changed? or has the party moved further to the right, ie. not so much economically but rather socially?

If there is a change to the leadership, then the current deputy PM in Truss is the way to go.

No harm in having the National Party leader in the Coalition as PM, using John "BlackJack" McEwen as the example. Truss isn't really political posion and seems genuine, like previous Nationals leaders before him.

Liberals will never let the junior party have the Prime Minister. It would be an embarrassment for them and the Coalition. (Let alone Truss looks old enough to be in a nursing home.)

McEwen was Prime Minister for 22 days because Harold Holt w̶a̶s̶ ̶k̶i̶d̶n̶a̶p̶p̶e̶d̶ ̶b̶y̶ ̶a̶ ̶C̶h̶i̶n̶e̶s̶e̶ ̶s̶u̶b̶m̶a̶r̶i̶n̶e̶ drowned.

I think the refugees issue is toxic to both parties. The majority dont want them landing here, either because they are 'cheating' the system ( whatever it is) or the trip is killing many of them & supports corruption in Indonesia. I doubt many are pleased with the way they are treated in Manus Island or the threat to send them to Cambodia to rot.

Neither party will push the treatment issue too far. So far the LNP have dined out on 'stopping' the boats. But that will fade. The ALP didnt 'stop' the boats, so they will not really want to say too much. IMO

I'm not sure if we can be certain of that, in that there is a big difference between treating refugees poorly and treating them like animals.

This government (and Rudd) took refugee policy to an unprecedented level. Australians might want a tough asylum seeker policy but I'd hope they don't want to see riots, hunger strikes, suicide attempts, settlement in Cambodia, turn backs to Sri Lanka and indefinite detention. Imo the ALP could adopt a not so quite punitive stance to the LNP and if refugee problems continue to the next election it might work in their favor. Voters are weary of this as an election issue but if it continues to be a problem in spite of harsh LNP policy there should be a backlash imo.

They need to just dump the dickhead and get Turnbull in. It's their only hope.

I want Abbott to fight off the execution for weeks and months so the political damage is most strong.

But I think he's out the door Tuesday week.

How would you rate Tony Abbott's 'State of the Union'-type speech at the National Press Club in Canberra today?

Kid in a sandpit sooking cause Charlie bit his finger....Charlie being his toothless, stuffed fluffy Iguana and making sure inanimate Charlie does not make him go to bed early because that wouldn't be fair.

Are you suggesting that Tone goes for a long swim?

So hows stopping the boats improved everyones lives ? They seem as dissatisfied as others
Well, it's eased the congestion on the M4 for a start.

Would be a very interesting meeting in the Liberals party room next Tuesday. When does the next opinion polls come out?

This chronically underestimated politician is on the verge.

The verge strip, where all rubbish is left....

Of course they do. Problem is said dickhead looks set to make it messy enough that it damages the party. If he was perceptive at all he would see that while a change of leader isn't ideal, if done in a seemingly amicable way (he admits he is out of touch with policy and performance and resigns politics then a new leader is quickly selected and rallied behind) they are still separating themselves from the mess of Labor 09-13.
