I have mixed feelings about this. I definitely believe that the anti-vaccination movement is completely insane and hugely destructive, but I can't help but feel that many people who are sitting on the fence, who I think are arguably the most in danger (let's face it, we will never convince the committed anti-vaxxers to vaccinate), are on the fence because of 'liberty' type reasons. This might be the straw that tips them over, but the wrong way.

Ah well, I guess you could argue they still have choice - vaccinate or don't get welfare.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. It could have some intended consequences, but if more people vaccinate, then I guess it's a 'net' win.

I want to see less people vaccinate so as to make a statement to the government to stop trying to control people's lives. Blackmail has never been an acceptable tactic when trying to convince people that something is of benefit to them.

Yeah, nothing sticks it to the government than placing more lives at risk.

I really hope you dont have to see children die from avoidable diseases. Also the massive medical, social & economic costs associated with things like Polio if they were allowed to spread back into the community again.

Just stick to you stupidity over taxes, at least people wont die if you get your way.

Idiotic flogger.

How much of an effect will this have? Aren't a lot of people that refuse to vaccinate their children actually quite wealthy and therefore don't receive these benefits?

There are stats on everything..,including religious excuse. It cant achieve 100%, but hopefully an increased social stigma can/will develop for those that still hold out. Personally i;d make religious excuses exempt as well, but i have the luxury of not caring what others think.

The alternative to catch every living soul would be the blanket ban on unvacc kids going to kindergarten/day care or school....but its a little tyrannical for a democracy with liberals currently at the helm. It may happen one day if the %'s dont change considerably after this move.

Reckon its a good compromise...strong but no jack boots. Leaves the decision with the parents, but it becomes a virtual necessity for so many. Future govts can always revisit/toughen it up if the electorate is demanding increased action down the track.

Morrisons work.

.

Pretty sure this is the case in some states in the US: no vaccine, no school. Makes total sense to me.

I don't see it as tyrannical. We accept plenty of limits to our freedoms (e.g. You can't carry a gun onto a plane, you can't drive drunk) that would place others at risk.

This is no different. People still have the freedom not to vaccinate their children. They just then forego the benefits of being members of society.

Actually its the opposite. The wealthy and the educated are more likely to vaccinate their children because they can actually read and don't believe hysterical types who have been making all these ridiculous claims about various diseases that it is supposed to cause. It is general middle class welfare families who don't, but they also fail to realise that the diesel vehicle they bought thinking it was clean than petrol is actually doing far more harm than passive smoking will to their children.

Was listening to the radio late last night and this woman came on stating that the vaccinations had mercury in them and they were doing more harm than good. She also came up with some other amazing things and proclaimed them as facts.
Apparently prior to 2000 the vaccine did in fact contain traces but no more than you would find in a can of tuna. She wouldn't be dissuaded.
So much mis-information out there.

As others have said elsewhere, we force people to get a licence for some of the most trivial things in this country, but when it comes to bringing a child into the world and having to raise them you don't. Some people just aren't fit to be parents.

Because it would be quite simply impossible, from so many aspects, to enforce, where as the licences for the trivial things aren't. What happens when an early stage pregnant woman fails the licence test?

As long as he's consistent.

Leave his daughters out of this , they are not in a public position and don't deserve to be dragged into this. Show a bit of respect to these people.
Err, if he hadn't dragged them around the campaign trail with him, I wouldn't know what they looked like.
Abbott thrust them into the limelight when it suited him.

I don't think anyone has said anything specifically about the opinion's of his daughters.
I think they are pointing out that his stance would seem at odds to what his Government is implementing.

Every politician brings out the family at election time, why is it i never see muck thrown at rudds, keatings or hawkes. No one ever commented on them in the forum, whys is Abbott's children always being dragged into it, they haven't signed up for this .

But he always go the low road when it comes to ABBOTT but when someone says anything about the greens etc, we get called out on it. I cant tolerate double standards.

Who does?
And how is this the low road? It's about his stance vs the new vac policy his Gov is running with.

And seriously, you can't tolerate double standards?
How many times have you called Keating a homosexual?

There were rumors floating about which i never believed anyway, i have always admired Keating and his colorful turn of phrase and going for his opponents jugular. Someone at his age jumping on a trampoline cant be that bad.

Agreed. If you want government welfare for your family, come to the party with vaccination.

Why don't we extend the logic further then ie if you want welfare then you have the following obligations / restrictions ....

Work for the dole, food vouchers etc.

End public health for smokers and the obese etc etc.

I think you are on to something:thumbsu::thumbsu:
