Amongst fellow Brownlow recipients where does Jimmy Bartel stand?

I think Mitchell is a player who has never received the respect his career deserved. Five time Hawthorn Best and Fairest and finished his career second behind Gary Ablett for all time Brownlow votes - that doesn't happen when you are an average player. If I recall he finished top 5 on more than one occasion.
Totally agree. In the last 10 years I'd actually take Mitchell in my midfield ahead of anyone not named Gary Ablett Jnr.

One of the best wet weather footballers of all time probably.

Brownlow Medal, norm Smith, 3 premierships, +300 games and All Australian. Enough said, champion.

You can’t really compare him to VFL Brownlow winners as that was a weaker competition but compared to medal winners from 1990 onwards, he deserves to be there.
I'll give you the wet part. If I ever had to pick a player to play in the rain he's the first guy I think of. Same if my team had to be entirely out of guys who liked wearing the sleeves.

Anybody who shills for gambling companies gave up their legacy as far as I'm concerned. I hope the pile of cash was worth it Jimmy.

(and he was actually my favourite Geelong player from their recent flag era. He was an absolute gun)

His best footy was probably from 26/27 to 32/33 which is an odd trajectory for a modern day footballer. His retrospective Brownlow came at 30, while Bartel's was at 24, Judd 21 and 27, Cooney 23 etc. He was always slow and didn't kick goals from 60 etc. but I do think he's been underrated because he never really 'broke out'. Judd debuted for us and went from 'shit this kid can play' to 'is he GOAT?' in a couple of seasons, then he faded a bit as he slowed down and Ablett took over, then in recent years Fyfe, Dangerfield and now Martin have had #1 years. Mitchell was consistently very good for probably 2006-2016 without ever being the #1. His best was never the best, but he played at or near his best for a very long period.

As far as Bartel goes he was a great player but outside a 3-4 year period when Geelong were at their peak he wasn't a top player in the AFL. Two AAs and a Brownlow for his great 2007 season are well deserved, but I'm not surprised his 2007 Brownlow tally of 29 is 16 votes higher than his next best season.

I would have
  1. Ablett
  2. Judd
  3. Mitchell
  4. Swan
  5. Hodge
  6. Bartel
  7. Johnson
  8. Dal Santo
  9. Ball
  10. Kelly or Montagna or Power or Medhurst (f**k it was good draft)
1. Hodge
2. Mitchell
3. Ablett
4. Judd
5. Bartel
6. Swan
7. Johnson
8. Lake
9. Kelly
10. Ball
11. Dal Santo
12. Hale
13. Montagna
14. Roberts Thomson
15. Waite
16. Reilly
17. C Brown
18. Welsh
19. Maguire
20. Ladson

I think Judd definitely tailed off at Carlton, not to the point where it was obvious to impact his influence, but at WC he was electric. Injuries cruelled him a bit. I think I'd have Mitchell over him just because he was so consistent for so long. Better skills? No. Ability to impact a game? As good as Judd but in a different way. Longevity and consistency? Yes.

Your knees inevitably give way after carrying a club like Carlton on your shoulders!

Question is, if you swapped Mitchell with Judd, does Hawthorn still win 4 flags?

Judd was awesome at WC and how that group of players only won one flag is a massive underachievement.

If Judd could kick like Mitchell he would of been the best player in the games history. He wasn't close to Mitchell's skill level.

Put it this way, if I was to redo the 01 draft I'd have Mitchell at 2, that's how good he was.

So still Hodge at 1 ;):D

Can anyone name a Brownlow medalist in the modern era with a better defensive skill set than Bartel?

The reason Bartel got the job on Hayes in that GF is because he is the one capable of doing it.

He was pretty impressive in that regard Bartel. Priddis & Mitchell could be pretty defensive as well.

Hodge is Hodge, good at everything and I'd say a perfect footballer. Both the 08 & 14 GF were amazing displays. Hawks went in not as favourites, and won due to the influence of him.
