A thread to debate Australia's best (male) player, Andrew Bogut, and his season in the best league in the world. He's off to a hot start to the year, averaging 15.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, 1.8 assists and 2 turnovers per game.

Bogut currently has the best Defensive Rating (Points allowed per 100 possessions) of any player in the league. Only Ben Wallace (DR of 87 in 2003-04) and Tim Duncan (DR of 89 in 2003-04) have had as-good-as better Defensive Ratings in recent years than Bogut's current DR of 89. As well as that, Bogut's Offensive Rating (Points produced per 100 possessions) and PER (Player Efficiency Rating) are at career-high levels right now as well, so he's definitely tapped into a rich vein of form early in the season.
If Bogut keeps this up, he'd be a top contender for Defensive Player of the Year honours. And by extension, if the Bucks keep up their great defense as a team (they have the best team Defensive Rating in the league right now, even better than Boston), they should easily make the playoffs this season.
TBH Bogut winning defensive player of the year is as likely as an Collingwood premiership in 2010
No one wants to live in Milwaukee. Same can be said about Cleveland and Toronto. Boring, uninteresting cities with stagnant weather.Don't know if this the right thread to post it in but I was wondering how the Bucks are looking as a free agent destination next year. With an attractive combo Jennings and Bogut to build around and a good defensive minded coach in Scott Skiles are they a possibility to land a second tier free agent like Ginobili, Joe Jonhson or Boozer? I'm assuming of course that they can trade Redd for expirings this year.
Well if he keeps this up (statistically being the most effective individual defender in the league), then he'd have to be right up there in contention for that award. Obviously the big question mark is 'if', but time will tell.
EDIT: Factoring in today's game, Bogut's Defensive Rating has dropped to 94.8, good for 5th in the league. The current top 10 (as of 15/11/2009) is:
Defensive Rating (Points allowed per 100 possessions)
- Joel Pryzbilla - 91.4
- Greg Oden - 91.5
- Kevin Garnett - 94.4
- Erick Dampier - 94.5
- Andrew Bogut - 94.8
- Dirk Nowitzki - 95.2
- Gerald Wallace - 95.4
- Thabo Sefolosha - 95.4
- Kendrick Perkins - 95.6
- Rajon Rondo - 95.7
Interesting, I didn't know Nowitzki could defend.
I certainly wouldn't have thought they'd be at the same level defensively.
Nowitzki is certainly not a bad defender. He's a pretty good team defender and ok man defender.Even though he's currently having a career-best defensive year, he's never actually been that bad a defender. His career Defensive Rating is 103, which is the same as Manute Bol, LeBron James, Tracy McGrady and Michael Jordan. An odd mix of players I know, and I certainly wouldn't have thought they'd be at the same level defensively without looking at the stats myself on Basketball Reference.
His rep as a bad defender basically comes from antiquated racial stereotypes.
