A thread to debate Australia's best (male) player, Andrew Bogut, and his season in the best league in the world. He's off to a hot start to the year, averaging 15.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, 1.8 assists and 2 turnovers per game.

He's putting up the production I and I think most people envisioned him having when he entered the league - being a solid number 2/3 option on offense whilst chiming in with 10 or so boards and a pair of blocks, I'm thinking around this 16-10-2-2 is where his numbers will stay for the next 5 years or so, great player who will always go under appreciated because of all the hate he gets for being chosen over chris paul and deron williams

I think Bogut and the Bucks are off to a flyer because Redd is not playing. Who needs Redd when the rest of the team clicks so well.

Watch what happens when he comes back. Bogut won't see the ball because Redd will throw up a thousand shots a game....

I hope I'm wrong and Redd plays a team orientated game. If I recall rightly, Redd spat the dummy because the team orientated their offence through Bogut...

Lets face it though, most NBA players are selfish, because it is about the stats.

Don't know if this the right thread to post it in but I was wondering how the Bucks are looking as a free agent destination next year. With an attractive combo Jennings and Bogut to build around and a good defensive minded coach in Scott Skiles are they a possibility to land a second tier free agent like Ginobili, Joe Jonhson or Boozer? I'm assuming of course that they can trade Redd for expirings this year.

I watched the match on Ilp (worth the money fwiw), the pick and roll of Jennings and Bogut at the moment is fantastic to watch.

You can see Bogut's IQ is very high and he knows exactly where to get into position. Jennings is flat out mad with that outside/inside drive.

All the squibs in the Realgm forum were crapping their dacks before the season started, ready to tank and now they are tugging themselves.

RealGM is funny to read at the moment. The Bucks fans are jizzing themselves over Jennings and giving props where it's due to Bogut. It's a completely different forum to what it has been the last however many years Bogut has been with the team.

Bogut currently has the best Defensive Rating (Points allowed per 100 possessions) of any player in the league. Only Ben Wallace (DR of 87 in 2003-04) and Tim Duncan (DR of 89 in 2003-04) have had as-good-as better Defensive Ratings in recent years than Bogut's current DR of 89. As well as that, Bogut's Offensive Rating (Points produced per 100 possessions) and PER (Player Efficiency Rating) are at career-high levels right now as well, so he's definitely tapped into a rich vein of form early in the season.

If Bogut keeps this up, he'd be a top contender for Defensive Player of the Year honours. And by extension, if the Bucks keep up their great defense as a team (they have the best team Defensive Rating in the league right now, even better than Boston), they should easily make the playoffs this season.

TBH Bogut winning defensive player of the year is as likely as an Collingwood premiership in 2010

Well if he keeps this up (statistically being the most effective individual defender in the league), then he'd have to be right up there in contention for that award. Obviously the big question mark is 'if', but time will tell.

EDIT: Factoring in today's game, Bogut's Defensive Rating has dropped to 94.8, good for 5th in the league. The current top 10 (as of 15/11/2009) is:

Defensive Rating (Points allowed per 100 possessions)
  1. Joel Pryzbilla - 91.4
  2. Greg Oden - 91.5
  3. Kevin Garnett - 94.4
  4. Erick Dampier - 94.5
  5. Andrew Bogut - 94.8
  6. Dirk Nowitzki - 95.2
  7. Gerald Wallace - 95.4
  8. Thabo Sefolosha - 95.4
  9. Kendrick Perkins - 95.6
  10. Rajon Rondo - 95.7

Just on Bogut, he bought 100 Season Tickets in the lower section (good seats) for the Bucks. He's given them away to people who otherwise would never be able to afford these seats and who will make a load of noise and attend as many games as humanly possible.

The first tryout only got 30 people (it wasn't that well advertised so only the Bucks die-hards turned up), but from what I can gather the tickets are in extremely high demand now the Bucks are off to a very hot start.

Apparently it has changed the atmosphere in the Bradley Centre incredibly and the Bucks fans on RealGM love him for it.

Considering the size of Milwaukee he shouldn't have to give away tickets like that to guarantee a half decent atmosphere but good on him for doing so.

Although I guess in terms of fan support compared to city size, Charlotte and Memphis would be considered more embarrassing.

No one wants to live in Milwaukee. Same can be said about Cleveland and Toronto. Boring, uninteresting cities with stagnant weather.

Why goto Milwaukee, when places like NY and Miami are offering you the same money

Interesting, I didn't know Nowitzki could defend.

Interesting, I didn't know Nowitzki could defend.

Even though he's currently having a career-best defensive year, he's never actually been that bad a defender. His career Defensive Rating is 103, which is the same as Manute Bol, LeBron James, Tracy McGrady and Michael Jordan. An odd mix of players I know, and I certainly wouldn't have thought they'd be at the same level defensively without looking at the stats myself on Basketball Reference.

They're not. The stat is only useful for comparing players on the same team, not between teams.

It's like saying Farren Ray is a better defensive player than Heath Shaw...his "points per opposition possession" would be lower than Shaw's. It's missing the point though, since your "defensive rating" is completely reliant on your team-mates and your style of play.

To hammer home my point; Mike Bibby has a better DRTG over his career than Joe Dumars. ;)

Nowitzki is certainly not a bad defender. He's a pretty good team defender and ok man defender.

His rep as a bad defender basically comes from antiquated racial stereotypes.

Have the Bucks fans a scare today a well. He went off in the fourth and didn't return. It looked like he'd rolled his ankle but it turned out he'd had a clash of shins and went off with a 'shin contusion'. He'll be fine for the next game.
