Disagree, if he is fit play him...end of story

Have you seen Max in the flesh? His legs are like toothpicks. He now has a strong upper body through 3-4 years natural development but his legs are a mile behind. I don't believe that we will make a decision on him for 2011 based upon 3 or 4 games at the end of this year where he might play 10 mins a quarter. We have made a long term committment to him since he was drafted so in my opinion it does not make sense to play him because he is fit for 3 or 4 games and potentially jeopardise his 2011. He has just had another minor operation which means again there is a period where he won't be able to do train. There is no doubt in my mind if he has another 6 months to strengthen his legs before he plays games then he will be better prepared and has a better chance of resuming his career.

A fair argument, but I don't know if strong leg muscle development in thighs and calves is any factor in susceptibility to knee injuries.

I've always thought there is no connection in cruciate injuries because it is a very specific, lateral force which causes them, and there is no muscular protection in that area.

I'd be happy to hear from any medicos/physios here on this...

hi mate,

in february this year, i tore my left ACL, meniscus, medial ligament and strained my PCL in one (horrific!) indoor soccer injury....i had a full reco in march (LARS) and it has responded fantastically well so far...

but the advice from my surgeon (melbourne orthopedic group) and physio is that during the first 8-10 months after a reco, if you push it too hard then the 'good' knee is at danger of a similar injury because the other leg compensates for the lack of strength/muscle in the reconstructed knee. after the injury, seriously, the body strips away a lot of muscle and tone in the quads/hammy/calf of the injured leg. in a nutshell, your leg becomes a toothpick!

and only with a serious and consistent conditioning/rehab program can you put that muscle and strength back on within a 6-12 month timeframe depending on circumstances. so based on what ive been informed and am experiencing, your body 'decides' when the knee is a strong enough condition to then develop back the muscle conditioning in your quads/calf/hammys etc...so it is critical to have this strength back in

and bailey didnt do the LARS surgery, so the first 3 months or so would've been spent just trying to grow and condition the patella/hammy graft in his knee...i wish him all the best in his recovery and hopefully he is able to avail upon the potential he has already shown us in his handful of games to date

cheers

You stated his career was over.

You were wrong.

Galon, I think if you looked at it honestly you went a bit over the top. He was right about the setback and expressed an opinion which may or may not be correct. Everyone has done that (even me - and everyone doesnt have their posts deleted.

It is sad that you were a bit defensive as he did have the scoop on the story.

Chrissie90, if we are to let anyone log on to the board, post that they heard from someone that a players career is over and just let it run from there without questioning or confirming it, this place will be a joke in no time flat.

As it was, we made contact with the club that night, and it was confirmed to us that the initial 'career is finished' line of the post was untrue.
Due to the sensitivity of speculating on a players demise, especially one so endeared to the supporters, the thread was locked and deleted.

We'll continue to stand by that principle.

If you have any further queries about the modding of the board give any one of us a PM.

I heard Hodgey say he would be back Round 20/21 a couple of weeks ago. Any more recent updates on young Max?
Max has been spotted at training, kicking on both feet.

Not sure what the plan is with him at the moment to be honest, but at least he's out on the track and getting back into things.

Thats good news, I just hope he can be play a couple at Box Hill and be 100% for pre-season training. 2011 for him.

Renouf/Skipper/Taylor to take us through the rest of the year.
