Anti-Franklin umpiring taken to a new level

Re: Franklin & Fevola - why do the umpires hate them?

I thought franklin got a good run from umpires. My understanding of the rule is if you run off your line when taking a kick it is play on. Buddy runs of his line all the time do they call play on. I think he gets a good run so i wouldnt be complaining.

I like you death, can see other forwards cop the same crap as Buddy.

You get used to it, what can you do. And its fustrating.

Invade the pitch?

Just goes to show, there are no true defenders of the game anymore IMO. More like a guy who is a defender but with a stack of rules on his side to interfere with the forward.

The thing I like the players are copying from Soccer is the goals, but the diving needs to be heavily fined

Re: Franklin & Fevola - why do the umpires hate them?

fev got screwed today, I agree 100%. they were there and not paid several times.
He didn`t get a free at all today, which I find amazing.

Okay, the rule says "run in a straight line" but Geischen has already clarified this by saying "a player's natural arc is taken into consideration, and so long as it is his normal kicking action, it is okay." Buddy has already been cleared by the umpires, and I'm sick of seeing this little bit of mis-information spread around (especially by people who should know better - Tim Lane I'm looking at you).

You are basing your 'Franklin got a good run from the umpires' call on the fact that they don't call play on when he has a set shot? Excuse me if I find your opinion laughable.

Correct. This is why I was amazed a few weeks back (mayve vs Port? or the Lions?) when Josh Gibson took a mark, went back over the boundary line, then when he went to kick the ball, the ump called it out of bounds because he had taken 2 steps to the left as he ran in to kick.

Off-topic I know.......but reinforces the total lack of consistency under Goose-chen.

Saw this and was flabbergasted as were the commentry team. What Gibson did was no different from buddy and thats the problem -inconsistency.

Certain players always do seem to cop favourable or unfavourable treatment from the umpires and Buddy is one of those players who doesn't get the rub of the green from them. Having said that, he's not the only key forward who gets bad treatment from them. Fev and Browny don't seem to either and there would have been alot of others who didn't from days gone by.
Key forwards however, do seem to have it easier these days. And whatever treatment he may have got from them on Sunday, they are not the reason why Hawthorn lost yesterday.

Re: Not happy Jan

he may give away some but he also does not get them when they are there to be given to him ! he is crusified by the ump's and don't say he stages as i have not seen him do that since the ump told him not to i think the coaches have told him not to too !

he misses getting free's for in the back and chopping arms all the time it is disgraceful umpiring , if it is there and they see it Pay the free don't not pay it that goes for both sides as the rules apply to both sides i know they can miss the odd one but come one we see them miss more then the odd one ! they wonder why fans bag the umps !

we know the umps did not lose us the game against the tigers , they were horrid for both sides and i do agree with you with what you said about certain players seem to cop it even Hall copped some like that too as well as Fev Brown and Buddy

Re: Franklin & Fevola - why do the umpires hate them?

Both players get absolutely nothing from the umpires and are always pinged for the dodgy frees (ie Franklin for "holding the ball" today whilst clearly out of bounds, Gibson hanging all over Fevola 1,000 times today). Conversely, players like Harvey and Ablett get everything given to them on a platter including all the 50/50 frees. Amazing how the rules are applied differently depending on who the player is.

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT AND ABSOLUTELY WRONG . In the first instance , Franklin does cop a bit more attention from gang ups ( two or three on him) which seems unfair , but is a tribute to his ability , but he does still tend to give away free kicks because of it , especially the hands in the back and the frustration of it sometimes makes him err in judgement ,I feel . He seems to take it and get on with it mostly , which is pleasing , and he is a very attacking player , also pleasing .The ball was out of bounds but unfortunately only Buddy and us knew it . If you remember , Jason Dunstall used to get the same sort of 'unfair' treatment and I used to think that Tony Lockett got more from the umpires , but they were two different styles , really .
As for Ablett and Harvey , I think they create those opportunities by making the ball their solitary target and go hard at it .
As for Fev , well , Fev is Fev , sometimes a hero , sometimes the villian , often the latter and he feigns so much innocence but a terrific footballer on his day .
Buddy could probably learn a lot from watching Matty Richardson , an old cat with a head on his shoulders , he seems to pick up a few kicks .
Don't worry , Buddy is still learning and he should become a legend at Hawthorn for a long time . :)

Appalingly inconsistent umpiring today. To be honest I think Hawthorn supporters have a fair claim to Buddy being unfairly treated by the umps. It was actually pretty amazing, it really just seems like they turn a blind eye when it comes to Buddy. It took Glass an accidental knee in the head after what probably would have been a free anyway (in the back for falling on Franklin), to give up the free kick! Having said that there was a few head high contact incidents with Hawks players which I feel we got stooged on but as far as this thread goes thats neither here nor there.

I wish I understood how the umpires were interpreting the 'wrestling' contests. It looks like Franklin's arms were being held by Glass nearly every time. I don't suppose he helps himself falling over and waving his arms about, but rules are still rules. FFS umpires!

They are quick to pay them against him though. I thought he got a shocking run today... Mauled at most contests and nothing..Nobody can question his temperament though. Most players copping that sort of treatment would be spitting it well and truly. He just keeps on keeping on.

Well , I watched yesterdays game against the Weagles and Buddy was dudded a number of times very unfairly in my opinion . Even Gerald Healey said it and he sux , he's rarely had a good word for Hawthorn .
The big guy just stands out , he is so strong and hard at the ball he seems to attract more attention than his opponents that are literally hanging off him .
Anyway , even with the unfairness of it , he is still the one who is going to have kicked over 100 goals this season , still the one everybody wants in their dream team and one of the most exciting players since Paul Salmon . Forget that Carey #**+er he doesn't deserve credit after his true colours were shown .

i think everyone at every club should email the umpires department with their concerns as it does happen at ever club i am very sure so every game make a list of what you see not paid what time what quarter etc and to be fair if you see something they missed for the other team write that too then email them the question these things happened don't they get free's for them and i am showing what they missed for the other team too so they can't say you are only whinging cause it happened to your team and not the other !

if these things happen are there not free's meant to be given did they ump miss it then also miss the rest of them too ! how is that so

if we all do it maybe they will take they comments from ANY coach more seriously when they say that some of it was not good umpiring etc etc [ by the right channels of course ] or if the media say it was horrid umpiring maybe they will pull those umps aside and say pull your act together that was shocking umpiring it is giving us a bad name we already have a bad name and don't want it to get any worse then it already is !

just a thought
