Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone has a full wrap up of the Williamstown game today? I managed to get down there for for a while but had to leave at half time. It was a typical day at Burbank oval with the wind favouring the one end so the first half wasnt the most attractive..

Thanks :thumbsu:

Williamstown went down by just one point.
Williamstown 9-9-63 to Sandringham 9-10-64.
Goals: Little 2, PANOS 2, JONES 2, WOOD 1, HILL 1, STACK 1.
Best: Davies, WOOD, Cravino, MINSON, Jolley, MARKOVIC.

How did Minson and Hill go in the second half? I thought Minson's first half was ok but nothing great. Wood was lively in the first half also but turned it over a bit.

Was very a very difficult day, very strong wind favored the city end. Wood was far and away our best player. Minson battled hard but won't be back in the Bulldogs team on that performance.

I thought most of the Bulldog guys had some good patches, Stack showed some class at times and Hill took some nice marks, but didn't have a massive game. Jones was quiet. Panos kicked a couple and showed what a great kick for goal he is.

Hooper was doing ok until he went of with what I heard was a serious AC injury. Tutt also went off early and was on crutches, looks like and ankle.

Willi was sloppy with their skills most of the day, but fought it out to the end, they were a bit undermanned in the midfield and lacked a second ruck and had 2 guys injured for most of the second half.

The seconds won easily. Tiller played and was reported late in the game and looks in a bit of trouble....but I was a long way from it. Sam Reid had limited ground time, but moved well and played well.. Looks bigger than last year too.

I had to leave at the start of the seniors  Family stuff came up so i can only report on the 2s game.

Daniels is not up to it, sorry hate to pot a young guy but his got the pace to play the game but god he is reminds of J McMahon when he has the ball.

Tiller looks very unfit (first game in over a year i think) and will need another few weeks at the 2s level. He also looks like he has put on a bit of weight so hopefully he can run that off.

Pratto looks a likely type for a big guy. Spent a fair chunk of his time up forward and switching with No 42 in the ruck. He has some pace on him and already a really nice frame i think he just needs to be giving sometime. One to watch imo.

Ran into Liam Jones as he was coming into the game and god i cant wait to he bulks out with the talent he has. This kid is my new great white hope

Have to agree on Liam Jones, it will take time but his work ethic is terrific also.

I see Will in the best players, but posters not overly excited.

In the seniors everyone very excited by Roughy, even though his output below Will's normal game (but also without the frees against).

Without having any visibility, I am wondering how Will's game really compares to the VFL output we had over the past 2 seasons of Street and Skipper.
I suspect Will is being marked to a higher standard.

Expectations on Minson are obviously a lot higher than than Street and Skipper and I think he will need at least one more strong performance at Williamstown before he will earn his promotion back into the seniors.

Fair enough.

But remember how so many were calling for those to replace Will in 08 and 09.

I believe Will needs to have maybe 2 or 3 games at Willy where he carries the ruck and runs into form and fitness. After all he did have a seriously interrupted pre-season.

The problem with Will is that for him to add value to the team he needs as a tall player to take a couple of contested marks and convert to goals.
That would be enough to keep you in the side and thats what JR did on Friday (well that second one should have been a goal!)

Will's goal kicking has gone backwards this year - its almost a slam it on the boot and hope for the best. Last year he appeared to make more effort on his technique.

But I'm a realist, JR's body is not going to see the season thru.
The game time though is going to be invaluable for his confidence and next year he is going to be a game breaker.

In the meantime Will gets some fitness, form and confidence and gets back to the centre breaking rucking work he is capable of.

With Roughead, we are looking for him to play a no 2 ruck role which means an ability to be a target up forward. He may not have had the impact in the ruck that Will would have, but his overhead ability is already more than what Will has offered thus far this year and even with two of the marks he missed, the approach and attack on the ball was good - got his hands to it in flight & actually gets himself off the ground.

If we were talking about players to come in and play the no 1 ruck role, Minson is still miles ahead of Roughy at the minute. Hudson is in good form so it's not a concern at this time.

While I was also impressed with the promise shown by Roughead, the fact remains that Will takes more marks than Roughy did and more than Huddo ever does.

I believ Will, after he overcomes the problems from his interrupted pre-season, will be an important part of our best 22 at finals time.

Not prepared to write Roughead off this season after eating my words about Ward last season - played out the whole year and got better rather than falling away as expected.

If Roughy does play well enough to hold his spot, we will be very well served.

Incidentally, that will require resilience and improvement from him.

One of wills problems this year is his decision making and his skills whilst he has the footy. Fair enough he can take the occasional grab but when he has the footy in his hands he turns it over, and has done for the majority of the first four games.

Im not all that convinced on Wills marking abilities. Young roughy actually took some contested marks when he went fwd. All though he didnt convert all of the chances he got, it is a good sign for a first gamer.

Give Will some time in the 2's let him get some confidence back then see if he can come back into the team.

With Ayce not quite ready just yet and huddo getting on, Will is going to be required as a ruckman in the next few years.

Darcy said on One Week at a Time that Will played well in the conditions, making 14 tackles for the game. Not sure what more a ruckman can do with an icy ocean wind dominating the game..

Probably an indication of the high standard expected of Will compared to others, when you consider that most Willi watchers seem to consider him to have been just average.

So Minson has a game where he makes the official list of best players and makes 14 tackles, but is just a game not good enough for senior elevation.

Anyone know the hitout stats.

gee being tough on roughy ! I reckon his output was just as good a minson. Roughy won at least 3 50-50 contests in the air and took pack marks I hvent ever seen Will take.

Roughy does seem to have better hands, but Will does actually take marks (2009 av 4.5). The contested marks for Roughy were hardly pack grabs, and I will re look at the replay, but clearly the one where he missed the goal was a nice mark considered contested, but every advantage was with him against a much shorter opponent.

I don't see that I am being tough on Roughead at all. I really liked his game, but he is a long way from putting in a performance that will get us over the line in the last half, as Will has done on more than one occasion.

Will's direct opponent Ben McEvoy also got in the official bests for Sandringham.
