ANZAC day sell out ?.

ANZAC day is good! It's great for all those dons fans to re-live the glory days when they were a powerhouse side. They will forever be stuck in that mentality. And why not? Rest on those xTeen premierships forever and have your ANZAC day hitout every year. That's all they really need or care about.

Err what? The two biggest drawing sides playing in an annual blockbuster annoys you? Would you prefer to forget about the history of the sport, and sporting clubs and just re-invent some random game every year. Don't be an idiot. Typical small club jealousy.

Hey guys im a first year member with the Pies.

I have a full 18 game membership, i can still rock up on the day (early enough) and just walk in yeh? We havnt been informed that we have to buy reserved tickets (where as with Saints game we were told a while in advance).

Again im new to the membership system so im unsure.

Thanks for your help

Clear lack of life here! Not to mention hypocrisy. Now how many flags have the Saints won again (cant' quite recall - sooo long ago).

As an example, for last Saturday's Carl/Ess game, AFL Members were told that on Levels M, N, and P there was "No walk up seating available on this level". However every bay being referred to had seats which weren't used. There were a couple of bays on Level P which would have been close to 25% empty. People had tickets but they didn't actually use them.
I was in P18 on Sat night and my general perception was that none of the bays on that level were "25% empty".

Take your general point, though. Reserving a seat for any event (football, theatre etc etc) does not guarantee every reserved seat will be used. Not sure it's quite to the level you're suggesting but undoubtedly some reserved seats do remain empty. Don't know that there's any obvious solution.

As I said this was only in a couple of bays which were, from memory, further around from P18 (perhaps 21 and 22 or thereabouts.) I would say there was an average of 4 or 5 empty seats each row of those bays (two or three rows looked to be less than half full), which equates to my “close to 25% empty”. Other bays weren’t as empty, but even an average of one empty seat a row equates to 4% or 5% of unused seats.

Obviously it is difficult to precisely know how many unused (but reserved) seats ther are without getting the details from the ground managers. And this sort of information doesn’t often get released. However, here’s some lines from a Herald-Sun article from early in the 2004 season (when the MCC had reduced capacity due to its redevelopment):

The Collingwood-Richmond match last Friday, also fully ticketed, was sold out but the crowd of 55,622 was well below the declared capacity of 67,000. ...

The MCC said almost 5,000 people with public reserved seats -- mainly Richmond and Collingwood members -- had not turned up.

More than 1,200 AFL members who had reserved seats didn't attend.

The ratio in the first paragraph equates quite nicely to last year’s ANZAC Day crowd of 84,829, when the ground capacity is about 100,000.

I also don’t know if there’s a simple solution, though I think a reasonable percentage of walk-up seats would help. But to take things back to my first post in this thread, the solution isn’t to force MCC members to pre-book for the ANZAC Day match. All that would happen is that the MCC Reserve would be sold out but there’d still be the two or three thousand empty seats but it would not be as obvious. I also don’t see why MCC Members should change the way they go to the football until after the AFL has successfully done something about ensuring there are no (or no more than 1%) empty seats in the outer and its own Members’ Reserve. To place the blame for empty seats solely at the MCC, as people like to do, is not the solution.

According to a list I saw this week the attendance at the 2004 ANZAC Day match was 57,294. If the ground capacity hadn’t changed from 4 weeks earlier this figure equates to 15% of seats being unused. And based on what happened at the 2004 sell-out season opener, a lot of those unused (though reserved) empty seats would have been in the non-MCC areas.

You buy tickets immediately when they go on sale.
I never seem to have problems getting tickets on AFL Membership.
The first tickets I buy before any game is the ANZAC day tickets.

What history??

ANZAC Day was never used to sell a football game in past - it was simply a half holiday where, if falling on the weekend, football was played.

It was only 15 years ago that Collingwood started playing Essendon on ANZAC Day, its continuity due largely to a freakish crowd that hasn't come close to being repeated since.

You guys draw big crowds, and that's enough tho build a tradition. But get over yourselves - no tradition exists, only a contrived sense of occasion due to the media beatup. And this whole 'spirit of the ANZACs' thing - very cringeworthy, especially awarding an ANZAC medal to a footy player.

So how many years should there be for you to consider it history?

The legacy of the ANZAC will die with this generation. A generation that only care about one thing ... themselves. Very sad indeed!
Not really, we don't honour those that died in the Boer War.

Generations move on, other things become priorities.

Its a good thing because each generation gets to decide for themselves what it is they will honour, just as you did.

You have no chance buddy. If all seats are sold then your membership wont get you into the ground. Your membership gives you entry to grounds subject to capacity. This game is sold out, unless you purchased a reserved seat your watching CH7,

We havnt been informed that we have to buy reserved tickets (where as with Saints game we were told a while in advance).

Yes there was, you must reserve a ticket for ANZAC day - and in any case, it's the biggest Home and Away game of the season, wouldn't you reserve a seat just to ensure you aren't sitting at the top of level 4?

You might get lucky and be able to get standing room tomorrow, but I'd have a pub in mind as backup.

Get an AFL Membership, then buy a six game reserved seat package for an extra $60 - best deal in town

Errrr, it's a 4 game reserve seat package for $40. And that only works if you select team support for the club who's home game it is. In other words no pre reserved seats for Collingwood fans next year.

Last year there was a huge area at the top of the members that was completely empty. There's not doubt that would've been full if it was seating for the general public. Really hope the MCC can show up tomorrow.

Err no its not it's a six game package for COLLINGWOOD AFL MEMBERS.

So you agree I've got my ticket for tomorrow then?
