We've all seen the odd club captain perform the perfect tackle, earn a free kick and get a three week suspension for his troubles, but are tackles really a part of the game that should just be rubbed out?

If you plot tackle differential against score differential you get a very slight correlation:

This gives roughly 2.4 points for every tackle you lay more than your opposition. However the correlation is weak (0.38), so what's the point?

Note: these number are from the home team's perspective, so a negative number on both axes means the home team was out tackled and outscored.

Well, maybe it's the tackle ratio that gives us a better picture.

However this has an even weaker correlation (0.30).

So perhaps what the tackle does is restrict opposition scoring.
Here is a plot of tackle count against score conceded.

This has an almost non-existent correlation (0.26)

It appears tackling is something you can take or leave in qooty.

That's a lot of effort there grumbleguts have you worked out how to take or leave tackles yet?

Well you leave a tackle by fending off the opponent's face. I've seen it done.

Yes but how do you choose to do so?
You asked me if I'd worked out how.

Here's how.

The point is I am slowly going through the stats in this game to see what actually has an effect on the scoreboard. And as far as taking them, TheInjuryFactory has that sorted.

The bottom right one is gold
I did it with my finger on a touch screen. I was even too lazy to pull out the stylus.

She is also Dr Grumbleguts. (Was a lot of effort, just so we could open each other's mail.)
Poor Dr. Mrs. Grumbleguts, who professionally AND personally knows the difference between a finger and a "stylus."

Her doctorate was in the empowerment of indigenous women through writing practices which hardly qualifies her to distinguish between anatomical digits and a hard ended implement that could break seals.

I certainly hope Dr. Mrs. Grumbleguts isn't reading over your shoulder.

I am quite confident she can distinguish fingers from stylii, regardless of the nature of her degree.
