It dawned on me the other day reading the main board that other clubs don't see us as being relevant anymore? Probably a harsh word more like a club others don't think about.

Now obviously this isn't the case for us supporters but does anyone else get pissed off with the lack of exposure we recieve compared to others? Even some other poorer clubs recurve better than we do!! I am talking about on talk back shows, media etc. Not only do we rarely get a mention on those fox footy talk shows but if we are it's all negative!!

I know the afl probably dislikes us and our results haven't been fantastic but does anyone else feel like we cop a raw end when it comes to exposure and maybe it's because other people/teams just don't care?? Kind of shits me.

I don't think we were meant to write history.

We were meant to win a flag against perhaps a interstate team and then disappear, not win 3 against the likes of Esssendon and Collingwood.

People don't like us at all, so they try to downplay us and make us irrelevant.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

Let's be realistic, we have played finals once in almost ten years, we aint gonna be playing them this year, we have some great young players like Rockliff Rich and Redden but not much else and certainly no out and out superstars coming through. Our big stars are on the wane. We are out of the way of the mainstream media (which was a good thing during our period of domination) and aside from the Aka, Fevola and management cleanout at the end of 2010, there has been little to draw them to us.

It's just a sign of where the club is placed relative to everyone else at the minute.

Nothing we can do and certainly no need to worry.

It's not particularly surprising. Of the four clubs that are based in rugby league dominated regions, two are still new and exciting (Gold Coast and GWS), and one is doing quite well this season (Sydney). That just leaves the Lions who have been poor this season and are also based in a smaller market than Sydney.

We've had a fair bit more attention recently - losing by big margins to Melbourne clubs gets people's attentions.

At the end of last year, the thought seemed to be that we were doing OK with what we had at our disposal. Now we've been belted on several occasions, that has increased the scrutiny.

To be honest, other than Voss and Brown (and occasionally Black), what else is there to talk about? I mean, Rocky is doing OK but isn't elite. Some of our youngsters look OK but they aren't doing enough to outshine someone like Cameron or Greene from GWS. Redden has stagnated. Rich has improved but not enough to really grab attention. We don't play attractive footy or do anything which is cutting edge.

If I wasn't a Lions fan, I don't think I'd pay us much attention either.

With that though our lack of (positive or negative) exposure could it get to the point where we become that irrelevant that we have to fold. Would the afl seriously bail us out if it got to that? I am not so sure. They have their toy down the road..

Winning clubs are relevant. It's as simple as that.

We aren't winning at the moment.

Yes, they would bail us out. Toy down the road is meaningless if there isnt someone for them to play against.

The current broadcast agreement is built around an 18 team competition. The AFL is committed to it.

We're already getting a decent whack of future fund money from the AFL in coming years.

They wouldn't let the only club in the third largest market in the country fold.

Out of sight, out of mind.
I'd say 85-90% of the people on these boards are from Vic-SA-WA.
Unless Brisbane (or Sydney) are making an impact towards the top end of the ladder, they will get less exposure.

Going under the radar has it's benefits, too - you'd rather a rebuilding side exceed low expectations, than fail to make high expectations.

Spot on. Couldn't tell you what's going on with Port other than apparently everyone wants to fire Primus. They're not winning and they don't get the coverage of a Vic club.

As long as we fail to perform against sides who are legitimately gunning for top 8, we'll be pretty irrelevant.

Desperately in need of multiple scalps.

Slattery_20 still loves us. That's the main thing.
Group hug!

Always thought relevant was a bit of a weasel-word. All sides, except the top handful, are theoretically as irrelevant as each other - just some get talked about more than others.
Surely you'd prefer the club quietly go about it's business, rather than the hype - then furore - you copped in 2010 ?

I do see what you are meaning Lions89, but I personally would rather go under the radar.....and when all is said and done, we are relevant to the people that matter..

...thats the Brisbane Lions FC, Players and supporters..

..doesn't really matter about anyone else and their thoughts..

Mate Your team is loved because you beat those 2. :thumbsu:

do it again and again please.

On a slightly different note, I moved down to Melbourne around a month and half ago and I have seen more advertisements on t.v for Brisbane Lions home games here than I did back in Brissy. Does anyone else find that strange considering no one is going to fly interstate to watch a Lions game........

Edit: I think I have even seen more ads for the Lions than most other Melbourne sides when I think about

Are we relevant ... in a universe that seems indifferent to our suffering?

At last, an Existentialist Philosophy thread on BigFooty.

Read two Jean-Paul Satre's and a Simone de Beauvior and call me in the morning.

As I said I saw a poster say basically we are irrelevant the other day.

Than I was watching 360 last night and they were talking about teams who were struggling now and we have become that far away from people's thinking we didn't even mention in that. (not that that is a bad thing) I just kind of thought that was funny as well as kind of sad that our team is so lowly thought of!!

Location Location Location....We are hardly the epicentre of the AFL universe but were a sport mad loving city who enjoy a national profile. With 18 teams now we are really spread thin with most comments directed at the Lions I find to be very general. Would be great for the club to have a young gun with marketability who can rival Browny in the popularity stakes down south...
Times like this it is essential to have that strong supporting core who rally to the cause...Think we will be ok...

All I had was one out of date Kierkegaard which, when washed down with a little Camus, convinced me that my search for footy club relevance was doomed to failure.

Of course, Kierkegaard made the same point wrote the seminal work, God and Man - the search for relevance in the football universe.

Not many people know it because it hasn't been translated from the original Danish. Of course Kierkegaard was writing about soccer in 19th Century Denmark, but I think his general thesis holds firm in an Australian Rules context.

Kierkegaard is still relevant.
