Port Adelaide
This makes the AFL look like nice guys in comparison.

Butler has to go for allowing this on his watch.

One leak, one bloody leak, and SA's reputation for fresh quality food is Chernobyled.
What is the point of defending this country when our own politicians are attacking it from the inside?

All's I can think of is mutant Ken.
This isn't a joke mate, this is Maralinga'ing the homeland.

It's like opening the doors to your home each weekend and putting a big sign out the front saying:
"Feel free to come in and shit on my carpet"

Yes I know everyone will work very hard to be careful, but one leak (you know cos humans are human) and the perception and possibly the reality is that area is fkd.

Vote green for Hindmarsh in the Federal election or lube up.

Got to look at the positives here.

Having 3 eyed Dolphin's swimming around in the Port River will be a major tourist attraction.

It's not like they're going to be tossing it in the a local recycling bin.

Given the amount of uranium we have and are happy to export, it makes all the sense in the world to build a proper disposal facility in the middle of nowhere — and make money hand over fist storing most of the world’s waste.

Instead it’ll remain a hysteria issue and we’ll continue to store low-level waste in places that are unfit for purpose (ie hospital and university basements), and now this military waste in metro Adelaide.

Eugh, as if AUKUS wasn’t bad enough. Is there any reason why this is being stored in close proximity to a city? Surely the risk of fallout outweighs the positives of it being a bit easier to access? Is climate the issue?

LOL. The conversations I've had here in Port Augusta over the proposed waste dump would melt your mind.

It could have been stored at a proper, well-maintained, and high security storage facility up north, but the greens had to go about spreading misinformation and scare stories to the local indigenous population up there to get them to oppose it.

Voting for the greens isn't going to solve the issue, it's going to make sure the issue remains unresolved ad nauseam.

Is there an example anywhere in the world of stored nuclear waste causing harm to humans or the environment?

I'm a greens voter but some nuclear waste is necessary and we already store it in Adelaide, as well as much more dangerous chemicals and waste.

I think this is generally a mountain out of a molehill and we should probably just have a big storage facility in the vast expanses of nothingness in the north of the state.

WA just won the rights to maintain the nuclear sub and are expanding the docks at Henderson just south of Freo in preparation of doing the work.

That seems to be the logical place to store it, rather than transporting it several thousand kms after its been taken off the sub.

Western Australia's Henderson shipyard will house a multi-billion-dollar defence precinct for naval shipbuilding and servicing of AUKUS nuclear-powered submarines to create an industry the state government claims will rival the state's massive resources industry.

The Collins class submarine maintenance contract will remain in Adelaide, but the nation's new nuclear submarines will be serviced at Henderson.

I would rather South Australia be the Food and Wine and Wool and Timber state, you know, things that are renewable.

We don't need nuclear power.

We don't need to become the toxic dumpsite for all of Australia's, UK's and US's waste, just so we can help defend our trade routes to China in case they want to attack us and then we can't trade with them, oh wait.

You don't want your house prices in Port Adelaide dropping by 50% because of an alleged toxic nuclear spill that may or may not have happened.

You don't want the entire state tainted by the radiation perception by competing businesses in NSW, Victoria etc etc.
Goodbye Penfolds, goodbye Barossa, goodbye McLaren Vale, goodbye Clare.
Their industries fail, they fail.
SA becomes a uranium mine and waste dump state.

Does anyone seriously believe that once this is established, it won't just be the thin edge of the wedge?

As REH said we certainly don't need to train nuclear waste from WA to dump state because WA won't manage it.

Yes I get hysterical about matters like this one, because like this football club, whenever everyone else takes a step forward or a deliberate step back, this state just stands there scratching their arse.

Ever bought a bottle of wine from Chernobyl?
Would you drink it?
Even if it was tested and proven safe.

Butler has to go for this, and so does Malinauskas if he was aware of it and kept it quiet.
And this is from someone that was a ticket carrying Liberal and moved to become a Labor voter.

Where should we store the waste, how about in a known flood risk area?

And yeh sack hinkley.

Woomera has been publicly discussed for a couple years not just for the subs waste but also after low level waste dump at Kimba was stopped. From March 2023. I guess Osborne is now defence land.

Where will it be stored? The government says it will be on defence land, making the most likely site Woomera in South Australia.

An official fact sheet about this deal states Australia “has committed to managing all radioactive waste generated through its nuclear-powered submarine program, including spent nuclear fuel, in Australia”.

I've not seen the legislation yet.

What about a bottle of Champagne, or Burgundy? They have nuclear power plant and radioactive storage facilities close by.
