Its pretty clear, and I've said it over and over again, the passion for AFL in Melbourne is unmatched by any other city in Australia or anywhere else in the world by any other brand of football or any other sport for that matter. The reason being AFL is inextricably linked into Victorian culture and no other brand of football or sport has that luxury anywhere else in the world. AFL should be proud of that.
However, my angle on this issue is always to point out that the passion that exists for AFL in Victoria and the culture of AFL in Melbourne can never be replicated in Sydney or anywhere else in the world.
The only two cities that come close are Adelaide and Perth and no other city in Australia will embrace AFL the way these two cities do either.
This means you have to accept the fact that the culture of AFL in Sydney and Brisbane in the distant future following the success of two new teams totalling four, will be a completely unique and different culture to that experienced traditionally in AFL heartland. It can never be similar.
Melbourne will remain the spiritual home of AFL forever and thats just the way it will always be and should be.
Sydney and Brisbane will always remain strong outposts.
