Australia Day Blockbuster

Melbourne v Sydney. In Canberra.

As far as racism is concerned, I would think that someone stereotyping the indigenous population as relying on centrelink payments would count as racism. I don't think it takes a huge leap of logic to decide that aborignals were better off before 26th January 1788.

but would they be better of now

dont no if this is mentioed

cbf to look. first id rather see my dick chopped of then aus day moved, but its okay cause i don't have one.

afl starts a week earlier, teams can have a bye same week instead of some shit split round, only game on new aus day would be dreamteam v vics or whatever.

The general consensus is that Australia became a sovereign independent nation at some point indefinable between 1919 (Treaty of Versailles) and 1986 (The Australia Act). However, some circles would argue that Australia is still not a legally sovereign independent nation as defined by the framers of The Australian Constitution Act 1901 (UK)

To think that 6th November could have been our new national day (since 1999) if we weren't so bloody childish. Oh well.

As for a "blockbuster round", here's a novel proposal: why not drop this whole "so and so must play on such and such a date" shenanigans and just let the fixtures fall where they will?

Revolutionary, I know, but it just might work.

The idea that the away team doesn't have an influence on the crowd figures is an ignorant one, that's why I didn't compare only home game crowds.

More than half your away games were in your home state where your home fans could attend. Only one of ours was.

Only an ignorant person would think that isn't relevant when comparing total crowds for the year.

What is your argument that a blockbuster game against Melbourne would sell out? I don't think it would. There are Western derbies that have drawn as little as 37,000 odd people. Freo had an Anzac day blockbuster against the reigning Premiers last year and only 38,022 people showed up (myself included). Given that, what makes you think Freo and Melbourne would draw a sell out crowd?

Because 9 of our 11 home games last year were sellouts, including the one you went to - the only 2 that didn't were in the 2nd half of the season when the games meant nothing. And this was in a shit year - even for Freo.

Who cares!!!!!!

THATS A JOKE < CALM DOWN ALL YOU PC WHACKERS
this is right who cares!

We have the R1 V the Blues which after the 75,000 plus attendance 2009 following on the 72,000 last year will be nailed down. We have Dreamtime V Essendon. Essendon have Dreamtime V us and the Anzac day. Collingwood have QB and Anzac. The Blues have us R1 and the big Collingwood clashes.

There are enough blockbusters.

Essendon vs Richmond would be an ideal game. Such an occasion should not permit mediocre crowds which many of the other Victorian clubs would pull and with both our clubs large followings it should make for a cracker of a game every year. Just let it replace the current Dreamtime at the G game we hold every year and it would be a perfect fit.

Do you mean, "replace the currect Dreamtime at the G game" because it already doesn't interest anyone else in the competition? 'Cos that makes sense.

You may fill the ground out, you may not, but it's just Ess/Rich fans. No one else cares, it's just a home and away match.

On the other hand, ANZAC day works, and is enjoyed by many neutrals.

I didn't say that the location of away games is irrelevant, the solution is not to ignore away game crowds though. Fremantle aren't well represented in Victoria, and the Oval that you play at in your home state has a capacity that doesn't allow for blockbuster crowds (and according to the info from Rob, even sellout games only attract around 38,000 people). Freo would not be a good choice (at home or away) for one of the teams to play in any potential Blockbuster game.

Because 9 of our 11 home games last year were sellouts, including the one you went to - the only 2 that didn't were in the 2nd half of the season when the games meant nothing. And this was in a shit year - even for Freo.

So you're saying the Freo-Geelong ANZAC day Blockbuster was a sellout yet almost 5,500 people didn't show up? Why would that happen? It was a beautiful Friday night, perfect for football... I don't think that would bode well for Freo being involved in an Australia Day blockbuster with Melbourne, which is the point BDP was trying to make.

Australia Day commemorates the day that Australia was first settled by white people: January 26, 1788. You could argue it actually represents one of the worst days in the history of Australian indigenous culture.

Thats just the way it is. You cant unwind history. There is no better date to choose. The abboriginals didnt even have calendars!!! For better or for worse, this date represents the start of the country as we know it.

As a Collingwood supporter; Collingwood vs Carlton...

I'd like to see something set up at some point for Sydney vs Melbourne playing for the the Barassi Trophy...?

...add to that an international curtain raiser played between two teams that have won the right to play in the lead up, through some form of comp run prior to this game...or have PNG vs NZ Aussie Rules teams battle it out...?

As for the new date, these are the proposals:

1/2/81 - Trevor Chappell bowls an underarm delivery to Brian McKechnie.

25/9/83 - Australia II won the America's Cup and Bob Hawke called employers 'bums'.

29/1/04 - Shannon Noll's 'What About Me?' debuted at Number 1.

How about the day Germaine Greer left the country? Surely that is worth celebrating?

I have an idea......................

IF (and a big IF) Australia Day was relocated to May (highly possible with Krudd at the helm, even if he knocked it back) they should introduce that weekend to be "All Star" weekend which would replace the bye (Like it did this year). instead of Vics v The Allies, we could have the Indigenous All Stars v The Rest. That way ALL Australians are involved.

Naturally Kevin Sheedy would coach the Indigenous All Stars (pending his alive factor) and Whoever the previous year's All Australian coach could coach the rest.

P.S. Apologies for my excessive use of bracketing. :D

While we are at it we mise well change the countries name and stop speaking english and start speaking the various tribal languages about which are 80 iirc.
As they are all a representation of what white man did 100+ years ago, oh also all modern technology be reverted and live bak in bark hunts and eat roos and grubs yum yum.

Cmon this topic is as stupid as my post, most indigenous people celebrate Australia day for what it is, a celebration of what Australia is not what happened in the 1800's most of which has nothing to do with a lot of people alive today.

Instead of uniforms people could paint themselves differently. And the match report now comes in the form of cave drawings!
