Shaun Marsh for no. 3? Made a ton in SA and was unlucky to be dropped after one poor test. Surely worth a go.

Issue with Shaun is the fact he will get a ton and then gets 5-6 scores under 10. Not for me.

Coming off an injury lay off after being dropped then a duck first game back. He'd want to produce something special next shield game to be a chance. Too inconsistent for me.

Also, their is no way M Marsh is in our top 6 batsman, and if Watson plays and can bowl, why would we need another all rounder? That would be crazy IMO, let's give a batsman a go.

Do you have mail that White is a chance? I would have thought he was close to none although I'd love to see him get a go. Just had the feeling he was on the outer.

Did you see us bat in Pakistan? Apart from Smith, Warner and to an extent Marsh....we have no other batsmen! Clarke isn't fit, Doolan and Maxwell are dreadful and Haddin can't hit the ball off the square. I'm not pro-White in fact I think he has severe issues which will be found out at test level, however we could do worse than pick White, especially if the other option is Doolan.

He's a chance a very big chance, particularly if the cards fall his way in terms of spots opening up in the middle order.

So let me guess the wuss captain will stay at 4 or 5..Not sure how the middle order is opening if Smith is at 5, and one of Marsh/Watson at 6. Possibly Watson at 3.

As I have posted many times, there are many valid reasons why Clarke does not and will not ever again be batting no.3 I am not going to rehash the debate. It has nothing to do with him being a wuss. For similar reasons Smith will not bat there either. White is not a No.3, (Doolan will get another go) and the current selectors are obsessed with an all rounder at no.6 that is either Watson or Mitch Marsh which I flagged months ago.

If Clarke wants to get to the World Cup - I don't think he can play in the four tests - that may be the opportunity for White.

Why not? Is his back really that stuffed?

Unfortunately, 50% of Clarke is still better than 100% of most of our other options

Yes...well his 1 century in 12 months is outstanding, we sure can't cope without him, what would we do with his 20 odd average in the last 12 months...and people bag Watson (rightfully so most of the time). Get a captain in there (Smith) and get a number 3 and 4 that value their wicket. I am so over the circus about Clarke's fitness, lets not pretend he is Ricky Ponting or something. If he isn't fit he retires.

In my eyes Clarke is the next version of Ricky Ponting and with absolutely NOTHING on the horizon in terms of gun bats, we actually need Clarke to hang on for as long as he can. Unfortunately his back condition will not heal and so the end is possibly a lot closer than many think. From here on in its a management thing. Smith will make a fine captain in time, but not yet.

you guys have to stop talking about white and start talking about dougy imo

Really? The options available for a bowling attack in home conditions is pretty sufficient I would have thought.

Interested to know why you think Smith won't become that gun bat? He's done very well over the last couple of years in a broad spectrum of conditions and shown he can perform when the chips are down.

Man you post some shit on this board.

For anyone to call Clarke a 'wuss' after his knock over in South Africa... I just don't understand.

Yeah c'mon guys, lets stop pretending that the guy who averages 50+ over 100 tests, the guy who just captained us to a 5 - 0 ashes series win last season, the guy who is still our best batsman by a ****ing mile is any good.

I think Smith will become a very, very good player, but what I am talking about is elite Ponting, Clarke, Chappell. Warner may get there.

There is no elite kid coming, unless Maddison can curb his tendencies.

IMO I'd have Silk and Lynn before Maddison, but you're right.

Clarke has actually scored 3 centuries in the last 12 months. GABBA, Adelaide and Cape town.

Ponting scored a heck of a lot more runs when we needed it, Clarke isn't even close. In terms of gun bats I agree, but Jake Doran is the one that could be elite. That said, let me say this flat, he needs to do it at Shield level first. He is the best underage cricketer I have seen period, and I saw Clarke, etc growing through the ranks. I have said this before, if Clarke isn't fit, he should man up and either step down and retire. We can deal without him, South Africa have dealt with not G. Smith in their lineup.

I called him a wuss because he is, for 85% of his career he has hid at number 5 and 6. Now sure people can say 'well it is his best position'....but if he is our best bat he bats at 3, especially when he is sending out lambs to be slaughtered like Quiney, Hughes, Doolan, etc. Not as if we have a Rahul Dravid at number 3 in our Shield ranks to put at number 3.

I never said he wasn't a good bat, I said he wasn't a great bat. Great bats want the pressure, and perform in the toughest position, Clarke seems to want to be 'comfortable'. I'm sorry but whilst he is good, he isn't great in my eyes. His captaincy is okay, but it is terrible in the sub continent- yet to even draw a match in the sub continent. He is too aggressive as a captain over there.
