For all this talk about opening the one with the foem and technique to move up the order is Carey.
Open with him and have a bowling all rounder at 7 either Nesser or Sutherland.
Otherwise just go with Bancroft or Kostas if he peels off another ton.

yeah thats a short term fix.

whoever they select say they choose harris - doesn't mean he is our forever opener , we can just move on to the next until someone takes their opportunity. there's talk head may open in sri lanka - and if so, get him there for now - that buys us 6-12 months. i guess the worrying sign there is we'll need 2 openers by then as i can't see khawaja going past the ashes next summer.

in any case, selectors must have had an idea who was gonna open if green was fit.

it's basically shuffling the batting order to fit in a batting or bowling allrounder in or a mcsweeney or pick a specialist opener.

Next years Ashes could be
1 ??
2?? (A shuffle)
3 Labs
4 ???
5 Head
6 Green
7 Carey
8 Cummins
9 ???
10??
11 ???
In theory all of Khawaja Smith M Marsh Starc Hazlewood and Lyon could be cooked in the next year or 2.
But they need to start planning and hopefully have someone establishes.
If they think Konstats or Bancroft are long termers go with them or a McSweeny or Inglis at the peak now and can slot in.
Bowlers have Murphy Morris who could rotate in for a game and get a taste

you think they'll all retire at the end of this summer ?
or retire overseas - WTF final (providing they make it of course) - this isn't even as big as the ashes in most people's eyes

it may be the end of the road for some of them (if injury doesnt get them first) at the end of next years ashes as after that is an 8 month break before a gruelling 12 months which has 20 tests pencilled in.

interesting you have green back in the side and batting at 6. he may bat at 5 and head floated up the order - who knows but green might have to wait until smith finishes up, unless smith finishes his career down the order , while the team is transitioning.

I think Carey goes well at 7 and would rather leave him there, especially since he has the burden of keeping.

I'm ok with an inventive strategy to get Neser in the team though, he's very unfortunate our quicks have been resilient in terms of injuries in recent years, he'd do great at test level with both the ball and bat imo.

I don't think a line has been put through his name, but he's running out of time/chances.

Are you sure he averaged 50 last year?
I know he only averaged 24 in the Shield.

He had a really good county season I think? I remember there was quite a lot of discussion around it last summer.

It sounds like they're going to pick an opener for the first test and go in a bowler light.

But if they pick an allrounder and it's not Webster I'll be leading a demonstration. 6 for 17, WA bowled out for 53.

I agree with that,
Maybe at white ball cricket but not in a test

One thing that struck me watching these two current exciting series (NZ v India, Eng v Pak) is how the pitches have been prepared to give the home team an advantage and get the bowlers in the game (not that it's working for India at the moment).

Australia hardly ever seems to do that these days (Brisbane last year was an anomaly). Our priorities seem to be satisfying commercial TV by having a product that lasts for 5 days.

I'm torn. On the one hand, more cricket is great (though not if it's a road), but I miss the days of batters hopping about as they tried to adjust to fast and bouncy pitches.

We have the best fast bowling attack in the world at the moment (and yes, I know India has Bumrah), why not try it this summer?
