Australian Cricket Broadcast Rights 2018 - 2023

Again, doubling down for another ludicrous post. To get on your high horse and say everyone who has Fox, the internet (how exactly are you posting??), insurance (absolute wtf at this) or goes out for meals is a muppet is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Budget for the things you want in life, some things I'll value more than you and others you'll spend money where I wouldn't bother. At the end of the day it's none of our business how others spend their disposable income (unless one of those people going around moaning about not having enough, in which case yes the muppet description fits, but just downright stupid to throw a blanket statement out there as you have).

I'm going to assume you have Foxtel, because broadly speaking he's right to say that pay tv is a waste.

The less cricket that Ch9 have after these negotiations, the happier I'll be.

For all the good they've done for cricket in constantly extending the use of different technologies, the last 5 years or so have seen them become lazy as **** in trying to improve the broadcast, and their commentary is unlistenable.

If that means some BBL goes to Foxtel because Ch10 can't afford it all, so be it. As others have said, if the BBL is moving to a full 14-game home & away season, Foxtel is going to have to play a role with that anyway.

I would like to see a situation similar to what happens with non-Victorian AFL markets though. I understand having 2 teams in Vic & NSW, with only 1 in the other markets makes it difficult - but I think they need to find a solution where all of a teams games are shown in its local market.

I work away on a roster so I don't have it as only get a week a month at home.

But previously did (share house), I honestly reckon it was worth it for the footy, international (and previously domestic) cricket and basketball available to watch comfortably. While I agree there is a lot of low grade tripe on the other channels, at the end of the day like anything if it can fit your personal budget circumstances and it brings sufficient enjoyment for the cost then I don't think anyone can get on their high horse and look down on the muppets.

Package deals
The CA rights tender starts with its "Package A": a selection of men's Tests, including all Ashes Tests, and the Boxing Day and New Year's Tests in Melbourne and Sydney respectively. All women's internationals are also in the package, as is the Allan Border Medal.

Package B, which could be sold separately or with Package A, contains the remaining men's Tests. It leaves open a scenario that Package B may even be sold to pay TV, as is the case with Package D, which includes all men's one-day internationals and the state-based domestic one-day series, if free-to-air TV is not interested in either.

Package E is all men's international Twenty20 matches, and Package F is the prime group of Big Bash matches; 28 matches plus the finals series, as well as the women's Big Bash League and its finals.

Another 28 Big Bash matches could be snapped up separately by free or pay TV in Package G, or sold in conjunction with Package H. Having at least some Big Bash games exclusively could be enough to tempt Foxtel into a big bid.

There is also a separate "clips and highlights" package in the document, which could be attractive a telco like Telstra or Optus or internet giants Facebook, Amazon and Twitter. In a nod to broadcasters wanting rights across all platforms, CA has not carved out digital streaming rights as a separate package.

Channel Ten has emerged as the potential home of cricket although a partnership with Nine or pay television's Fox Sports appears a more likely scenario.

Bids for the latest round of Cricket Australia's next broadcast deal closed at 5pm on Monday, although there will still be much to discuss between networks and the game's governing body.

The expiring five-year contract was worth about $500 million in cash and contra, with the new deal, expected to be over six years, to be between $900 million and $1 billion, as reported by Fairfax Media in 2016.

Channel Nine and Ten were reportedly preparing a joint bid, which would involve the rights to international cricket on home soil and the Big Bash League being split between the parties. The two networks had also spoken with Fox Sports, which is desperate to add to its summer content in a bid to retain, and perhaps, attract subscriptions.

However, sources on Monday said Ten had also been ready to bid for the entire package of international and BBL rights, as it had five years ago, and had the backing of new owner, American network CBS, to do so. CBS has not wanted to comment when contacted by Fairfax Media through the bidding process but is understood to have the funding to make a major splash.

If I were Channel 10 admin I would be going after the 2019 Ashes & WC in England.

Apart from 'event' shows like The Bachelor and Masterchef their ratings during the year have been atrocious for a few years now; one night this week they barely beat SBS in primetime.

During mid-2019, those two sporting events are at favourable times in primetime and at least give them the chance to promote some other shows around like they do with 'I'm a Celebrity' with the BBL.

Fairly sure 9 got a package for the 2015 + 2019 ashes so 10 won’t be showing them, but I agree with your logic for 10.

There’s a lot of European daytime sport that syncs up well with our prime time and I’m surprised 10 haven’t really got any of it. Ashes, Wimbledon, French open, British open golf, Tour de France have all done good numbers for their respective channels.

Channel 9 have the 2019 Ashes. Fox will probably show every match, or as many as possible from the World Cup, with a free to air station mainly showing Australia's games, maybe one non Aussie QF, both semi finals and hopefully the final regardless of who's playing.

A little unfair, I think. CA has never been as guilty of chasing money as the ECB - or the BCCI.

They never could though. International cricket could never be sold to Foxtel. I think you're giving them credit for something that was out of their hands.

The BBL is the first time in modern history that domestic cricket is worth something.

I think getting any part of it on Foxtel is a massive disaster, so I expect CA to do it.

Did I just read on twitter that Cricket Australia have asked everyone to submit new bids because the $$ were not enough. After this latest scandal I wonder if they'll get offered more, the same or less.
You did read that. Just horrible, horrible timing for CA. Fantastic timing for the networks.

I wish Foxtel would show shield games. And I know this isn’t in this deal but if they want content the IPL is calling..

I think the website coverage that CA currently offers is quite decent. They don't have the rights to IPL, as (Australian broadcast) rights are owned by CricketGateway and YuppTV (apparently).
