Australian Cricket Broadcast Rights 2018 - 2023

Only guessing but I could see Channel 9 continuing with the cricket, with the tennis being shared between one of Channel 9's other channels and either Fox or even ESPN which is shown on Foxtel anyway.

Because of the way CA packaged the rights, 9 could still bid for test cricket, given it mostly runs from November to New Years and doesn't really conflict with tennis season. I'm surprised that they prioritised the Tennis over the Big Bash though.

What's happened to cricket's footprint in the UK post 2005 (when sky exclusively picked up everything cricket related) should be a cautionary tale as to why Fox Sports should, at the absolute most, be a very junior partner in any TV rights distribution.

Agreed, even though you would end up with the superior broadcast the damaging effect on the visibility of the game and diminished ability to capture the public imagination is not worth it even as a hardened cricket fan with Foxtel.

Unless Fox can get the BBL and I'd be surprised if CA would allow that to go behind a paywall, the anti syphoning laws severely restrict what they can actually bid for.

I believe the legal way around this is for a FTA network to nominally buy the rights and then simply not air it.

I wouldn't completely rule out Nine bidding for the international rights. The Australian Open is only two weeks long and they could upgrade one of the secondary channels to HD (like SBS Viceland).

A few articles today have suggested that 9 will still want the Test rights, whilst 10 would take all International and Domestic Limited Overs cricket. The tests won't overlap with the tennis, so they could still show it.

Assuming CA doesn't end up changing the order of Tests and ODIs for good.

If 10 and Fox simulcast tests, the line up could be:

Host: Roz Kelly

Commentators: Border, Julian, MWaugh, Ponting, Gilchrist, Fleming, Warne, 1 or 2 overseas commentators.

Could do a lot worse than that imo.

Mark Waugh being an Australian selector is a bit of a conflict of interest. Tubbs was on channel 9 though while being a CA director so maybe it's no big deal to broadcasting companies.

Wonder if 9 will demand more day night tests?

Also does anyone really care about international 50 over cricket outside of world cups?

Would rather Channel 10 get the rights. As much as Mark Howard and Mark Waugh irritate me (almost to Slater and Nicholas levels!) they would treat cricket a lot better than Ch 7 would (remember their failed Ashes coverage many years ago ? :p)

Hopefully Slater stays with NRL coverage. Problem is Seven will just fill cricket with footy commentators. I can imagine the boxing day promos now : "BT on BD".

The Big Show Maxwell Big Boy OH BOY!

Maybe not match day, he was still doing footy show shite wasn't he (though that got a severe remake this year I hear)? I rarely see anything NRL despite where I live.
Never did NRL coverage. He only ever did the Footy Show which he hasn't done for 3 years.

I have had foxtel as long as I can remember and it was the first I have had installed for the houses I have lived in since moving out. But I would be very disappointed if foxtel had exclusive rights to any form of Australia’s international summer of cricket. Fox has been fantastic for footy because it allowed 4/5 additional games getting air time which previously wasn’t the case.

International cricket in Australia has always been on free to air, last week confirmed it is still the national sport. Kids deserve the right to grow up and have cricket readily available during the summer months. I believe the CA will regret forever the day it goes on pay tv like in the UK & NZ.

BBL is a funny one due to the lack of history (im pretty sure it commenced on Fox) idc nearly as much. But I think channel 10’s coverage has generated significant interest from both women and kids etc and it will be sad to see it potentially lose that it it goes behind a paywall.

I hope foxtel have simulcast rights but that’s where it ends

No, I meant during our International summer. Vaguely recall them showing a Sri Lanka vs India game or something an a one off?
You'd be going back a fair way, but I think there was a tri-series with India and Sri Lanka - well after tri-series had been mostly abandoned by CA - where you might be right and Nine didn't show the non-Australian games. If memory serves, it might have been the last time Sachin and Muralli played in Australia for their nations.
