Yeah, Fox have said exclusive mens white ball internationals are non-negotiable. Whether that's with 7 or 9.

I imagine Ten/Paramount might look at all (home) internationals on FTA, but moving more of the BBL and maybe WBBL to pay only. That might mean keeping the extended BBL, to get enough pay-exclusive content mixed with enough FTA to keep the league visible.

Paramount service for the A-League is better than it started out. There were no replay options, etc, to begin with. Its probably still not as slick as Kayo but now serviceable at least.
I doubt many are paying to watch BBL

I don’t mind 7s coverage - it’s a hell of a lot better than 9s last year. I find myself watching more of 7 than fox. international cricket at home has to be on FTA - I’m pretty sure that’s what it says on the anti-siphoning legislation- unlike America the government doesn’t that seriously. I have no problem with Fox - I love the Fox terristal coverage of NFL and Big Noon Saturdays, I enjoy fox footy and cricket but I think CA’s love affair with fox is going to ultimately **** them. All internationals in Australia have to be on FTA - they just have to be.

I don't get Australian sports codes' reluctance to split the rights between multiple FTA networks.
Just offer the Tests, the One-Dayers, and the T20 as three separate 'packages'.
Ideally, each network gets one type of cricket.
And if Foxtel wants, they can have exclusive cable and satellite rights.
Streaming will most likely be a cluster but that would be the only potential major downside for the viewer.

Fox Sports are in the box seat to retain streaming and pay per view rights, and indications are Channel 7 remain well positioned to remain as the game’s free-to-air partner.

The Big Bash has been the main source of tension with the rights, and although ratings have dropped significantly on Channel 7 this summer – overall viewing numbers for the BBL are strong.

Although not quite the halcyon days of a million viewers a night, the BBL is achieving numbers of 750,000-850,000 for simulcast numbers across Fox Sports, Kayo and Seven.

Almost half of matches this season have gone down to the wire, meaning viewers are holding on right through to the end – and there is a feeling across the board that the quality of games has improved.

Broadcasters will get their wish in the new deal with the number of matches to be cut from 60 to about 40, and the solid TV and streaming numbers this season show the competition can still pack a power punch in the ratings game if the product is right.

given that many games are < 400k (metro) on Ch7, does 350k+ sound right for Fox/Kayo?

The anti-siphoning list was changed to allow the current deal, only home Tests are on the list (of the regular mens home summer, away Ashes and some WC matches are also there). And being there is no guarantee, there is Ministerial discretion to hand it to pay if FTA bids are deemed to not be genuine.

Sounds like a stretch - does it include people flicking past the channel on their way to somewhere else?

350k metro FTA viewers means around 200k regional. Typical Fox viewership atm is about 175k. ~75k for Kayo (and Foxtel Go), that's 800k all up.

Is that just for cricket ?
That's for the BBL, for games that are aired on Seven. The Fox-exclusive games have approximately 0k FTA viewers.

a sydney game on xmas day has been obvious for years and years. and as long as they play BBL games on Boxing Day, the "xmas day is so special' argument is nonsense. i struggle to believe players would rather catch a flight to perth on xmas day (as one lucky team gets to do every year) than play a game.
Probably a couple of million people work on Christmas Day, from Police, nurses, hospo, petrol stations, airlines, bus drivers, miners, journalists, etc etc. My dad did it for years, you just shift your Christmas event around a bit. It's not the end of the world.

I agree, as mentioned half the guys play BBL and live in different states. We expect touring teams to spend Christmas away from home and plenty of people work.

It's a no brainer and BBL on Christmas Day would be great. I don't think it has to be a derby although that would help the crowd, mostly it's a TV game.

Much like the AFL it's a fairly predictable result. Nine were never serious, Ten / Paramount need to get bigger and Seven
/ Kayo were never going to let a big sport go without a replacement.

Another good example today of why Tennis appeals to Channel Nine. Tennis Australia can guarantee content for a four and a half week block day/night regardless of rain.

Why would CA want to work with someone who sue them every time things don’t go the way they want? Especially when the sole goal is to lower the value of the deal? It’s like an abusive relationship at this point.

7 sued the AFL when 9/10 had the rights in the early 2000s.

A vendor suing their supplier is not unheard of - it happens quite a lot

Seems pretty obvious the only thing CA are worried about with this deal is making foxtel and newscorp happy, 9 and 10 dont really want to get into bed with foxtel as they have rival streaming services 7 don't so this is the easy way to keep foxtel in the mix and that seemed the ultimate goal for CA, the deal would only be a good deal for them if foxtel get their slice of the pie.

The lawsuit is definitely more churlish this time, complaining about the quality of the product during a once-in-a-century pandemic. It’s just buyer’s remorse. Even now, they are trying to carve out just the Tests, screw the rest of the game, which could end up behind a paywall.
