I dunno, Turnbull was head of the Australian Republic Movement the last time we had a referendum. Maybe if the Libs win the election, Turnbull will actually have some say on their policies.

I think we'll have to wait for Betty to kick the bucket for anything to get through, though.
Turnbull has proven that he has no principles. He's, right now, effectively Abbott without the weekly PR gaffs.

There's also talk of a new push for a unification of Ireland, as Northern Ireland also voted in favour of remaining. That would take the diagonal red cross out of the Union Jack.

What a cluster**** of a decision by the UK. The 2014 Scottish Independence referendum had 44.7% of Scots in favour of leaving the UK. Today's result will strengthen the 'leave' vote for Scotland. I don't think it'll be 5-10 years, more like 1-2.
Northern Ireland loathe RoI with a passion. I was reading a report today that despite the EU referendum result, Northern Ireland prefer staying with the U.K. Over a unified Ireland. So despite them polling for remain they're more likely to stay with the U.K.

So with the decision for Britain to leave the EU today, and Scotland voting strongly to stay, I reckon Scotland could leave the UK within the next 5-10 years. That said, I'd imagine the Union Jack would change if that ever happened. Would the Union Jack change on our flag change if theirs did? Is there any precedent for that?
The Union Jack for us would stay the same. It's not about now, but what they stand and stood for. Those democratic ideals that have built our country and culture. So even if the UK completely fell apart we keep those ideals alive and the old symbol that helped represent them.

I forgot to reply to this post deliberately held off replying to enjoy the benefit of hindsight of the election, but you're right and its only going to get worse from here on in. The republic debate won't be brought up this term, you would think.

I really hope you're joking because what better way to alienate us even further from the people who need to be educated that we're not going to ruin their marriage or start armageddon than to chuck the rainbow flag on the Australian Flag.

The Australian Flag should represent ALL Australians. This has been said on this thread before. For the same reason the Aboriginal Flag shouldn't be in that corner the rainbow flag shouldn't be there either. In fact the Aboriginal Flag at least has some relevance as it's the flag of the first peoples of the land.

Yes, this was very much a tongue-in-cheek post, and I do agree with you. Some of the designs here are, to my mind outstanding, though I personally don't think we'll see any change unless Australia ever does becomes a republic.

It's generally a good idea to use an emoji or some other way of making it clear that you're having a laugh. I apologise for smacking you over the head - I too am surprised people haven't suggested that flag in the interests of "equality"!

Eight pointed star to represent each state and territory, green and gold as they are our national colours, no union jack and no southern cross just to piss off the bogans

My only issue is the number of points. The seventh star doesn't represent just the ACT and Northern Territory. It represents all territories. From memory, the seventh point was added when Australia took control of the territory of Papua, and when the ACT and NT were officially recognised as territories, they decided to keep the number and change its meaning. Therefore, Eight would be fine if it was just Australia, but not all territories

I'm fairly sure the territories would get over it.

Eventually.

(And if they seceded in disgust, it would just make the flag that much more accurate!)
