Probably been mentioned before (possibly even by me!), but I've always loved the simplicity of this one, plus the use of green and gold whilst retaining the current blue.

Could use an adaptation for each state, keeping the coloured bars and replacing the Southern Cross with each state's badge and the relevant colour as the background.

Yeah, i much prefer this to any other design I’ve seen.

This is when I'm going to be political. We have had the Australian flag since federation therefore I believe we need to keep the flag. we need to keep our nood to our foundered the British hence why we need to keep our current flag. For 117 years it's been our flag and we need to keep it. As for Australia Day, we need to keep the day because we are celebrating Australia being discovered by Captain James Cook not federation or just another random day. I respect the indigenous peoples views but we need just continue to celebrate our great country. We can't change history so what good will it do.
That contributes nothing to discussing alternative designs to our flag. So it's not in the right place in this thread. I'm not going to correct your factual innacuracies because this isn't the place for Year 8 History.
If you don't have an alternate design to contrinute or discuss you don't need to post anything.

This sounds like it’s going to go well.

This is wrong, the flag wasn’t adopted until later on.

I could take this bait, but I won’t, this is a graphic design thread. This thread has nothing to do with the Australia Day debate and you are just shit stirring. Take it elsewhere.

I am however going to.

Corrections:

Australia Day falls on the day that the First Fleet raised the Union Jack for the first time on Australian Soil. This occurred several days after the fleet arrived (between the 18th and 20th of January 1788) and was done to show claim to the land when La Perouse sailed into Botany Bay on the 26th of January 1788 after sitting off the coast due to poor weather for 2 days (the First Fleet were going to move to Port Jackson earlier but also were held up until the 26th).

The Australian flag was not approved until 1903.

However, that is all I am going to say on the matter. Back to the flag discussion.

I was giving reasons why we should not change our current flag
You then began talking about the change the date movement though, which has nothing to do with our country’s flag.

Give the kid a break. That said, Lynton, your views will change as you learn more about Australia and the world. You'd do well to listen more than you speak, not only while you are young but as you age as well. Our flag is overdue for an update, Australia Day does not mean the same thing to all Australians but our British heritage is an important part of our identity. Our future and it's symbols should, and I believe one day, will, reflect all Australians and our history. That's a long time away though!

I've never seen that design before and it took me a minute to realise the seven-pointed star inside. I'm so glad I've seen that now. +1
I hadn't seen it before either. Brilliant design and more thoughtful that it first appears. Also ticks the all important 'flag a child can draw' level of simplicity box.

Can't remember where I originally heard it but I do agree with the idea of flags being so simple even a child can draw them. I spent a lot of time at school just drawing the flags of nations such as France, Japan and Germany in my books because of how simple, yet meaningful they are (eg. French flag colours representing Liberty, Fraternity, Equality). Next Australian Flag should embrace a "symbolism through simplicity" design.

This is the one IMO.

I'd widen the green and gold so those two stripes take up half the flag though

Im so glad I made this thread. Pops up once a year to rear its head :p
When's the Kiwi national holiday? I wonder how many people we can offend. (jokes Kiwi friends)

Why do we need to keep the current union jack flag to honour and respect our British heritage? Why can't we have our own flag but still recognize their influence? We need to forge our own destiny and unique identity, not follow suite with our British overlords. Right now our flag makes us look like a 40 year old man still living in their parents basement, lacks any creativity or identity.

+1 for the Golden Wattle Flag. It's bloody gorgeous.

This is pretty 80s but I like the simplicity and use of space... Smeagle would like the negative space.

Maybe it's just me but does anyone else find it so weird WA is black and yellow? Just doesn't fit a state that has a green and parky and beachy capital city, blue coasts the whole way around (with proper, good beaches) and red and yellow sands and stone and desert everywhere else?
