I don't know what it is about these two teams but things always happen when we play each other. It's a unique rivalry that seems to build and build each time - there are always super human solo performances or weird occurances... just off the top of my head I can recall these happenings....

West coast scrape together 1.12.18 in their lowest ever score - at windy hill in the late 90's

Sheedy ties down the windsock a few years later as he tries to unsettle the visitors, the eagles get up against a 15 man essendon....somerville take a hanger.....(thats news in itself)

Bewick kicks 8 or 9 goals at subiaco in 93 - we just fall short

Who can forget the jacket waving game at the g that year...salmon kicks 1.7 but we sneak the win to sheedys delight

ive got memories in the late 90's a couple of times of sumich coming from no where..like being plucked from the reserves to come in and get big bags - he saved them for us.

there was that cracking final when we played at the g after losing our first final, sheedy roused the melbourne people enough to get a full mcg all waving their jackets. Hird who was hiding at full back disobeyed his coach and ran the length of the ground to kick a goal in a 70 something point win.

Sheedy makes a cut throat gesture in mitchell whites direction after the seagull hit mark johnson..

Hird gets fined for speaking out against umpires...comes out the following week and plays and all time great last quarter willing us over the line and hugging a fan on the fence

hird and sheedys final game ....... after losing heavily to the reigning premier for most of the game scott lucas kicks 8 in the final quater to nearly pinch the game

mark le cras kicks 12 at the g last year in a another super human performance.

I'm sure there are loads more things that dont jump out at me instantly but there is just something about this rivarly - the lesser team often gets up, players spur themselves on possibly out of mutual respect? I gained respect for this mob when they all stayed to clap hird and sheedy off after their last game in a standing ovation...

what will this week bring? what super human performace or controversy?

whats the next chapter....

Reimers will float down to the back-line while the Q-Stick is having a shot at goal and will pick up his disgarded glove and run down the other end of the ground to give it to the EFC cheer squad.

Q-stick will miss his shot and then proceed to chase Kyle around the field and threaten to kill him.

An epic rivalry indeed

I was at the G in 93' for the jacket waving game....cried my eyes out (I was 10)

Salmon did it to us again one or two years later with a mark in the goal square just before the siren.

An individual performance you have forgotten was a late ninetees (maybe 99) game when you guys had started your all conquering run and we were sliding badly. Malthouse sent the great man, Peter Matera, to a forward flank or pocket and he proceeded to kick 7 and help us win when nobody gave us a hope. I was there and it is one of my favourite eagles memories. What a player.

Two proud clubs on the way back up the table, should be a cracker.

Incidently, who does your tagging these days? Does Sir James play taggers? I only ask because Kerr is starting to build into some form and Shuey is establishing himself. If you let one or both run free you might pay a hefty price. The selwood brothers and mcginnity do our dirty work and do a good job of it, don't think Jobe will have as easy a time as he did last week.

GO EAGLES

Hocking has been the hard tag in 2011.

Expect him to go to Embley.

James Hird in that game in 07? You guys came back to win by a point?

I also seem to recall (I think 1998), each team gave the other an absolute caining at their respective home grounds.

Yeah I love playing essendon, apart from the derby, it's the game I get most excited about (finals notwithstanding). Sydney had it for a few years there, but I think that's cooled and it's back to the dons.

I'd jizz.

I remember in round four 1999 we'd won our opening three games and then headed down to Subi. Lloyd was coming off thirteen goals against the Swans in the previous week and that Sunday afternoon against the Eagles we got belted. If I recall correctly, we only scored three goals and went down by 70-80 points. I've disliked them ever since.

I remember that game - we were insipid. Might have been a bit of a catalyst for the ensuing 18 months though :thumbsu:

This would make my year

I get the op, but there are so many holes!

When did we play at windy hill in the late 90's? Lol.

Le cras kicked 12 at the dome, Lucas only kicked 7 in that last quarter.

But let's not let the truth get in the way of a good op! Lol

This is the one round every year that makes me nervous. I can take an Anzac Day flogging. Being outclassed by The Cats has no effect on my mood. Even a narrow loss to The Blues I get over relatively quickly.
But the one team I have a LOVE/HATE relationship with is Wet Toast.
What is it with Wet Toast that makes us so scared? Even in a wooden spoon season, they beat us TWICE? Thats half of their wins for the entire damn 22 match season!!!! I have long lived by the creed that it does not matter where the Bombers finish at the end of the season, as long as it is above Wet Toast. And if we could only beat one side all season, every season, that side is Wet Toast.
So it doesn't matter what happens on Sunday, as long as our score is more than theirs at the end of it. One point is enough for me.
After all, it is Mother's Day, and nothing would make my day more than beating a bunch of mothers.
So please make 2011 the year that the order is restored.....
