Our side is so unbalanced atm. Way too many talls and we’ve got 3 wingers / half backs on the bench. The team has been getting worse week after week. Kelly surely had to make way this week.

The give away for me is he was on the opposite wing to where he started a lot of times and secondly Carlton forced us down one side for 70% of the game so he played more like a ruck rover with a lot of back half work. It was not really a traditional wing role where he held his width like Duursma and Cox and in my view that is why he played well. It was more a midfield / extra behind the footy role . The most time I saw him actually at centre wing was at the bounce and he hardly pressed forward. They also ran a few players along that wing when he was in the contest .It is just a comment on what I was watching at the game and further to the discussion that he is average if he has to play a more outside wing role . His disposal is not the best to start with so you really do not want hm as a link going inside 50.
This is exactly what role a skinny wing is. They would never play setterfeild on a fat wing. Doesn’t have the leg speed or the endurance. You can tell the skinny wing at a stoppage because generally they playing defensive side of the ball, and either unmanned or manned by an oppo hf. For example Gresham will get high around stoppage to strike the oppo skinny wing as a hf. The days of having a wing stand on a wing are long gone. Sometimes when ball ups are central of the ground you will see two wings covering both sides of the ball covering exits.

Obviously positioning can change with stoppage tactics, eg actually using setterfield as the hit to player because he is free or him manning up an oppo mid to free up one of ours. Regardless setterfeild has played that skinny wing for us plenty this year.

Eagles quite a tall side, so allows for us to go taller

But also means Kelly is important for potentially having to play on a Maric/Darling when/if needed

But hes also our best matchup for L.Ryan. No doubt a Redman or mcgrath could do it

Someone was always going to miss out and be unlucky. Setters, Menzie, Cox or Kelly were the only options

Menzie form been good (Also allows the 3 small fwds still without Gresham if that is in fact Personal reasons)

Kelly as above

I thought it may be Cox out or to a sub but he kicked 3 goals 2 weeks ago and has been ok

To me the setterfeild omitting makes sense. It’s already very risky to bring duursma Draper redman back from injury in the same match, setterfeild has struggled to finish games healthy. Too many guys carrying injury clouds in one match to also carry setterfeild, even though I think he’s in our best 22

Especially with the likelyhood of us using our sub on one of the ruckman already.

Extra on ball . Skinny wing . Call it what you will.
It was not the same way Duursma or Cox have played. It is also not the same way other sides use the wings either.
The original discussion was about Satterfield's ability to play an outside wing role which has been floating around for a while.
I was simply pointing out what he was doing on the night . A lot of times he was back half at the contest and someone else was pushing along that wing.
If we want him to play the role he played against Carlton he can as it was virtually back half inside midfielder . What people are saying is if you want your wing to play Duursma or Josh Daicos then Setterfield is not your man.:)

Setterfield omitted is crazy. Must just be his knee.
Different opposition. Setterfield was used more as an extra midfielder in the back half of the ground last week as the Blues are a contested footy side. He did not attend one center bounce. They have Duursma back to play a more traditional wing this week.

It’s actually extremely common for one wing to sit defensive side of stoppage. Almost every team sets up that way. The role is skinny wing. Which is actually just wing. Usually changes whether you play fat or skinny wing based on your best attributes or even what side of the ground the stoppage is on. We have generally put the Kelly’s, heppells, setterfeilds in skinny wing, but I have also seen duursma, cox, Martin also playing it. It wasn’t a one off role for setterfeild it’s a basic midfield structure that almost every team uses.

McGrath has played it in previous seasons and everyone on here was getting on his back for slamming the ball on his boot, but that’s common for a skinny wing. Usually if you have got the ball it means it’s from a broken stoppage.

Done. We do not agree. If you think Setterfield was playing 100% the usual role we use on the wing then that is all there is to say.

Classy.
For what it is worth I do know that the skinny winger at the stoppage is also known as the sweeper and is the defensive player. If it is so funny then I will refrain from giving my opinion.
I’m just trying to educate people on the modern football stoppage. I continued to see comments about setterfeild not playing wing when he clearly was. Just not in the way that the average fan sees and knows that position. Skinny wing can be used in a multiple of ways, defensive, attacking, freeing up a man. Sweeper was a common term used more in the midfield when it was common to move the ball out of a stoppage backwards instead of the front handballing game we see more of now.

I found it funny that you said done we don’t agree, when the post above you were saying that setterfield was dropped because of his specific role that day, when skinny wing is used in every game.

But I’m keen to move on too. I didn’t expect another reply after the Done thing

Well I did delete it as I decided it was not a great post by me but anyway thanks for educating me.

Martin should be used where we need him. Hb wing forward, inside mid. The more flexible our team becomes the More of a weapon Martin can become.
That’s why I’m wondering if we’ll be moving Martin mid/fwd this week given we’ve omitted Setterfield and haven’t brought in another mid.
