Trade Requested Bailey Smith [reportedly headed to Geelong]

Yeah, but Smith has done an ACL, been played out position, not kicked a footy for 15 months, and the Cats actually didn’t know he existed before he nominated them yesterday, so why would they give up anything of note?
Rather than look at what's "fair" for a very good player.

If you were Andrew Mackie, what would you do ?
Consider everythings rigged in favour of Geelong - OOC, Player wants out, been injured for a season...
and Mackie also knows if he goes to the draft the bulldogs end up with nothing..

Would you feel obligated to fork out more than a late first rounder ?

All this assumes that Smith won't be swayed by an offer from another club which has more currency on the trade table

Geelong has so much kudos in the bank as being a good team to trade with and play for that one bad deal wont impact anything reputationally. If anything, because of geelongs great reputation it will be the dogs that get blamed for a deal not getting done even if it wasnt their fault.
I can assure you, West Coast don't think you're a good team to trade with, they think you're a-holes. Kept moving the goalposts in the first year so Kelly, who was desperate to get home for family reasons, was forced to spend an extra year in Geelong because he was good value on minimum wage.

Moved the goal posts?

We literally said in our press release when Kelly requested a trade said he was "highly likely to remain at the club". Shock horror he remained at the club.

Yeah that's the assumption... but that's not really looking like happening at this stage.
The other point is that Geelong don't want their relationship with Smith to go off on the wrong foot if they're opening themselves to risk

Even if Geelong recruit Smith through whatever draft mechanism, Geelong can say "the Dogs were being unreasonable" all they want to Smith and his management team, they can't pretend that the maximum being offered wasn't the maximum being offered or that the Dogs were unreasonable in rejecting it. Smith might be annoyed that Geelong recruited him for years and made a commitment to him, but left a certain amount of risk and uncertainty in the whole situation, even if Geelong do get him over eventually.

Yeah I agree I don't think either party want Smith to walk to the draft. Its a lose lose for everyone involved.

Giants just got band two, end of first round for Isaac Cumming.

Maybe Cats can trade for it, F2 + 35 for example, and package it up with 15 for Smith.

The afl should have a system in place to stop one team from bending over another team at the trade table like this

Instead of just offering peanuts and saying we will just grab him in the psd/national draft doesn’t seem very honourable or good for equalisation
Or just be like the soccer - no salary cap limits, no draft, buy and sell players freely, no equalization, relegation of poor performing sides

I don't necessarily disagree with this in principle, but it's not clubs bending each other over its the AFL and the AFLPA handing the power to the players. They can't really change that.

Also disagree you're going to be bent over here, no trade offers have even been discussed yet. The panic is literally all just media driven hypotheticals.

You do realise that the flow-on effect of "power to the players" is the players congregating at the biggest clubs. It's hardly as if the player power losses to clubs are evenly distributed.

This years and next year's first rounder should get it done. Maybe a third going back the Cats way.

Dogs should really dig their heels in here imo. Mackie is the biggest campaigner out there and he's tried bending teams over in the past, he's no longer list manager but in the name of equity they should be prepared to take a few rammings themselves.

Also got to lol at Cats fans saying they have a good reputation to deal with... Literally every fan I see on here dreads doing business with your swamp ass band of geriatrics.

I hope the Dogs make Geelong pay up for him. Smith has disrespected their club for far too long. Dogs deserve some compensation and Geelong act like saints at the trade table but really they are clever grubs. When the shoe is on the other foot they set unreasonable demands.
Leave St Kilda out of this!

That last paragraph is hilarious coming from a Carlton supporter. The Blues have the worst reputation in history by far...
