Trade Requested Bailey Smith

Unless you're Geelong!

Twice, only team ever to have it done to them and it’s happened twice.

It’s why I laugh when people say Cats aren’t fair traders. Historically Cats have gone above and beyond to get guys to the club. They don’t get salty and pull out of deals, they say they want a trade done they go and get it done.
It was that way under Wells, it’s still that way under Mackie.

Cats are the ONLY TEAM that’s had to trade for a Restricted Free Agent and they’ve done it not once but twice.

But Bailey isn’t even a Free Agent so once again it’s not applicable to this thread.
Bailey is just Out of Contract, a deal will get done and everyone can move along their merry way.

#15 before academy picks is definitely unders. Would end up closer to #20.

Adding pick #30ish in next years draft - again before academy picks - doesn’t seem enough to bridge the gap.

Potential Trade

B.Smith, #32 and F3 for #15 and F1.

Would value Smith at around pick 8-12.

Not a bad go, but I think Dogs would want to keep 32.

I doubt Geelong will give up a future first along with this year’s first.

What I can see happening is Cats going after-someone’s pick to try and move up this year or trying to grab Brisbane’s first this year and trading them bulk picks for points for Levi Ashcroft as Lions and Cats do heaps of deals.
Basically every single trade period they are doing some kind of move,
Cats helped Lions with points previously for Will Ashcroft and Lions helped Cats get Ollie Henry.

There’s a lot to play out but I think a lot of posturing here about “send him to the Draft” has been silly.

Deal will get done after some back and forth.

Indeed I do.

You might need to rethink your expectations on this one.

Very quickly.
When a player is out of contract and wants to leave your club then your club is going to lose on the trade. The negotitation is simply about determing how much of a loss it is.

Thats how this works.

I don’t have the calculator out but what would that put Lions at in terms of points? They have Marshall as a Lions academy guy as well so they need to match for him as well probably in the Early 2nd Round Range?

Need enough points for Levi at top 3 selection, enough for Marshall in the 20’s range.

Something like this would be a great move for all involved.

Dogs get their “2 first round picks”

Cats get Smith

Lions don’t waste their 1st round Pick on F/S bid and still can get Ashcroft (F/S) and Marshall (Lions Academy)

Win/Win/Win

Cats 2nd round pick -#35
Cats 4th round pick - #71
Dogs 4th round pick - # they dont have 1 but lets call it 67

=620 points
#17 = 1025 points

Sont think the lions would go for that
you would need to give them 1300 points plus to get a seat at the table

Dogs add 32 maybe? Not sure.

Still wouldnt get it done

Richmond would be giving them a 300 point uplift to take that pick

I think the Cats #15 + #35 gets it done

I do too but depends if Doggies think it’s enough or want to drag it out.

15 and 35 is 1634 points or equivalent to Pick 8 right?

Not bad for an OOC player who hasn’t played in over a year.

Points is the most useless thing to use. Dogs would be getting the 20th and 40th best player in the draft once all the bids and compensation picks come in. Not the 8th best player in which people be like "Oh thats pick 8 in value". Its not the same thing. Smith is worth more than drafting some unknown kid at a pick that is equivalent to an early second rounder.

Say that IS the trade that happens. You and other Cats fans will be like "thats more than fair, Dogs should accept it". Then when it goes through, 100 bucks you will be be laughing in your own threads, at how much you screwed the Dogs over and got a steal. Happens all the time.

Brisbane will want way more than that for 17 (and will get more).

But what if he entered the november draft with $1 mil on his head ?
No team would touch him before #15

I think the doggies will take #15 +#35

I think Tigers, Saints and Hawks would all have the cap room for him.

Just look at FA as a guide players get paid more when the cost is next to nothing.

Hawks wont have a 1st rounder
Tigers wont take him in the 1st round and Saints either

He will get to Geelong at pick #15 in the draft

His no RFA and if smith entered the preseason draft plenty of clubs would take him before the Cats got a chance to call his name.

He would go to the ND not psd obviously.
