You'd think they'd be happy wouldn't you? Alas, never have a seen a more sad looking collection of teenages this side of a MCR concert. Every time they show the goal umpire's signal, you see some droopy faced kid sitting there looking bored of his mind. I know it's petty, buy i wish they'd move them to the other side so they wouldn't be on camera.

Lol. Agree. Whenever there is an awesome goal kicked you can guarantee the kids are sitting behind the goal with a glum look on their face. Its like they're in detention or something.

See your ball boy, raise you photographer.

Get to sit on the wings, dont have to get up from their seat at all really. Plus they get some mementos to remember the day.

Saw a couple of them having a kick to kick with one of the balls at quarter time I think it was in the Saints Geelong game - the ball hit and rolled along the ground quite a few times, I know it's a bit pedantic in the greater scheme of things but that will affect the condition of the ball and is a bit unprofessional for mine

Serious question: have you ever kicked a Sherrin before? Because I bought a new one a few weeks back and it is in better nick now then it was when I first got it out of the package.

It's not like the ball boys need walkie talkies, a tazer and handcuffs. They are just kids and are only carrying the balls from the centre of the ground to the end. Nothing more or less.

For some reason I believed that the ball boy kids were either doing a sport development program or from AFL sports ready program as they fit the age group for it.

The ball boys should be encouraged to kick the footy's.

Sherrin's need to be kicked 20 or so times to get rid of the extreme point, and are in their prime between the 100th and 500th kick, the subsequent rate of decline dependent on how often they are hitting concrete etc. I should know, I did my grade 6 maths project on the subject.

I worked at Waverly years ago and thought it would be a ho hum job for a youngster, until we realised we were in the vicinity of the players rooms and one day meeting Gary Ablett Snr in the stairwell after another rampage.

Known some people who worked at the tennis and met lots of the players, especially when it was played at Kooyong and players mixed with the crowds to get to the courts.

Can undertstand about the lack of emotion though. If they did I could see the Fun Police moaning on about them carrying on.

Pretty sure most of them are young umpires, selected as part of potential pathway to AFL level ranks.

I know the ones in Sydney are picked this way as they spend a bit of time with the with umps in the rooms before the game.
