Michael Barlow has signed a two- year contract extension that will see him commit to the club until the end of season 2016.

Barlow was an integral part of the team in 2013, his performance in Fremantle's qualifying final win against Geelong, where he had 32 disposals and three goals, was a stand out.

The 26-year-old was recruited from Werribee in 2009 as a rookie and was elevated to the senior list after an impressive pre-season which saw him debut in round one the following year.

General manager of player management Brad Lloyd said Barlow had been outstanding since joining the club.

“He has represented the club well in big games and shown enormous resilience to get through a major setback a few years ago to return and play quality football in recent seasons,” Lloyd said.

“We are delighted to see him commit to the club until the end of the 2016 season.”

Really happy with this. Think he'll be a one club player. Bleeds purple and such a good bloke to have around the club and rate him highly as a player. Can't believe people we're talking about trading him. Such an integral part of our absolute gun midfield

Good to see we're locking players in during the offseason. Seem to be leaving the big fish until last - when we know what we have to work with in terms of cap
I would say that Barlow is a big fish.
At the end of his next contract he will be 28 have played 8 years and be prime target for FA. Those Melbourne teams will be after him bad.

[x] Like.

The actually wil be 7 years on our list, when the new contract expires. When he then gets another 2-3 years we avoided that FA worry at all.

But I agree that he probably is a Freo man anyway. We gave him a chance at the highest level and the club supported him through his rehap...

Never said he wasn't a big fish - Mundy and Fyfe are arguably bigger for different reasons (Fyfe for age/potential - Mundy for FA). Sure Melbourne teams will chase him - but he's mentioned the whole way that he appreciated Freo for taking the punt on him, and I can't imagine him leaving for anything.

Plus we gave him the opportunity to show of his media skills, he's genuinely funny and good at it. ;)

Had forgotten how well he played in that Geelong game.

It is the club.

We are a great club to be at.

I think you are right.

I was surprised when Sylvia signed with us. His reputation was as a player who lacked commitment, and you don't choose to play under Ross Lyon if you lack commitment. It is also unusual for a player who has been a key to trade that in and be more of a role player. Plus, leaving Melbourne to live in Perth would be difficult for some.

The only thing that I could conclude when he signed was what you said. We are a great club to be at.

Speaks volumes for Sylvia's current mindset too. I think he's matured to the point where he realises his cruising ways have resulted in his career being somewhat wasted so far. It's the same realisation Des Headland had towards the end, except by then Dessie's body was starting to fail him.

That's why I have a feeling Sylvia is going to be great for us. He's never lacked in talent, it's always been between the ears for him.
