Best of luck to Bassirou Faye and all that. I hope he succeeds. You need to question the recruiting approach though. Faye, Begg, Tohill, Keane, Wilson... it's a lotta eggs in one basket. On extreme long shots.

Not sure Begg needs to be included in that collective of players. He's no different than any other kid taken through the draft.

Isn't casting the net wide and recruiting people from all sorts of backgrounds onto our Cat B list the opposite of putting all our eggs in one basket? We basically only need one of these guys to make it as a regular player for it all to be worth it. And it's already got us a guy who, for all the criticism he attracts, has played 70 odd games and blown apart two finals matches for us.

Didn't Mike Pyke take the most contested marks one year?

He took 52 contested marks from 25 matches (2.08 per game) in 2013, second only to Cloke with 58 (2.63 per game). Im pretty sure the only 2 players to average over 2 a game. Other players I would consider to be strong contested mark takers average CM per game that year were;
Jonathan Brown 1.73
Lachie Henderson 1.95
Brian Lake 1.76
Drew Petrie 1.81
N Riewoldt 1.76
J Kennedy 1.61

Interestingly Jaryd Roughead only averaged 1.12 contested marks despite winning the Coleman that year....

The historical success rate of MSDed players is terrible. The narrative is that this one might have been better because of COVID and a lack of exposure to Victorian kids in particular, but that is yet to be borne out. Based on results to date, MSD picks should be considered highly speculative.

It's pretty shallow pool, and I think it's something clubs are coming to grips with in this latest iteration. The focus has shifted and I think we'll see a greater number of long term players emerge from this year than last with many of those taken likely to have been selected in this years ND & RD's.

He'll likely get some ruck opportunity at the Chargers this year now that big Ned has moved on to greener pastures.

The problem for me is not that we take some hail mary selections for our talls - after all thats what rookies and the MSD essentially are for; the problem is that we appear to take these selections at the expense of investing in talls with 1st and 2nd round picks.

Now looking at the KPP/tall flankers on the list (taller than 192 cm, excluding pure rucks like Lynchy and Grundy, and tall mids like Poulter and Reef) we have 13 on the list. 6 came from rookie selections. 2 were MSD, 2 were trade cheapies. Only 3 of 13 came from 1st and 2nd round picks..

So by all means cast the net wide and recruit people from diverse backgrounds, but dont do it at the expense of premium investments in the 1st and 2nd round of the draft

Roll the dice, why not? Absolutely nothing to lose. Big athletic kid, only 18. I love these cat b long shots myself. Very interested to see how the fairy tale unfolds this time around.
exactly its a free hit outside list of kids who played the game.
Never forget Cox has played a big part in winning us 2 finals and started at 21.
